Joe Mauer is one of the finest hitting catchers in the history of Major League Baseball and a certain future member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. As a former first overall selection in the Major League Draft, Mauer has been a sought-after commodity within the collecting world throughout his professional career. This list looks at some of the best cards produced during Mauer's career.
Mauer was a star basketball, football, and baseball in Saint Paul, Minnesota during high school and had the opportunity to play football collegiately at Florida State. However, after being selected by his hometown Minnesota Twins, Mauer opted for a career in professional baseball. Over his fifteen year career with the Twins, Mauer would win three batting titles, the 2009 American League MVP Award, three Gold Gloves, and five Silver Slugger Awards. For Twins fans, Joe Mauer is amongst the elite hitters of the franchise, reminiscent of former batting champions Kirby Puckett, Tony Oliva, and Rod Carew. In the near future, Mauer should be enshrined alongside other highly skilled backstops like Mike Piazza and Johnny Bench.
As a modern player who was selected at the top of the 2001 MLB Draft, card manufacturers were quick to add Joe Mauer to the checklists of their 2002 products. Due to the licensing agreement at the time, several of the 2002 with Mauer were live before the end of 2001. Further, Mauer's first year cards extend well beyond the usual slate of pre-rookie Bowman products and included dozens of cards in products where the checklists were driven by veteran Major League players. As a result, Joe Mauer has a large slate of rookie cards, which are often more sought-after than many of the cards produced later in his career. The list below includes several of those important rookie issues, as well as popular autographs and unique cards from later in his career.

10. 2002 Upper Deck Prospect Premieres Joe Mauer #67
In the early 2000s, Upper Deck launched their Prospect Premieres product to compete with Topps popular Bowman brand. Like Bowman, Upper Deck used players who were not on a Major League roster, but the photography in the set features the prospects in their MLB uniforms. The initial Prospect Premieres set was released in 2001 and attracted collectors with a deep line-up of prospect autographs. The sophomore release in 2002 featured a mix of prospect autographs and relics. Joe Mauer appeared in relic portion of the checklist. While many collectors might prefer chasing down Mauer's early autographs to his relic cards, his swatches in Prospect Premieres actually is actually a tougher find and has a smaller print-run than his autographs from this time period. Not always an easy find. Beyond the Joe Mauer relic, Prospect Premieres also featured autographed cards of Zach Greinke and Prince Fielder.
9. 2018 Topps Now Joe Mauer #817
Joe Mauer played his final Major League game at the end of the 2018 season. Like many other catchers before him, Mauer moved out from behind the plate for his last few seasons, spending time as the Twins' first baseman and designated hitter. However, Twins manager Paul Molitor allowed Joe Mauer to move behind the plate and catch the first pitch in the ninth inning of his last game before taking him out to a long standing ovation from the home crowd. It was a great moment for the long-time Twins catcher and the fans who enjoyed his career. The Mauer send-off was definitely worthy of a Topps Now card and has become one of the most popular Mauer issues from the second half of his career. This Topps Now card has a print run of 1,293 copies and it price on the secondary market is more in-line with purchasing an autograph of Joe Mauer rather than the few dollars you might expect to pay for a card with this type of print run.
8T. 2014 Topps All-Star Game FanFest Joe Mauer #WC- 06
The Minnesota Twins hosted the 2014 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, which included the traditional FanFest with baseball cards. Topps offered collectors at the All-Star Game FanFest cards through a wrapper redemption and purchase incentives at their booth. The set features a checklist that was strongly tilted towards the hometown Twins with two cards of Joe Mauer, along with Harmon Killebrew, Rod Carew, and Peanuts creator and Minneapolis native, Charles Schultz. The Mauer base card anchors the base set along with Derek Jeter, who was appearing in the final All-Star Game of his Hall of Fame career. The base Mauer FanFest is a challenging find, but still the easier of the two to track down on the secondary market. The base cards were available via wrapper redemption at the FanFest.
8T. 2014 Topps All-Star Game FanFest Commemorative Patch Joe Mauer #/150 #WC- 06
The Commemorative Patch card is the tougher pull with just a print of 150 copies. Collectors were given one patch card for spending more than $50 at the Topps booth at the FanFest. These cards rarely appear on the secondary market and can fetch a hefty price when they do. If you like the design of this card, but not the price, Topps has made several other Commemorative Patch cards featuring Joe Mauer over the past decade. The average Commemorative Patch card of Joe Mauer costs a few dollars on the secondary market.
7. 2014 Topps Joe Mauer #125 Snoopy Variation
Topps has made some interesting variation cards over the years. The collecting world has been graced with a Derek Jeter card with Mickey Mantle in the dugout and George W. Bush waving in the stands, the Rally Squirrel, and who could forget the hidden sparkle cards? In 2014, Topps produced this memorable card of Joe Mauer featuring popular Charles Schultz cartoon character Snoopy. The famous beagle turned World War I ace pilot and college student, "Joe Cool" is much easier to spot than the sparkle variations. The Mauer/Snoopy card is a super short-print that has long been desirable with Joe Mauer and Twins collectors. However, it is also one of the Twins catcher's more expensive cards. Hopefully, the Red Baron will not shoot down your efforts to find a copy of this card.
6. 2002 Bowman Heritage Joe Mauer #BHA-JM
Topps prominently featured Joe Mauer in their Bowman Heritage product's sophomore release. Mauer appeared in the base set, parallels, variations, and also the certified autograph checklist. The signatures included in 2002 Bowman Heritage focused on young prospects and Major League players. The card manufacturer hit an absolute home run with this product by including a first year autograph Joe Mauer, along with a second-year autograph of National League Rookie of the Year, Albert Pujols. Again, there are several options available for collectors looking to add a certified rookie autograph of Joe Mauer. This card's appeal largely comes from its design, borrowed from the 1954 Bowman set, as well the fact that it offers collectors an on-card autograph at a time when stickers were becoming more prevalent. The early 2000s Bowman Heritage sets did not have any parallels for the autographed cards.
5. 2002 Topps 206 Autographs Joe Mauer #TA-JM RC
In the wake of the Heritage releases in 2001, Topps created another vintage-themed product the following year with their Topps 206 set. Topps borrowed the style and design of the cards from American Tobacco's T-206 cards from the early 1900s. Released in three different series, the 206 cards featured loads of variations with card backs, jerseys, and background colors, as well as a few important rookie cards. The two most important first-year issues belong to Joe Mauer and Joey Votto, with the majority of Mauer cards being available for a few dollars. However, beyond the cards in the base set, Topps also included Mauer in the autograph checklist for the 206 set. The framed autograph is similar in design to the popular Allen & Ginter sets, which Topps started the brand in 2006. Mauer's Topps 206 autograph card does not have any parallels or variations.
4. 2002 Bowman's Best Autograph Joe Mauer #110
Topps revamped the Bowman's Best brand in 2002, turning this popular prospecting set into a per-pack autograph or relic product. There were 90 prospects featured on the checklist with the Joe Mauer autograph being the star card of the product. The common autographs in this set were seeded 1:3 packs, or roughly three per box, making this the easiest first-year Mauer signature to pull from a pack. There is an "Uncirculated First Year" parallel for this card, which came as a redemption that expired at the end of 2002. The Uncirculated cards were encased by Topps and only 20 copies were available for each first players. If you are looking for a first-year Mauer autograph, but do not want to pay the price for a Bowman Chrome autograph, this is a great card with an on-card signature at a fraction of the cost.
3T. 2002 Topps Pristine Common Joe Mauer #151 RC
Topps rolled out their Pristine product for the first time in 2002. The product was an expansion of the card manufacturers line of Chrome cards that featured a checklist that was heavy with game used relics and autographs. The Pristine checklist also included 20 rookie players who were each given three different cards in the set. The three cards had varying pack odds and print runs. Mauer's "Common" Pristine card is the easiest to find and has no serial number. Like all Chrome products created by Topps, this card features an Uncirculated refractor parallel that is serial number to #/1999 copies. The Uncirculated parallels in Topps Pristine all came packaged in sealed top loaders. There is a steep price difference between the base Pristine "Common" Mauer rookie card, which is one of his more affordable rookie cards, and the refractor version.
3T. 2002 Topps Pristine Uncommon Joe Mauer #152 RC #/1999
The "Uncommon" rookie cards in 2002 Topps Pristine were inserted at a 1:2 pack rate making them fairly easy to find. This Mauer rookie is serial numbered to #/1999 copies and offers collectors another affordable option with some great Chrome finishes and design. Again, the Uncirculated Uncommon Refractor offers collectors a more challenging option with a higher price tag and a print run that is limited to just #/799 copies.
3T. 2002 Topps Pristine Rare Joe Mauer #153 RC #/799
Joe Mauer's third Topps Pristine rookie card is the "Rare", which were limited to just #/799 copies. This card is naturally the most expensive and hardest to find of the three options that collectors can find within the 2002 Topps Pristine product for Joe Mauer. However, this card also offers collectors two challenging parallels to track down. The Uncirculated Rare card is serial numbered to #/149 copies, while the Gold Refractor is serial numbered to #/70 copies. Both parallels are amongst Mauer's more highly sought-after, high-end rookie cards.
2. 2002 Topps Chrome Joe Mauer #622 RC
Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Topps Chrome featured a checklist that was typically identical to the Topps flagship set with the chromium card stock. The inclusion of Mauer's rookie in the 2002 Topps Chrome Series 2 helped to build the reputation of this now popular annual release, especially in the wake of the card manufacturer leaving Ichiro out of the 2001 Chrome set. Mauer's base Chrome card is widely available on the secondary market at a variety of different price points depending upon the condition of the card. There are only two parallels for this card, both colored refractors. The Gold Refractor is the most common parallel, seeded at 1:4 packs, but they were not serial numbered. The Black Refractor was slightly tougher at one per hobby box, but there were only 50 serial numbered copies due to the fact that Topps placed the full run of 660 cards for this parallel in Series 2 packs.
Collectors can also just add a copy of the regular 2002 Topps Joe Mauer rookie card. Further, the card only has one parallel, Topps Gold, which is serial numbered to #/2002. Both the base Topps and Topps Gold Mauer rookies are only a few dollars and both widely available.
1. 2002 Bowman Chrome Joe Mauer Autograph #391 AU
Topps reformatted their Bowman Chrome product in 2001 to include a deep checklist of prospect autographs. The change had been a smashing success and a slate of 20 new prospect autographs appear in the 2002 Bowman Chrome product. Mauer shares the spotlight on this checklist alongside long-time Mets third baseman David Wright. Within the baseball card hobby this Bowman Chrome autograph have long been seen as a "must-have" for any serious Joe Mauer collection. The autographed rookie cards were inserted at a rate of one-per-box, so the base autograph is not too hard to find on the secondary market. For many, the real challenge with Joe Mauer's Bowman Chrome card rests on finding the serial numbered parallels. The Refractor (#/500) and X-Fractor (#/250) have sizable print-runs, but many copies of these cards have found there way into collections and off the secondary market. There is also a Gold Refractor (#/50), which is even tougher. Collectors should be prepared to pay handsomely for any of the parallel versions of Mauer's Bowman Chrome autograph.
