User Rating:

2013 Topps Update Series Baseball caps the year of "The Chase," the theme running throughout each of the company's flagship baseball sets this year. Sticking with many similar elements that started in Series 1 and Series 2, Update Series bookends the season.

The 330-card 2013 Topps Update Series Baseball base set includes the latest roster moves and several mid-season rookie call-ups. Additional cards are dedicated to 2013 All-Stars, Home Run Derby participants, Record Chasers and rookie debut cards highlighting the date players appeared in their first MLB game. Base set parallels include Emerald Foil (1:6 hobby packs), Gold (#/2013), Desert Camo (#/99), Black (#/62), Pink (#/50), Printing Plates and Platinum (1/1). Sapphire Foil parallels (#/25) cover not only Update Series but the first two sets as well, making the set a total of 990 cards. Silk Collection returns, again as a partial parallel. Each of the 100 mini cards are numbered to 50.

Variation short prints return with most focusing on showcasing top players at the Midsummer Classic with their All-Star teammates. A handful of retired players appear on variations as well, as do select rookies like Yasiel Puig and Hyun-jin Ryu.

2013 Topps Update Series Baseball has several basic insert sets. Jumping back a year from the mini cards in Series 1 and 2 are 1971 Topps Minis. The 50-card set is inspired by the black-bordered design. Ten 1971 Topps Minis Autographs are signed on-card and numbered to 10.

Chasing History adds another 50 cards. The insert set mixes current players and retired greats who went after records. Premium versions include Autographs, Gold Autographs (#/10), Cut Signature Autographs (20 cards, 1/1) and Autographed Relics (10 cards, #/25).

Making Their Mark (25 cards) is all about baseball's young standouts. Ten players haveautographed versions. These haveGoldparallels numbered to 10.

Over the decades, there have been many memorable playoff moments. Postseason Heroes is a 20-card set that recaps some of the biggest. Half of the players have autographed versions that are numbered to 10. There are also five autographed relics numbered to 5.

Franchise Forerunners (20 cards) are dual-sided cards. On one side is current rookie. The other has one of the best rookies from the same team's past. Ten dual autographs are numbered to 10. There are also five dual autographed relics, each limited to 5 numbered copies.

Most 2013 Topps Update Series Baseball player-worn relic cards come from 2013 All-Star Game Workout Jerseys. All-Star Stitches return with a checklist of more than 60 players. Parallels include Gold (#/50) and one-of-one Platinum. Fifteen players have autographed versions numbered to 25. Other relics from the mid-season game include All-Star Jumbo Patches (50 cards, #/6), All-Star Jumbo Patches Autographs (10 cards, #/6), All-Star Stitches Duals (20 cards, #/25) and All-Star Stitches Triples (10 cards, #/25).

The Ultimate Chase returns but don't hold your breath looking for one. There are only ten cards across the entire print run. Each is a one-of-one that has an autograph and premium memorabilia piece, cut signature or unique relic. Only top hobby stars are included.

Manufactured relics have become a Topps flagship staple over the past couple of years, giving a premium feel to inserts that don't have an autograph or piece of game-used memorabilia. League Leader Pins highlight 20 players from multiple generations who topped the charts in various statistical categories. Record-Holder Rings put the spotlight on the ten of baseball's all-time leaders. Pennant Chase Copper Coins (15 cards, #/99) feature past and present players who were on pennant-winning teams. There are also Wrought Iron (#/50) and Steel (#/10) parallels, much like the Proven Mettle coin cards found in Series 1. Manufactured relics are inserted one per hobby case and one per jumbo box.

2013 Topps Update Series Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Dan Gladstone

Good: Some players who were signed late in the season or traded are shown in their new team uniform. Chance for various autograph cards. Every All-Star has a card in the set. Various insert and parallel sets.

Bad: Too many players are in the set that don't belong for various reasons. Price point isn't necessarily in line with what you are expected to get.

The Bottom Line: 2013 Topps Update Series Baseball is an affordable set that is meant for set collectors, kids and a broad mix of collectors. It doesn't cost a ton but don't expect a huge return either if you're looking to flip.

Staff Rating:
3.9 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.0/5.0

2013 Topps Update Series Baseball has a rather simple design for the base set, the exact same as Series 1 and Series 2. There is nothing wrong with that. Simple is often sometimes better with baseball cards.

I'm also a big fan of the All-Star variations. The randomness of the action shots featured is what I like so much.

There are various insert sets involved, also. Most have rather simple designs, which again is fine. I'm happy that the designs aren't too redundant, and it's cool how Topps continues some of the insert sets throughout the year. You do have to pay attention to the card numbers, though, to know which product that specific insert came from, which might be tough to notice for the average collector.

My favorite part of this set is the All-Star Stitches jersey cards. I'm a fan of the images Topps uses for these cards, also. They always seem to get good action shots. For instance, they'll use the shot of the Home Run Derby winner holding up the trophy, as has been done in past years. I just think that's cool.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

2013 Topps Update Series Baseball has a 330-card base set. It features rookies like Yasiel Puig that didn't make it in time for Series 1 and 2 as well players like Jake Peavy who were traded during the season. My biggest issue with the base set is some of the players have no business being in this set. For example, Jose Valverde who was released in June is in here.

The insert checklists are solid, though. There is a good mix of players across them all so there isn't a redundant feeling on this front.

Value: 3.0/5.0

I don't believe there is a ton of monetary value in 2013 Topps Update Series Baseball. However, I do think there is value in having fun, and I had fun opening this product. Unless you pull a rare autograph or jersey card, you will likely just have a bunch of base and insert cards. I don't see anything wrong with that here, though. Topps Update is meant to be a fun product for those who don't want to spend a ton of money.

The Fun Factor: 4.5/5.0

I had a lot of fun opening 2013 Topps Update Series Baseball. It was a nice change of pace just to take the time to look through the base cards and reflect on the 2013 baseball season. It's always nice to pull a jersey or autograph card, and you will get one of those in this product as well. Collectors who build the set should get close to completing the base set just on one box.

I pulled a gary sheffield postseason heroes auto relic #/5, does anyone know the value of this card?

Mike
Mike

Does anyone know if Topps printed many Andrew McCutchen #35 Update gold cards? That is the only card I need to complete the set, but the only ones sold went for a lot of money. I couldn’t find an official statement on what happened to that card. Thanks!

Any idea of the checklist for Ultimate Chase cards in 2013 Update? I got one of the mystery variety and promptly redeemed it.

Josh
Josh

Thanks, I thought that it was a relic card or something. That is actually really cool! Hope you are right about that!

Josh

Ryan >> Do you know if they are going to be 1 of 1 type cards? Not sure what to expect because the redemption card was so vague. Thanks for the quick response!

Ryan Cracknell

Josh » I believe the item is not a card but a piece of memorabilia – possibly a jersey, pair of pants, hat, ball, etc.

Great product. love the inserts. I am just confused as to what cards are included in the redemption “2013 All-Star Memoribilia Redemption” A player wasn’t listed. What does that mean?

Ryan Cracknell

Josh » The players haven’t been announced yet. Those are good for full-sized pieces of memorabilia.

I HAVE POSTED THE PUIG ERROR CARD ON EBAY
ITS AT 35.00 right now. Thanks. Anyone interested on ebay listed under 2013 topps update error cards.

5- I HAVE A YASIEL PUIG 2013 TOPPS UPDATE ERROR CARD#US250 No name and icon. How much you think its worth?

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

navolin » It’s a printing error. Often people see them as being worth less however because it’s Puig, you might get a little interest. I wouldn’t expect big money though.

You seem to have forgotten the chrome and chrome refractor parallels that you could only get through retail. I have not bought any. But I know because they are there up for grabs on ebay and are described as being retail exclusive.

The Series 1 and 2 had purple (Toys R Us) and emerald blue parallels, but I haven’t seen these for the update set yet. Are these parallels in the update set? I’m trying to complete a White Sox team set for each parallel and would like to know for sure if these are out there. Thanks.

I’m a fan of the update series (must go back to those early traded sets in the 70’s, which we loved in my neighborhood), but this year has been great. Pulled a Votto/Kremer (the bat boy card–great story also), which sold so fast I realized I had underpriced it. Minutes ago I just pulled a 1971 mini auto of David Wright–#ed to 10! I have already scored better hits than I did with way too much spent on Bowman Sterling last year. Beyond the hits (which are cool), I still love the updating of players…bit heavy on the AS game cards, but still worth it to me. Thanks…and let me know if you have any suggestions on how to price the Wright mini auto. Thanks…

I’ve been loyal to Topps for a while, but one thing that really annoys the crap out of me lately is the lack of variety in card photos.. come on.. there are 162+ games in a season.. do you really have to use the same photo on 3 different cards of one player? I’m begging for variety.. Reed Johnson’s finally got a card in the Update Series and they use a picture from 2012.. come on. You had all season to get great pics.. with the camera equipment you have. I think they’re focusing a little too much on the manufactured relics too.. keep the game used and the autos of course.. but the pins and rings are merely toys and just lead to value-less clutter. Love the base set, as always, but I also agree with simply displaying the rookie debut on the rookie card. Not enough of an excuse for an extra card in my opinion.

J-C Des Champs
J-C Des Champs

Love the product to share with kids, wife and grandpa cause I’m a bit shy to show my high-end cards.

I think topps can destroy all the inserts and put 2 to 4 more GU card or one more auto in a box, and why not a booklet?

Stuish
Stuish

The subset cards are worth more $ than the reg. set cards in most cases, so why complain. You can by a single jumbo box and get most of a set. Add the extras and usually a box is worth it’s value or more. Getting value for it later is a different story.(Grade your valuable cards for max. return) Buy the sets at Walmart if you just want a simple set. Enjoy the fun of collecting and build your collection the fun way people

Kevin
Kevin

I just don’t understand how Topps justifies $50 per hobby box. I know the price will drop, but still not worth it at all.

emeekins
emeekins

why not just put the debut date on the RC? if none of them are short printed then whats the point of making a RC & RD in the same set? seems like a cop out to me. whats next? all star debut? rookie all star debut? also don’t care for the manufactured “relics” they like to stuff in hobby boxes only. send that garbage to toys r us.

Tim L.
Tim L.

No Xander Bogaerts?? He made his debut 8-20-13, with 18 games 44 at bats!! No Billy Hamilton?? Two major league debuts of two major league players not in a update release?? They worry more about inserts than what the set is about. What? Update sets are about who was in the All-Star game and not who made there major league debut in the regular season?? Never again will I purchase. I have boxes full of insert crap I can’t move. Give quality not quantity!!!!

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Tim L. » There is a cutoff date — July 31, I believe — which determines whether a player gets a rookie that year or the following season (to allow rookie content in early sets). From what I understand, this date is imposed by the MLBPA, not Topps or Panini. While they’re free to include them as prospects in insert sets, that’s why you don’t see them as rookies in these late-season releases.

Ben M.
Ben M.

Any chance of a Justin Morneau card with Pirates in this set?

Doug Gibson
Doug Gibson

I agree, I miss the days of the 792 card base set with little or no inserts. I like the game used stuff and an insert here and there, but it sucks to open a pack of 15 cards and almost half of it is an insert or parallel.

A.J. Nystrom
A.J. Nystrom

As a casual collector, I’m only interested in the base set. It’s a nuisance for me to turn around and have to list all the insert cards to try to make back a little bit of money on my investment. Wish they didn’t have all of the coin/ relic crap. If it’s game used jersey or bat, sure, it’ll sell but who cares about a commemorative coin card? Not many people.

JOHN RAMEY
JOHN RAMEY

To many subsets ,I throw them in a box ,could care less about them,I want more players like the old days.

Bobby Davis
Bobby Davis

Just looking at what is listed here, as usual, Topps loads its set with a lot of “special cards” that I consider mostly junk and skimps on cards of regular players and talented rookies and prospects. They should double the number of real players and get rid of most of the relics, jersey cards, repeats of All Stars, and all that crap. And how can a 2013 Update set not include Yasiel Puig?

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Bobby Davis » Puig will be in it. This is an early checklist Topps often sends out. By its very nature, Update Series gets lots of updates before its final release.
