Spring Fever Redemption Set Checklist

Million Dollar Chase Set Checklist

Product Details

User Rating:

Collectors understand the chase -- going after something that elusive thing or achievement. Whether it's the last common for a completed set or the rare autograph of a favorite player, the chase drives us. That's the theme that runs throughout 2013 Topps Series 1 Baseball, the company's flagship set to kick off the new season.

The 2013 Topps Series 1 Baseball sticks with a 330-card base set, which has been the standard for several years now. Besides regular player cards, subsets include League Leaders, Award Winners, Record Chasers and highlights from the 2012 World Series.

2013 Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards 19Base cards feature a clean white-bordered design. There's lots of space dedicated to photos. The tops of the cards have minimal details. The bottoms are highlighted by a swooping design that mimic a baseball infield, complete with home plate. Player names are written in foil. A team logo on the opposite corner rounds out the design elements.

Collectors have eight levels of parallels to chase, including some that are new to baseball: Emerald Foil (1:6 packs), Gold (#/2013), Desert Camo Foil (#/99), Black (#/62 - hobby only), Pink (#/50), Printing Plates, and Platinum (1/1). Silk Collection (#/50) returns as a 100-card partial parallel. Black, Printing Plates and Silk cards are all exclusive to hobby packs.

Retro-themed mini cards return. But rather than moving forward from the 1987 Minis in 2012 Topps Baseball, they're going back in time. 1972 Topps Minis begins with an initial list of 50 cards. Ten players have autographed versions (#/10) that are signed on-card. Additionally, there are 15relic versions numbered to 25.

Commemorative relics fall one per hobby case and one per HTA jumbo box. MVP Award Winners and Cy Young Award Winners both have mini trophies embedded in them. Twenty-five Proven Mettle Coin Cards showcase past and present stars. They come in three versions: Copper (#/99), Wrought Iron (#/50) and Steel (#/10).

The Greats is a hobby-exclusive insert. Focusing on 30 of baseball's best ever, the cards have a more high-end look and feel to them. The Greats Gold parallel is numbered to 99. The theme continues with 25 The Greats Relic Cards, each of which are numbered to 25. Fifteen players have Greats Autographs that are numbered to 10. The theme is rounded out with ten Greats Autographed Relics (#/5).

Calling Cards (15 cards) looks at some of the signatures moves and gestures players make. Limited autographed, relics and autographed relic versions also exist.

World Series Champions Autographs include players from the 2012 world champions. Each of the five cards are numbered to 50. World Series Champion Relics has a checklist of 15 players, each numbered to 100. Both of these are combined for five World Series Champion Autographed Relics (#/50).

Hobby-exclusive In the Name Relics have name plate letter patches from 2012 All-Star Game workout jerseys. Each card is numbered 1/1.

The "chase" theme comes through in the remaining 2013 Topps Series 1 inserts and hits. Chasing History (50 cards) mixes active and retired players who are either chasing or once chased monumental records. Chasing the Dream is a 25-card set filled with youngsters. Cut to the Chase stands out thanks, in large part, to its die-cut chrome design. Each of these have numbered autographed and memorabilia versions.

2013 Topps Series 1 Baseball has 30 ultra high-end cards called Ultimate Chase. All of the one-of-one cards have been designed individually and include an autograph and premium memorabilia piece. These might include a bat knob or over-size. For some of the all-time greats like Babe Ruth and Roberto Clemente, the have a cut signature and bat or jersey piece.

Variation short prints return, this time with the theme 'Out of Bounds.' The 25 cards capture players making spectacular and spectacularly awkward plays.

2013 Topps Series 1 Baseball also has a handful of retail exclusives. Packs sold at Target have Red parallels while Walmart packs have a Blue parallel. Retail blaster boxes also come with a manufactured Commemorative Patch or Rookie Patch.

The online code program returns with the Million Dollar Chase. While it'll be tough, one collector could get very rich with the program. Click here for full details.

Ten Ultimate Chase Tickets inserted in random hobby boxes. Those who pull one get a bat signed by five players. They will also be entered in a draw to follow a team of the winner's choice through the 2013 MLB playoffs.

Random packs will also have Spring Fever redemptions that can be taken to hobby shops between February 20 and 27 for a pack of exclusive cards.

A wrapper redemption promises an exclusive set of Silver Slate parallels as well as random autographs from Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken, Ken Griffey Jr. and more.

Click here for a detailed guide to all 2013 Topps Series 1 contests and promotions, including the wrapper redemption.

In an effort to promote the set, Topps produced the world's largest baseball card featuring the Prince Fielder card from the set.

2013 Topps Series 1 Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Christopher Larson

Good: Exceptional quality in all aspects of base cards and inserts, has the brand's trademark simple design, crisp photography, variation short prints, plenty of chase elements and promotions.

Bad: Only one hit per hobby box, sticker autographs on most of the hits.

The Bottom Line: 2013 Topps Series 1 Baseball is an excellent product. The base set is loaded with some of the game's brightest stars along with several rookie cards. The inserts and parallels make it fun for collectors to purchase packs and chase their favorite players. The standouts of this product are the autographs and game-used cards. Topps delivers with a quality product to ring in the excitement of the new baseball season.

Staff Rating:
4.0 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.5/5.0

The base design is a timeless classic. The photos are exciting and eye-catching with an array of colorful inserts and variants. The emerald foil parallels are an exciting addition this year as they shine like you might expect from a jewel. Mini cards return with a vintage 1972 design to them. The Calling Card insert is very dull looking and could have used a little more color and flash. The Greats insert has a much better look with its thick card stock. Chasing History is one of the nicest insert sets in this product. It has a nice mix of current and past stars with autographed and game-used versions. Cut to the Chase is a die-cut Refractor that stands out from the rest of the cards. Most of the autographs are variants of regular inserts, but use stickers for the signatures. The game-used cards are also variants of the regular inserts.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

The checklist boasts 330 base cards, focusing largely on veterans. There are also lots of players with their first official base set rookie cards. The Out of Bound short print variations feature 25 players attempting to make tough plays. Inserts feature a nice mixture of current, past, and future baseball players. The autograph and relic checklists have many top names.

Value: 3.5/5.0

2013 Topps Series 1 Baseball pays attention to quality. It has lots of creative elements that are exciting. That said, just one hit per hobby box is disappointing. It would be nice to see Topps give more to the collectors going forward.

The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0

As spring training approaches, baseball card collectors begin crawling out from their winter blankets and into their local card stores to purchase new baseball product in anticipation for the upcoming season. The packs are ripped and sorted through as collectors search for cards of their favorite players and work on their sets. 2013 Topps Series 1 Baseball gives collectors a lot of excitement for both the upcoming baseball season and a new year of baseball cards.

In May, bought a few packs of Hobby 1.
Pulled redemption for “The Greats Auto relic card-Pedro Martinez”. Went online and filed for delivery. Card came in registered mail on July 26. 2 month wait. Nice blue sharpie signature on white with Pedro in Red Sox home uniform. Relic was piece of solid Red Sox Red Fabric. Nice card.

After many years away, I came back to the cards as both my boys have shown an interest in baseball. I love the different inserts especially the Cut to the chase cards. With four Hobby boxes I’ve completed both base sets but am really looking at completing those two insert sets as well. The Elite cards are pretty sweet and I may try to complete that one as well.

I am new, we bought a complete 2013 series 1 and 2 set for our son. When we looked through the cards they are players in jerseys from last years teams? Do they always run a year behind? We got josh hamilton, michael young etc. all in Rangers jerseys?

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

KR Carm » In a lot of cases that’s the situation for early sets. I don’t have the checklist in front of me, but if Hamilton isn’t in Series 2 as an Angel, he will for Update Series which comes out in a couple of months.

I love this product. Truly surprised at the quality after a subpar precious three years! The chasing history subset is my favorite!

I’ve started collecting this series for my newborn son and my goal was only to collect the base cards but I’ve been rather lucky in some of my pulls, I scored a Johnny Podres Chasing History Autograph from a retail pack at K-Mart, a Cliff Lee Chasing History Jersey card at K-Mart as well, and the first pack I ever bought was at a flee-market and i scored a Chasing History Nolan Ryan bat card!!

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Matt » Congrats on the nice cards! Happy collecting with your son too!

Why is Micky mantle not in this set

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Josh » Topps never made a statement but it is likely their contract with his estate expired and the two sides couldn’t agree to a new one.

Murray Meech
Murray Meech

It’ impossible to collect this set with so many inserts and the odds of getting some of the special inserts is a joke. As one of the comments posted “get back to the basics”make it affordable for the liltlle guy.

Matt MacDonald

Felt like the S1 checklist was a carryover from 2012 Update, which isn’t a bad thing, but I’m ready for Series 2, S1 wasn’t much help for my PC, lol.

Bob More
Bob More

I don’t see any Mantle card listed… do you have explanation ?

I think 2012 had better design.

thanks

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Bob More » There aren’t any Mantle cards in the set (hence why #7 has been “retired” once again). Although Topps hasn’t confirmed, it’s likely their deal with Mantle’s estate expired.

Don’t understand not having Matt Cain in Series 1. Only a few low production sets have Cain. Will certainly be valuable I guess. WCR line has Nady but not Romo? Really?

So, so, so many inserts. Unless you buy boxes upon boxes upon boxes, there’s no way to come close to completing any of them. Why doesn’t someone with a brain work at Topps?

Topps Series one has a leg up on the competition being the first product out of the gate. Which makes it a must buy in some shape or form for even the most casual of collectors.

Inevitably I bought a couple jumbo packs after work today and was pleased. obviously these are jumbo packs more than likely your not going to pull a 1/1 or even a numbered card.

I was indeed happy with the base card look, sure silver isn’t great for scans but adds a nice little touch in hand.

The red/blue parallels do nothing for me and seem pointless.I prefer the Emerald Inserts.

I did snag a Hamilton Die Cut to the Chase Refractor and was impressed! The mini’s are a really nice throwback to the 72’s pulled two, seems like Topps 2013 is inserts galore (they could do away with chasing the dream and the red/blue parallels in my opinion), some being really nice for the price and others being blah. I purchased to Jumbos and pulled 9 parallels and 11 insert cards. Including 6 chasing history inserts. Very pleased with the array and eye appeal of Series one, for the price.

Nice base design, picked up two packs for fun pulled a gold and a chasing history. I think they could pull back on the reigns as far as inserts just a touch. How about just making “Chasing History/the Dream” strictly autos and do away with the base and other parallel versions? Prolly going to wait for series 2 now.

Seeing three different versions of the Chasing History insert. Regular, non-refractor version seems to be the “base” version and available in all formats of packs. Gold refractor version seems to be only in 72 card hanger boxes – 4 per box. White refractor version in jumbo (rack) packs – 2 per pack. Takes the concept of “The Chase” a little far for a 50 card insert set, if you ask me

Everything I was looking for in a lower end card and the first of the season. The style is modern adn clean. The inserts are interesting.

Hello all from down under ( Aussie) I purchased the 2011 series 1 and 2. It has been interesting at best but I am working on making it a set. Since the new series is out , ill have a look at buying a hobby box to see if any good , and in waiting on a redemption card from topps too for 2011 series 1 ( Andre Dawson ) seeya

I always love busting boxes of Series One every year because it’s always the first baseball release of the year! My daughters and I opened 8 Jumbo Hobby boxes last year and even though we didn’t pull anything great, we still had fun opening them! I know we can’t pull a BIG hit in every box and more often than not we dont break even on our boxes but we have fun opening packs together and isn’t that what this great hobbys all about? I can’t wait to bust some boxes with my girls and share the hobby with them! Let the CHASE begin!!

with the product a few days away..i dont have any reservations of buying more than one hobby box and a retail pack only if someone didnt already take all the hot packs out…for me and 80% of collectors this amazing checklist ends at commemorative pins…ill never see those awsome patches HOF autos..so why even waste my money….ill continue to use 2011 and 2012 cards as packing instead of plugs or cardboard….the collecting hobby has no place for the little people anymore…..im not wasting money on chasing a ghost this year…very dissapointed and i dont think topp cares cause they are making thier money no matter what….my first year collecting was 1975 and i had a stack of robin yount rc and george brett…i never pulled a bryce harper from any pack and 2 mike trouts….greed has taken the heart from the hobby…kind of sorry for ranting but someone has to say it…..Vin G

Somebody explain Brian Wilson in World Series set but not Sergio Romo??? Will there be a complete World Series champion set like Cardinals last year???

The difference between 2013 Topps and the flagship Topps sets of the recent past, seems to be that 2013 looks COLLECTIBLE. Topps, IMO, really lost their way chasing the Diamond and Gold themes in 2011 and 2012. The cards looked generic and had a generic name loosely based around the year’s theme. Granted, they are doing the same thing this year with the “chase” theme, but the cards don’t look like generic Press Pass inserts that are non-descript.
I’m all-in on Series 1 and if the traditional formula holds true, Topps Update (in Oct 2013) should be a run-away smash hit, using this design and parallel scheme.

The new design is okay. The look of the 72 minis is far superior to the base cards.
There are FAR TOO MANY inserts. Topps needs to get back to the basics, one set, no inserts.

Seems like forever unitl this set releases. I found out some more interesting information about this issue.

I won’t actively invest nor chase down completing this series. In fact, after I buy a box or two, most of the cards will probably be traded or donated away. But that shared, so many of the releases I am looking forward to follow over one month later! I can’t wait that long to open some 2013 cards! With that, Topps Series 1 will be my first purchase of the season, but with very little “wow” to the product, I’ll chase down other series as they come out.

INSERTS are impossible to pull, i mean the rare inserts…mostly retailers that open 10 cases when they come in scoop them up…but the average collector has to spend thousands of dollars to get a card worth a few hundred….1 auto and 2 relics isnt worth 100+per box when your left with millions of worthless basecards..And last year it was impossible to get any cards with codes…who want virtual anything???

Yes, there will be codes. No details yet but Topps was explaining on Twitter that a return to the card-per-code format is highly unlikely.

Don’t really like the design that much, but the inserts should be fun, and no more code cards, yes.

Design looks good, but very similar to Bowman. Silver foil makes the name hard to read on the front when the actual cards are scanned. Could do without the parallel sets.
