Who's ready for some 2013 Topps Update Series Baseball variation short prints?

Over the last decade, Topps has evolved the old boxed Topps Traded set into the current, and more expansive, Topps Update Series. Whereas the original Topps Traded sets focused almost exclusively on rookies and veterans on new teams, Update Series expands beyond that. A big part of that is an extended look at the All-Star Game and its surrounding festivities. That's definitely the case with the 2013 Topps Update Series variations, most of which pay tribute to the Midsummer Classic.

The vast majority of variations picture a big-name player alongside one or more of their All-Star teammates. It's definitely a case of "Where's Cano?" on a lot of them as the Yankees second baseman makes multiple appearances throughout the set.

2013 Topps Update Series also marks the return of retired player variations, albeit in a limited number. Ken Griffey Jr, Cal Ripken Jr, Bo Jackson, Chipper Jones and Nomar Garciaparra all appear on short prints, but not in the base set. Ripken and Jackson actually have two variations.

Although he wasn't an All-Star, Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig has two three variations. The first has him raising his arms in triumph, presumably after a home run (although, it being the charismatic Puig, it could have been a single). The second Yasiel Puig variation has him joining the "Big Glove card" ranks made famous by the 1986 Fleer Mickey Hatcher. Collector's can also find him sliding on a third variant version.

Puig, Ripken and Jackson aren't the only players who have two variations. Yoenis Cespedes and Hyun-jin Ryu also take double-duty on the checklist.

Ryu's cards are actually spins on his Series 2 661 card. Derek Jeter has a variation based on his Series 1 base card.

Shortly after his birth, Topps teased a short print of Prince George of Cambridge soon after his birth. It has surfaced, acting as a variation for Prince Fielder.

After opening more than 40 cases, case breaker brentandbecca reports that the most common variations fall about eight per 2013 Topps Update hobby case and six per jumbo case. Rarer SSPs are landing 1:2 cases. We've highlighted what are believed to be the SSPs on the checklist that can be found on the tab above.

It includes (wherever available) a picture of the variation, a base card image to compare it to and a short note so you know exactly what to look for. Topps did not provide a checklist and did not confirm the final number of cards. We'll continue to add to this list if more emerge. If you pulled a variation not on our list, please let us know in the comments below.

Ryan is a former member of The Cardboard Connection Writing Staff.   His collecting origins began with winter bike rides to the corner store, tossing a couple of quarters onto the counter and peddling home with a couple packs of O-Pee-Chee hockey in his pocket. Today, he continues to build sets, go after inserts with cool technologies, chase Montreal Expos and finish off his John Jaha master collection.

I have pulled a Mariano Rivera looks to be a variation 2. Seen 1 on ebay and I guess it sold but I can not find a price or anybody else that has this card. Trying to find detailed price on it. I am not sure where to find any info. The card is of him standing right outside of the dugout holding his glove.

Thanks for being the “go to” source for all this info Ryan. First site I visit when I open a new product.

Is there a list somewhere that differentiates between SP and SSP with this product? I’m in the middle of opening a Jumbo case and have pulled quite a few.

I was wondering maybe you can help me out. I’ve pulled 3 cards from topps update, us165 has no name, us147 has half of the last name missing, and the last one us81 has just a tad bit of his last name. Are they worth anything. Thank you for your time

Roger Ugaitafa » They’re printing errors. Any value would be as novelty. In the past I’ve sent them back for replacements.

I pulled a Bryce Harper #us100 gold with no name on front. Are there many of this type, and is there a premium on this card ?

mike » Most concerned these to be printing errors. That said, because it’s Harper, you might be able to find someone who might pay a premium for it.

just pulled a “Boston Strong” variation of Jon Lester #541, has Boston Strong written in red toward the bottom of the picture, Topps logo and Lester’s name also are in red and it is numbered to 50 on back

I’d pulled the Ortiz variation from a loose wax pack from Target, and I didn’t realize what I had until I checks this post.

I’m not sure about Hobby boxes, but in Jumbo boxes you are guaranteed one short print or super short print. The jumbo box I bought I received the Chipper Jones short print.

I also bought a $19.99 blaster box from Wal-Mart and actually pulled the super short print of Cal Ripken Jr. holding a trophy.

Jumbo seems to be the best bet. This was the first time I ever got any type of short print from a blaster box so I’m not sure of the odds of pulling one with those.

What an awesome hit!! I hit lots of good cards. Saberhagen CH auto, Kershaw AS Stich and Ruth wraught iron 26/50 Cespedes SP at HR Derby, Posey,Harper Golds, 1 plat. RC common, 1 sapphire AJ Ellis but has Kershaw in pic 2/25, 4 diff. Puigs, 7 total. I love the ’71 minis. Would like to ’70 in minis (89’s next year). I have 2 boxes coming in Monday…wahoo!!Is there a wrapper redemption for the updates out of curiousity?

I’ve seen one with Puig sliding into home, a closer shot of Rivera coming out of the bullpen door(horizontal), and Prince George of Cambridge US-205(asking price on eBay is $999). The Puig sliding into is no longer on eBay but the other two are. I wonder if there are some ssp’s in this series.
