The lockout from the 2011-12 NBA season left collectors with a disappointing product offering. However, 2012-13 Panini Basketball products featured rookie cards from both the 2011 and 2012 NBA Draft classes. This unique situation pushed Panini to roll out a large 2012-13 basketball card lineup.
Panini announced that in addition to exclusive deals with Kyrie Irving, Kenneth Faried and Derrick Williams from the 2011 draft, they had also reached rookie card exclusives with multiple 2012 draft picks: Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Thomas Robinson, Harrison Barnes, Andre Drummond, Austin Rivers, John Henson, and Jared Sullinger. However, the biggest news of the year was from Leaf. They announced an exclusive autographed card deal with 2012-13 Rookie of the Year, Damian Lillard. While Panini could still use Damian Lillard images on base cards and inserts due to their NBA exclusive, only Leaf could offer collectors a shot at autographed cards.
Understandably, with double the amount of rookie cards, plenty of players were popular with collectors. From the 2011 draft, this includes Kyrie Irving, Kemba Walker, Klay Thompson, Kawhi Leonard, and Isaiah Thomas. From the 2012 draft, top options include Anthony Davis, Bradley Beal and Damian Lillard.
