Clean, player-focused designs highlight 2012-13 Panini Prestige Basketball. The second basketball card set of the year from Panini, 2012-13 Panini Prestige Basketball is another release that has tons of rookies —100 to be exact.
Covering both the shortened 2011-12 season and the 2012-13 class, rookie cards fall one per pack.
2012-13 Panini Prestige Basketball Set Details
2012-13 Panini Prestige Basketball base cards have a modern design that is dominated by a player photo. The background starts out white before shifting into a black and white photo with a splash of color at the top. A thin ribbon at the bottom houses the player's name and frames in the main photo. Rookie cards have two player photos on the front. A full-color shot sits in the foreground while a black and white portrait decorates the background.
Autographs fall three per box in 2012-13 Panini Prestige Basketball. They're led by Old School Autographs and Distinctive Ink and their on-card signatures. Prestigious Pros uses sticker autographs.
As part of Panini's plans to cut back on memorabilia cards, 2012-13 Panini Prestige Basketball comes with just one game-used card per box. These include Inside the Numbers and True Colors.

2012-13 Panini Prestige Basketball Product Review

Good: 100 total rookies from both the 2011 and 2012 NBA Draft Classes, one rookie card per pack five-card pack of Kobe Bryant Anthology cards inserted as box topper, Old School Autographs and Distinctive Ink have on-card signatures, three autographs and one game-used card per box instead of the two autographs and two game-used cards per box configuration used in the past.
Bad: Base cards don't look as nice as the past two Prestige releases, rookie autographs use stickers, players who changed teams during the off-season are not shown in their new uniforms.
The Bottom Line: 2012-13 Panini Prestige Basketball is an affordable mid-end product. This is a great set for basketball collectors who have been waiting for Kyrie Irving rookies. The ability to pull rookie cards from two different draft classes is a huge bonus.
Card Design: 4.0/5.0
The base cards have a smooth, glossy surface with the player's team colors represented on the card. Compared to the last two Prestige basketball products, I do not like the look of this year's base cards at all. The photos seem very generic and too crowded with multiple colors flooding the background. Another complaint with the base cards is that players who changed teams in the off-season are not shown in their new threads. They are only represented with their new team logo and the date that they changed teams. I was expecting to see cards of Steve Nash, Dwight Howard and Ray Allen in their new uniforms.
The base cards have two parallel versions: Bonus Shots Gold and Black. Besides serial numbers, the only difference is the gold and black on the bottom of the card.
The rookie cards are a huge selling point of this product. They look amazing with their white background and silhouette of the player shadowing the color photo.
Inserts are plentiful in 2012-13 Panini Prestige Basketball. Connections showcases two current and past players who played together or were rivals. Hardcourt Heroes is my favorite-looking insert set. It mirrors the look and design of the rookie cards but with an NBA hardcourt design as a background. If the base cards used the same design and background, it would have looked much better. Franchise Favorites is dull with its darkened blackened that shows more emphasis on the player. Stars of the NBA is very similar to the base cards but with the insert name instead.
Even though it's not a Prestige-exclusive, this is the second 2012-13 Panini basketball product to include a five-card pack of the Kobe Bryant Anthology cards, a 200-card set highlighting Kobe Bryant's NBA career. Considering Kobe Bryant is my favorite NBA player, you can see why I absolutely love this insert set. Putting together this set will be a challenge, but rewarding for Lakers fans.
The True Colors Relics look too similar to the base card design photography. Looking much better are the Inside the NBA Relics that showcase colorful photos. Old School Autographs are on-card, which is always welcome. However, about half of the card is just a plain white background. There is too much empty space on the card and lacks the look and touch of an actual autograph. Prestigious Picks Rookie Autographs use sharp rookie photography with a foil background. Unfortunately, they use sticker autographs.

The 2012-13 Panini Prestige Basketball base set is comprised of 150 base cards and 100 rookies. First-year cards come from both the 2011 and 2012 draft classes. Each team is represented by four to six players. This product is ideal for rookie collectors, especially because of what happened due to the NBA lockout last summer. There are many different insert sets but only a few autograph and game-used sets.

Each box is affordable. Considering past Panini basketball products gave collectors two autographs and two game-used cards per box, 2012-13 Panini Prestige is even better with three autographs and one memorabilia card per box. Honestly, I would rather pull an autograph from a box than a game-used card. I think most collectors feel the same.
You can't get any better than the autograph checklist in this product. Not only can you pull autographs from two different draft classes, mainly Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis, but superstars like Kobe Bryant, Blake Griffin, Kevin Durant, and Derrick Rose as well.
The Fun Factor: 5.0/5.0
Because the NBA lockout last summer prevented Panini from releasing rookie cards to early sets last year, basketball collectors have been anxiously awaiting for the new 2012-13 products to be released. It looks like they made a smart decision in leaving rookies out of their handful of 2011-12 products and loading up this year's sets. With so many great rookie cards leading the charge, 2012-13 Panini Prestige provides great value and fun for collectors.

Great product – but for some reason the Old School Signatures #20 Clyde Drexler is missing from all checklists (the card does exist though, as I have it myself), and #22 Sam Perkins + #23 Cedric Ceballos were only released as redemption cards, that cannot be redeemed! :(
