User Rating:

Since Topps stopped making basketball cards, there hasn't been a full-on chromium set for hoops fans. 2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball fills the void with a clean design, simple structure, autographs galore and a massive rookie checklist.

Given the strength of the double rookie class and the lasting popularity of the Prizm brand, this is easily one of the top all-time sets since Panini started making basketball cards.

2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball Set Details

The 2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball base card design features a chromium border around a player photo. The action is allowed to pop out of frame ever so slightly, giving the cards a more modern feel. Still, the lines are clean and let the technology do the work. Etching gives the cards an almost-3D effect.

2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball Cards 1

The 300-card base checklist includes nearly 100 rookies. Like all 2012-13 Panini basketball products, the rookie crop combines both the 2011 and 2012 draft classes. 2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball also has two different exclusive parallels that combine to fall two per Hobby box: Prizm and Gold Prizm. The Green Prizm parallels are exclusive to Retail.

Autographs lead the insert chase. They average two per box from a checklist of 100 cards. There are also Prizm parallels.

2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball Cards 2

The gold medal-winning 2012 USA Basketball team is honored with one of a handful of basic insert sets in 2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball. Most Valuable Players is a 25-card set dedicated to many of the game's best. Finalists focuses on postseason superstars.

Product Review

2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball Product Review

Reviewed by Kenneth Ashley

Good: Base set should make set collectors happy. Prizms look stunning. No memorabilia cards is a nice change of pace. Simple box breakdown that's focused more on inserts and parallels is reminiscent of older basketball boxes.

Bad: Some players who changed teams this past offseason are still not shown in their new uniforms. The autograph checklist is average, with a few d-leaguers and 12th men sprinkled in. Inserts and Prizms are very few per box.

The Bottom Line: 2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball is an affordable mid-end product. Collectors who have missed chromium-style basketball have reason to rejoice. Fans of nice parallels and inserts have a new product to play with, and the Gold Prizms have the potential to soar.

Staff Rating:
0 / 5.0

Card Design: 5.0/5.0

The base cards for Prizm look great. They have a very simple chrome design with a completely silver border. Players on the cards are printed beyond the silver borders, giving them the appearance that they're popping out the card. The cards also have no curves, which has plagued Topps' chrome products for years.

The product really shines (no pun intended) with its three parallel versions. The entire card is given a rainbow finish comparable to Topps Refractors. The rainbow effect is more stunning on these Prizm parallels, however. One needs to see them in person to really appreciate them.

Autographs are simple fare, resembling the base set with an autograph sticker.

The product has four additional insert sets. The Finalists insert set includes players that have won the NBA Championship. The cards look very clean and player-focused, with a nice shot of the championship trophy in the background. Downtown Bound features the NBA's hottest three-point shooters. This design is also very simple, featuring a picture of the player mid-jump shot with swooshes that are similar to Topps Trademark Moves. Most Valuable Players showcases former NBA MVPs. The design is very interesting, with a checkered background, and the player's name featured vertically on the card. One thing I like is that the players are pictured in the team they won the MVP with (Garnett with the T-Wolves, Nash with the Suns, Iverson with the 76ers, etc). Finally, USA Basketball presents the 12 members of the squad that won gold at the 2012 Summer Olympics. The set features the players in their USA uniforms, while the background includes a snapshot of the American flag. The player shots used for the set look amazing, ranging from the Kobe Bryant fist pump to the LeBron James dunk.

Checklist: 3.5/5.0

The product has a good mix of veterans, retired players, and rookie cards. The autograph checklist is 100 players strong. There are plenty of rookies and retired players on the checklist, but only four veterans. While there are a few nice, uncommon names in the list, some choices are questionable. Players like Marco Belinelli, Lance Thomas, Tyler Honeycutt, and Shelvin Mack could surely be replaced by better choices, especially for a product at this price point.

Value: 4.0/5.0

Boxes are pretty affordable, running around $100. You get two autographs, three inserts, and three parallels per box, on average. Rookies come out to two per pack, which is decent considering that there will be a lot of base-only packs per box. The inserts and Prizms are doing well on the secondary market, making this product a decent buy.

The Fun Factor: 4.5/5.0

Panini took the concept of chromium technology and put its own spin on it. The result is an excellent product that is lots of fun to open. With no memorabilia sets and only one autographed set, the focus is placed on the inserts and the Prizm parallels. The Gold Prizms are reminiscent of other big-time basketball inserts (PMG, anyone?). The autograph checklist could be better, but at the same time, this product isn't focused on autographs. This product is geared towards the set collectors and insert chasers. Panini succeeds on both of these fronts.

Wow, reading some of these comments now that the box is selling at $10,000 per, very interesting!

I myself just got back into the hooby to find we purchase this box back in 2012, opened it and stashed the cards away. All are in 10/10 condition. Ended up hitting AD refractor, Beal Refractor..about 14 refractors from 1 box and 12 autos. I dont understand how but thats that. The refractors are with PSA, soon coming to an auction near you! :)

I bought 2 hobby boxes didnt receive even ONE numbered card nor did i receive even ONE green prizm or gold prizm and i bought 2 HOBBY boxes NOT retail. If someone can explain to me why this would happen or if this is normal please text or call me at 3083905565 or just email me im so confused calebmankin23@yahoo.com i am so DISAPPOINTED.

Green Prizms are not in hobby boxes, just retail. The only numbered Prizms in this set are the Gold, which are extremely tough (10 copies each) and not guaranteed on a per-box basis. Panini only said a couple of parallels per hobby box. They did not specify the type.

I have pulled so many great cards out of this collection including green mvp refractors of both kobe and lebron. I also have downtown bound green d wade and kevin durant. I bought 2 boxes and pulled 14 green refractors, none of which were weak players. I pulled blake griffin, lebron, carmelo, 2 d wades most of the usa set and kobe and lebron chrome refractors on top of multiple more star players. Kyrie Irving avoided me however, but I did pull 8 Anthony Davis rc’s in just 2 boxes and I picked up just 1 other pack while at the store and pulled an anthony davis prestigious picks auto rookie card you can find plenty of them on EBAY if you are interested, they are actually going for pretty cheap at the moment considering the upside of the player. Overall, I have had more fun collecting this set than any set since 2003 when wade, melo, and lebron all came out so I highly recommend this and if you have extra cash get a box of GOLD STANDARD because I have paid for the 120-200 dollar box with just 1 or two cards multiple times. It is a risk but there are much better odds of pulling higher caliber cards both value wise and especially autos of stars and hall of famers so don’t forget THE GOLD STANDARD people you may forget all about prizm after that.

I am the GREATEST, and that’s all that needs to be said.

I agree with the latter half of these comments but am bias. I stopped in a hobby shop out of nostalgia for the first time in over a decade with the intent of purchasing late 90’s nba packs, passing up panini, as i never cared for their product. However, put simply, i like shiny things and bought a pack of Prizm. To my delight, i was pleasantly surprised! So i bought a box, not aiming to pull a certain card, but hoping for at least 1 of each top rookie. (i pulled a Kyrie & Damian, no Davis)

sigs pulled – Sydney Moncrief
Reggie Jackson

Prizms. – Kevin Durant
Thaddeus Young
Martell Webster

Finalist -Larry Bird

MVP -Willis Reed

the reason Im bias……

Just pulled it yesterday and had to share, and trying not to gloat. Thank you Panini, FINALLY!

My favorite set/product of 2012. Great checklist, and I love the fact that golds and prizms are the only parallels (outside of the green retail). Unlike Topps Chrome football where the amount of parallels is just silly (pink, camo, orange, red, black, gold, blue, sepia). Great insert sets as well. Beautiful cards.

Great product the base set is nice a balance of stars with common players just a nice looking set the price is right but soon will rise with demand. Only thing I wish was better is the auto checklist wish more stars but overall the product is great love the look of the cards.

Beautiful cards. A lot of rookies and veterans. The inserts sets are fantastic also.

Great value in these boxes. Ive opened 3 cases and are wanting more. I love the 300 card set, Ive sold most of my sets for 90 dollars and that is awesome and helps me chase for more of what I want. If you got the money to spend buy a case you wont be left dissapointed, tons of resale value, havent had this much fun collecting since 2008-09 Bowman Chrome. Love it.

Scratches on the prizms, green is retail only, rc’s not numbered.

Jeremy Lin base Gold 7/10 (his jsy#) hit $406 on eBay. That’s crazy!

Too many base cards; especially 90% useless RCs that will be forgotten in 2-3 years….

The Refractors are crazy though. Although calling the Prizms is like calling Topps Refractors by the name of “Chromes” geez

Best Basketball Product Panini has done. Plenty of value for $100 – lots of rookies, autos and the refracter prizm technology is gorgeous. The Gold versions are INSANELY BEAUTIFUL… Great job by Panini, and I’m usually bad mouthing them, but can’t on this one. They got it right. These boxes won’t stay at $100 for long..

i give this product 3.5 stars. this is a good product that gives you stars from yesterday and today. lets love this product for what its worth. everyone expects to hit the jackpot with this. it tough dont get me wrong, but for the true collector since the 70s its great.

As Jeff said above, you pay $100 a box and get Stiemsma and Festus autos. oak maybe not them both but with this many players the odds are against you pulling off something big

Not a huge fan of Chrome so these base really don’t excite me. I do like the USA team cards. And it seems slightly overpriced by a few bucks. Id prefer Threads or Prestige over this one.

WAAYY to many cards. 300 cards for the base set???. Autograph checklist is ok. Don’t really know if I’ll be hunting down Greg Stiemsma or Festus Ezeli autographs any time soon. I think my collecting dollars would be better served with Hoops than this set.
