There's basketball card collecting and then there's Michael Jordan. There's high-end collecting and then there's Exquisite Basketball. Combine the two and you have one of the most popular collectibles in the hobby. Michael Jordan is Exquisite Collection and regardless of the other huge names found within the product, Jordan is the one that continuously draws the most attention and highest values. The guide below takes a detailed look at some of the top Michael Jordan Exquisite Collection Basketball cards.
While the debut year for Exquisite Collection in 2003-04 is best remembered as the rookie season for LeBron James, who also has some impressive Exquisite cards, Michael Jordan was part of the brand from the very beginning and prices for his cards have only risen since that point.
Exquisite Collection has seen some considerable changes over the years, including the 2010-11 lockout, which led to an empty year for Exquisite collectors, and a shift to a college focus for the product as Panini assumed control of the NBA card license. A few years later, Panini snagged the NCAA license, as well, leaving the high-end basketball brand to ultimately be used as an insert in other sets such as Goodwin Champions.
Formerly the main high-end basketball release for Upper Deck and the entire hobby, there are quite a few cards for Michael Jordan that are found in Exquisite Collection products. The intention of this guide is to highlight some of the more popular cards that also had some continuity in the line. While no specific insert can be found in each release, base cards are one option that ties the entire product line together. It also represents one of the more affordable overall ways for collectors to obtain a Michael Jordan Exquisite Collection Basketball card. Because the base cards are some of the more plentiful cards in each release, they tend to be the easiest to track down.
From there, several different autographed relic insert lines have proven to be very popular and have been brought back in subsequent releases. Limited Logos displays a huge game-worn jersey patch along with an on-card signature and has been one of the most consistent autographed inserts for Michael Jordan in Exquisite Collection.
Noble Nameplates sticks with a horizontal design and a game-used swatch from Jordan's nameplate. Number Pieces was available in every release until the college switch and features a game-used jersey swatch displayed in a "23" die-cut design. Lastly, Patches or Auto Patches had a shorter run, but are among the most common Michael Jordan Exquisite autographed relics, with most numbered to 100.
Michael Jordan can also be found in 2014 Exquisite Collection Golf, but this guide only highlights his cards from Exquisite Collection Basketball releases. Jordan does have quite a few golf cards to check out.
