User Rating:

Following the 2016 return of the brand, 2017 Bowman Platinum Baseball is again initially exclusive to Walmart locations with several options. The most premium of the bunch is similar to a hobby format, with two autographs in each Collector Box.

These Collector Boxes retail for $70, and are joined by Value Boxes for $20, and Fat Packs that run $6.

2017 Bowman Platinum Baseball Base / Inserts

Headlined by the first pack-pulled Cody Bellinger rookie cards, the 2017 Bowman Platinum Baseball checklist is showcased on foilboard stock, giving it a premium look. The base set includes 100 cards and other key rookies like Aaron Judge.

2017 Bowman Platinum Baseball Cards 1

Although technically an insert, the Top Prospects set adds another 110 cards, with 10 being short prints. Foil parallels for the TP cards include Purple, Green, Orange (Collector Box), Royal Blue (Fat Packs), Black (Value Box), Gold, and Printing Plates. There are even 10 Image Variations using subjects taken from the base and Top Prospect sets.

Other 2017 Bowman Platinum Baseball inserts focusing on young talent include Bowman's Next Generation, Platinum Presence and Rookie Radar.

2017 Bowman Platinum Baseball Autographs

Among the signed cards in the 2017 Bowman Platinum Baseball checklist, the Top Prospects Autographs insert parallels the primary offering for 45 subjects. More about seasoned stars and 2017 rookies, additional signatures come in the Major League Baseball Autographs set.

Featuring Bryce Harper, Cody Bellinger and Kris Bryant, the Tools of the Craft Autographs lineup provides a mixture of potential and established star power in die-cut form, while the Platinum Cut Autographs set is all about the budding talent. Finally, there are signed parallels for some of the base inserts with Platinum Presence Autographs and Rookie Radar Autographs.

2017 Bowman Platinum Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: First Bellinger RCs; fair retail pricing; moderate color per box.

Bad: Retail-only distribution can lead to gouging; sticker autographs.

The Bottom Line: Hyped heavily by the inclusion of the earliest pack-pulled Cody Bellinger rookie card, 2017 Bowman Platinum Baseball somewhat suffers from its own initial popularity. As the going box price gets further from SRP, collectors are unlikely to see that realized by what they pull, especially once Bellinger has more cards.

Staff Rating:
3.8 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.0/5.0

Bowman Platinum has seemingly gotten more bold in design over the years and 2017 may be the busiest yet. Of course, the foil is pronounced but there is a lot of background activity in the base set that feels more like a mishmash than a cohesive vision. Numbered as an insert but still really part of the main set, Top Prospects adds in a few paint streaks of color. These are even more disorienting to me and I miss the simple designs of previous years, like 2013 or 2014.

Given the basic nature of the set, 2017 Bowman Platinum actually has good insert variety. I find Rookie Radar striking with the large, circular background, and I also appreciate the elegance of the Platinum Presence cards, which are reminiscent of ‘90s Flair Showcase.

One thing that hurts long-term value on the design side is the sticker autographs. Platinum is already not one of the key brands that come to mind for prospect collectors, and the lack of on-card signatures greatly limits the lasting appeal.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

It has been said a thousand times, but Bellinger is what makes this product tick. Without his first rookie, demand would not be quite the same. Obviously, the Judge cards also help. Other than that, there is not a ton here to excite collectors besides the one-of-one Gold Foil parallels, which are basically SuperFractors minus the Chrome part. There are even a few image variations, which is less common in these retail-only sets.

While the signers are mainly prospects and rookies, including Judge and Bellinger, there are a few current stars such as Bryce Harper, Kris Bryant and Mike Trout. These, obviously, are rare, and Judge and Bellinger only have redemptions, which is not ideal.

Value: 4.0/5.0

When paying the retail price of $70, the Collector Boxes have solid value. Two sticker autographs and a base rookies for Bellinger and Judge puts you on the path to a decent return. Add in some numbered parallels of note and maybe a variation, and you are looking at even better value. The above value rating is based on getting it for the retail cost.

Two things can complicate that, however. First, the overall supply and distribution makes it harder for the average collector to get their hands on it directly. Since each Walmart location only gets a few of each format with some (or no) restocks, resellers may be the only option.

When you get to $100+ per box, value is more questionable at this point. Bellinger will have more rookies in the long run and while the first will always be relevant to many collectors, a base rookie can only go so high. Of course, long-term value is tougher to assess without knowing how much 2017 Bowman Platinum Baseball inventory is left to restock.

The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0

All things considered, I liked 2017 Bowman Platinum, and that is even with not caring for the base design. Both the insert variety and colorful parallels were decent, and it felt like it had more depth than I was expecting. Plus, the box even delivered the Bellinger base rookie. The hype on this one might lead to greater disappointment for some, but I was satisfied.

I have a question about these cards for anybody out there including you Trey. Just because the royal blue cards come in only the fat packs, does that necessarily qualify them as an SP? I personally don’t think so but I would really appreciate feedback from anybody reading or from you Trey. Thanks very much and I hope to hear something from somebody eventually.

Scot, with all due respect, your information is inaccurate! I know the main person who does the distributing for Excel Marketing, which distributes the cards to national Target stores. Target did NOT receive this product! The product has been sold out of the warehouse since early July, with boxes still floating around. Less than 4000 master boxes have been made. If you find one, pick it up because that was the extent of their distribution. This is a beautiful product that was “retail” only, limited, and loaded with autos of not only major league stars, but hot prospects coming up!

Unlike many people on here I have had no trouble finding this product. Although advertised as a Walmart release only it saw an earlier release at Target stores and currently can be found in another large retailer here in Ky. Many dealers at the card shows had snapped up all they could find to jack the prices up. A $21.99 blaster box was going for $35 at the show and $6.00 pack were $10. still a damn nice product though. All this in a city of 400,000.

hey troy..the Bellinger Superfactor On-card auto has been pulled..saw it posted on KIR …2017 topps chrome…sorry bro..i know right..didnt take long.

Troy you obviously know what your talking about and have shut me down proving I’m an idiot. Your right your paper foil, sticker, insert auto that technically isn’t even a rookie card is the best Bellinger auto ever and nothing will ever trump it just because it’s an SSP 1/1. I now regret trying to sound smart up against someone who has such an extensive knowledge of this hobby that they thought Bowman CHROME had already been released. You should hold on to the card cause you might get only $500 for it. His 2015 Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman base auto that isn’t even numbered goes for $500 right now. I dare to say that card being a base and not numbered is more significant than your 1/1. But like I said what do I know. I now will retire from responding cause I don’t want to sound and dumber than I already have.

Ryan semrow 2017 Bowman chrome is already out and he does not have an auto in it! I have his 2017 Bowman chrome red, orange , gold, green, blue refractors plus all paper color variations and a ton of base of both? Never seen heard nor is it listed anywhere that Cody Bellinger has an on card auto or sticker on card auto in the 2017 Bowman chrome series? He doesn’t have any autographs period in 2016 Bowman chrome. His only bowman on card autos come from 2015 Bowman chrome draft and no one has found thee auto super of that series to date. In the 2017 Bowman platinum his base has no auto variation. The only autographed cards are on inserts and the cuts auto is the rarest of all inserts in this set /25 base versions, /10 black versions, and 1/1 gold foil version (mine) that’s a whole lot of 36 in total. Now you may be talking about Bowman sterling? Or maybe even Topps chrome? But in any Bowman/Topps product since 2016 till today this is his BEST card out there. I do wish the best of luck to all on finding any other 2017 Autographed Superfractor of Cody Bellinger the fun is in the hunt! I also don’t understand how the claim a SSP auto super is less desired than a base auto super? Please don’t bash or down play the significance of this card until this card is trumped by either his 2015 Bowman chrome draft autographed superfractor or a 2017 Topps chrome autographed superfractor emerges please. Thanks.

Lol Troy once Bellinger gets his ON-CARD chrome RC auto out of 2017 Bowman Chrome that’s coming out in September most interest for his slightly thick paper sticker auto will evaporate. Plus the platinum cuts auto is an insert auto of his. The ones that go for big money are the regular version not the insert versions. I’m not saying you got a bad card I mean if I got it I would probably be on here telling the whole world too. I’m just saying sell it now to get the most you can for it cause if you hold on to it don’t be surprised when the value drops significantly once the set I mentioned above comes out in a month and a half.

This product is amazing! I love it and one of the best I have bought in a long time. Found a blaster box at my local walmart and got Aaron Judge RC #99 Cody Bellinger Auto #49 and most of the other top rookies! The design is pretty good but could be better since the foil is so easy to damage or could be damaged coming out of a pack. However went to 6 other walmarts and couldn’t even find a pack let alone a box. I really want one of the collector boxes to try and get Judge auto. I am willing to pay the inflated prices on ebay because of how amazing this product is and from what I read above seems sold out almost everywhere. Wish the ebay prices were less, but to echo the review above I am worried that the collector boxes will go to $500 since this set is loaded as far as I can tell :) Thanks Bowman

It’s not hype Judge and Bellinger are legit just look at the stats enough said. Oh wait not enough I got the 1/1 cuts auto superfractor of Bellinger best card in the whole series! The hunts over this is his first auto superfractor RC. If somebody ever finds the 2015 Bowman chrome auto super of him it will be the only card to trump mine good luck and happy hunting!

I bought a lot of this product this year. I have a question, more than a review. Is this the only product where I can purchase retail and get the exact same opportunities than if I were to buy Hobby? I fell in love with this set last year because of that fact. The fact that I don’t have to pay a “premium” to get what I want/or that I’m getting a “discount” but not getting the opportunity to get what I want. I guess its a Catch 22, but for someone who doesn’t have $500/wk to drop on Hobby & Jumbo’s this distribution plan is awesome. As Bain said “We give it back to the People”

More Walmart Garbage with ugly cards designs! This set has sucked since 2010 the last good year it had in my opinion. heritage is so much more for your money…

Nicely designed product. Not one hard signed auto card, though. It’s a sticker dump just like last year. Other than that the value is obviously great because the product is loaded with Bellinger and Judge cards. I ripped 7 blasters and 13 fat packs and pulled 3 autos, 7 Bellinger and 3 Judge. I decided to sell the 4 collectors boxes which isn’t something I’d normally do, but couldn’t resist this time around – as the value in previous years plummets quickly.

After finding some fat packs in a local retailer 7/22 I went on a tour of several other sites of the same retailer.

I hit 6 stores all together and got 13 blasters at 58 fat packs.

This chain is a regional one based in the mid west and it is not wal mart or target.

I go to at least 2 of the locations that I hit today every week.

So this product wasnt there until Th 7/20 or Fri 7/21.

Id find it hard to believe they pulled it from walmart and sent it to this chain but the distributor that stocks cards here locally also stocks at walmart so who knows.

Based on my limited sample size it doesnt seem that limited around here…. I may change my tune if I dont see more stocked at the end of next week

I obviously found way more Bowman Platinum than I did Bowman Mega boxes but there arent that many Targets compared to the other retailer….

Not sure why everyone gets worked up about the Judge and Bellinger as I dont consider them rookie cards, they are just the first Bowman Platinum of those cats but Ill take advantage of the situation as I have 4 rules about cards

Panini stinks

I place a high premium on opening packs

If I have it, it isnt rare

Sell, sell, sell, 99.9% all cards go down….

btw..i found some platinum at toys r us..they use same distributor. and walmarts in my area don’t sell cards.

hey david..im not sure if your talking about Walmart warehouse or MJ holding warehouse..?? Walmart dosnt actually sell cards..and topps dosnt sell cards to Walmart. Topps sells to distridutors..and they decide who, where, when, how to stock walmarts…all walmarts should be sold out..as mj holding will ship it to them if representative asks for it…then it ships from MJ warehouse to Walmart store/warehouse..then rep shows up to store and goes into back and gets ” his ” boxes to go and stock…or at least that was my understanding…so walmarts warehouse should all be sold out..but distributors warehouse I’m sure is fully stocked…The mega box debacle was a total fluke..topps never short prints anything..exp. retail products..my guess is only stores who have high sales and low theift will be stores mj holding choses to restock..and your right,,i highly doubt most walmarts will get more…as products tend to stay in high sellers / low theft walmarts…just my guess tho…as for walmarts bringing other walmarts ..thats most likely not correst..yes that does happen..but its still to early for a Walmart to say..hey take this back its not selling…its only been out for barely over 2 weeks..for avg. retail collector..these have been super awesome..get bang for your buck…so I def don’t see them just sitting on shelfs waiting for MJ holding to pick them up…but of course..i could be wrong…personally ive pulled 4 very low number autos for my display…holding onto 1 hobby box and 1 blaster tho just in case your right..haha

With all do respects to the collectors who are still finding the Platinum cards in your stores, I will again reiterate that they were SOLD OUT of the warehouse in 24 hours! They have NOT made anymore, and if you are finding them it is because what were sent out is still floating around. The Walmarts that did receive them, got a shrink wrapped container with 2 master boxes, five blaster boxes, and 8 fat packs. Anything more, has been moved from another store. I’m sure that most of you out there have seen the last of these boxes, or will soon. For people selling the Bellinger for cheap, buy them up.

The Wal-Mart locations where I live are starting to get these cards back in stock. The prices on E-bay are also softening as Bellinger rookies are now selling for under $10.00 now.

Pulled the 1/1 Gold Superfractor auto of Dodgers top prospect Alex Verdugo … from Wal-Mart … I could not be happier, though I did not get much color other than that. Only one numbered and the other auto was $2. But I guess they weren’t going to load up the box after the Superfractor auto.

I AGREE WITH ANDY. I WENT TO MY LOCAL WALLY WORLD TONIGHT AND THERE WAS 11 FAT PACKS. THESE WERE SOLD OUT LAST WEEK. I OPENED 2 OF THE PACKS AND GOT A BELINGER ROOKIE AND A JUDGE GREEN ROOKIE RADAR #99. VERY HAPPY😀

Andy, the Platinum baseball is sold out of the warehouse! You may have gotten lucky where the product was moved from one store to the one you were at. I’m trying to give you 100% accurate info. Take it as you please!!

The one and done may not be true everywhere…Found a collector box, 1 Value box, and 6 Fat packs at a Walmart in Spartanburg SC that was previously sold out…

David D.
David D.

I know for a FACT that this product was a “one and done” deal. Good luck to all the dealers that sold these boxes for next to nothing. With no other Belinger cards out for months, this product with go sky high! I predict boxes upwards of $500.00 in the next year! Less than 4,000 Master boxes made!!!!

I realize the card companies have to change designs to keep things interesting, however, it would be nice if they kept something about the sport that they are playing in the background. That’s just my opinion but in my opinion these cards are more like artsy graphic design cards than they are baseball cards. Some of the cards look nice . Won’t be purchasing many of these. Jim

I went to 4 walmarts saturday night, went 0 for 4. only one walmart had price tags on the shelf dated the day before i was there, the other 3 had nothing.. no display tray, no price tags, nothing. I might try again tomorrow. This is the area below seattle, WA. and 2 were super walmarts. Looks like no chase for me so far :/

Since this is Cody Bellinger’s first official rookie card professional dealers have been scooping up every box they can find to move his cards on the secondary market. On 7/6 Ebay sellers were listing his standard issue card for as much as $80.00 with parallels going for much higher. Currently prices have fallen to much more reasonable levels of $12.00 to $15.00 on average. In a week or two I fully expect prices to fall to about $7.00 to $10.00 on average which is most likely the real world value of the card. Bowman Platinum is not a high end premium product even though it has a nice high end looking design. This was meant to be a low to mid end product affordable for everyday collectors and past products reflect this in the values or the cards. With Bellinger and Judge mania in full force any new release will have dealers scooping up product jacking up prices for anyone wanting the cards right away. Simply wait and you will find what you want for reasonable prices online or simply look for the boxes to appear again on WalMart shelves for regular price.

Yeah, that’s a shame guys. I was lucky enough to know that this product was releasing on july 5th, however, depending on where you live also depends when your vendor will actually stock it. The vendor in my area stocks on Friday and I was actually there friday morning while he was stocking it. I got lucky. I only bought the 2 collector boxes and left the blasters and packs. I went back later that day to get a couple of blasters to make a complete set and there were only 2 blasters left. Even the display tray was gone😲 I drove to 2 other walmarts in other towns and found nothing there. Not even a display tray. Who knows maybe somebody will be selling the empty trays on eBay soon for 30.00. Just like the guy selling empty target bowman megs boxes on eBay. Geez, what is the world coming too. Yeah, it’s not fair. However, you need to be on top of it to get what you want. If you really want a box, get on your phone and call walmarts that you are willing to drive to and ask the walmart employee to check for you. It will save you a wasted trip. If they have it, they will hold it for you until you get there. Hope this helps everybody out. Happy hunting.

I went to 4 Walmart stores today and all I found were empty trays at each one. They were not there Friday night and I was at one store when it opened this morning. I only found 4 fat packs at this store and nothing at the others. A shame indeed.

Boring product. Too much hype for this lazy design. Dealers have bought them all up and doubling the price for a huge let down. I found one box in my town of 150,000 people and I was underwhelmed by the product. Save your money.

Very nice product at a great price. Bought 2 collectors boxes and 2 blasters. Pulled a Eloy Jimenez auto, Luis Alexander basabe auto, raudy read purple ref auto #150, Mickey Moniak platinum cuts die-cut auto #25 and a Ahmed Rosario auto out of one of the blasters. Did not get a full set out of the four boxes and did not pull any Aaron judge rookie cards. Did pull 4 Bellinger rookies though. Coilation could have been better and the collector boxes packs move back and forth in the box. Topps really needs to pack these better. The collector box is really big looking, but half the box is empty and thats not a good thing for topps or the collector’s. Tough set to build. Will take at least 4 collector boxes if you get the right mix to build the set. Overall, I am happy with product and the price if you are lucky enough to find them at walmart. Each walmart is only receiving 2 collector boxes, 4 blasters and 8 fat packs. They are in a display tray and thats all that fits in it. Idk if they will restock after the first shipment. Good luck on the hunt.

This product ended up being a scam.. the local vendor here delivered an empty box. So he clearly kept them for the autographs. Great job Topps Bowman Walmart.

Scarce product, and prices are not reflecting this yet. After finding them at my nearest Walmart a day after they were supposed to be released (I bought two collector boxes and four blasters), I called or visited the remaining 11 stores within 20 miles and none had any. I went back to the first store and the remaining stock was gone. The manager said he was told that there would be no more. We shall see…

Overrated Product…When this Cody B. is worth more them Mike Trout something is wrong.
