Back in action after a short break, 2016 Bowman Platinum Baseball marks the return of Platinum to the hobby after being silent in 2015. Printed on reflective foil stock, the set continues its legacy as a more elegant option for prospect collectors and is only found at Walmart.

2016 Bowman Platinum Baseball features a 100-card base set filled with notable MLB veterans and rookies as well as another 110 cards reserved for Top Prospects, which fall at least one per pack in every format. Ten of the prospects are short prints, including Aaron Judge and Wilson Contreras. Collectors can count on multiple parallels in play for both sets, specifically Ice (Value Box exclusive), Purple (#/250), Green (#/99), Orange (#/25), Black (1/1) and Printing Plates (1/1) .

2016 Bowman Platinum Baseball Cards 2

Heavy on young talent, Veteran/Rookie Autographs and Top Prospect Autographs offer plenty of signed content in 2016 Bowman Platinum Baseball. Additional signed inserts include Platinum Cut Autographs and Platinum Presence Autographs. There are also limited parallels for the autographs.

Lastly, 2016 Bowman Platinum Baseball closes out with a trio of 30-card inserts in Bowman Next Generation, Bowman Next Generation Prospects and Platinum Presence. These also include Purple (#/250), Green (#/99), Orange (#/25), and Black (1/1) parallels.

UPDATE (12/14): While it was initially exclusive to Walmart, 2016 Bowman Platinum Baseball has received larger distribution through GTS.

Product Review

2016 Bowman Platinum Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Appealing look, good list of veteran/rookies and prospect signers.

Bad: Sticker autographs, truncated checklist.

The Bottom Line: Bowman Platinum returns following a one-year hiatus with much of the same quality collectors associate with the brand. The lack of on-card autographs is a letdown and might be a deal-breaker for some. However, the simple elegance combined with a good mix of young signers makes for an intriguing option if you are looking for something different than the standard Bowman/Bowman Draft/Bowman Chrome route.

Staff Rating:
0 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.0/5.0

Seemingly plain and complex at the same time, the foil finish is splashed with random color, which does give 2016 Bowman Platinum Baseball a bit more personality. Still, the rounded frames at the bottom of the base cards are a little odd for my tastes as it draws my attention away from the player.

While just slightly different, I prefer the design of the Top Prospects insert much more and also appreciate the refined nature of the Platinum Presence inserts. Bowman Next Generation does jump out a bit thanks to the large team logos that occupy most of the background design, but the designs seem to all roll together after a while.

You can't really blame the design for this, but the biggest overall problem for the prospect-driven set is the sticker autographs. This is especially true since most other prospect products utilize on-card signatures.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

While most are names seen before, the signer's list features popular rookies and prospects with even a few notable veterans in the mix. However, compared to earlier editions of BP, this is more like Bowman Platinum lite. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean the overall checklist is more basic than it has previously been with no relics and just a few inserts. It is also noticeable that the base Prospects subset (and the many Refractors) was replaced with a larger Top Prospects insert.

Value: 3.5/5.0

Split into several formats and initially only found at Walmart, the Collector’s Box is essentially the hobby format (and the box version I opened). The two guaranteed autographs are nice and although the base hits aren’t numbered, the checklist is solid. However, stickers hurt the value and $80+ per box is perhaps a little steep for a prospect-heavy release that doesn’t have the same drawing power as the main Bowman line.

The Fun Factor: 3.75/5.0

I like that Bowman Platinum offers something a little different for prospect collectors and am glad to see it return to lineup, even in a more limited capacity. It’s also nice that collectors without a local card shop can still get hobby-quality cards at their Walmart. Still, the simplification of the release plus the sticker autographs make for an unfinished product in my eyes that doesn't quite match up to BP releases in the past.

I was a little worried when I saw this box at walmart, I’m sure we only got one box in cause I never saw them before and again.. just one box with a 70 dollar tag on it.. why worried? Cause baseball has the highest odds of failure when opening a box.. I took a chance and got REALLY lucky.. first auto was Orlando Arcia.. decent player, nothing to jump about.. second auto, at the time, I didn’t realize jusT how BIG a name he is………..VLADAMIR GUERRERO JR! Numbered to 150.. a few years later, it’s 2019 and he’s finally in the majors! At the time, the card was only like 60 on ebay.. but even in 2017 (bought this in February 2017), the card paid for the box.. two autos, one decent the other a a BIG name! Talk about luck!

Wonder if the Ice Parallel cards in the blaster boxes have the SP versions of guys like Contreras, too?

Josslyn Ray
Josslyn Ray

Trey,

I haven’t seen, or missed, anyone asking about a base “refractor” besides the ice parallel. I have pulled numerous veteran players with some sort of parallel, as well as the card being on a slightly thicker stock. Do you have any information? I have scanned the cards, and there is definitely a difference; they weigh more, too. Thanks in advance.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

It’s possible but the only thing I have seen is the Refractor inserts and numbered parallels. Normally the pack odds would indicate a base Refractor parallel. Other collectors reported that the SP cards were thicker, as well. Did you pull them all from one specific format?

MattR
MattR

How can I need over 60% of the base set but a blaster box and all but 2 of the base are doubles. Poor mixing of cards.

Question regarding autos: Do some of these autos only have parallel versions I have yet to see a Adam walker base auto anywhere ? Any info

Great cards in this Bowman Platinum set. I only wish the TPs were numbered. Also hope CBC will do a list/photo version of all the SP cards in this set. I’m glad Platinum is back.

Andy Mooney
Andy Mooney

IS TP-WC actually 2 different cards or just listed twice in the above checklist? Wish the TP’s were numbered instead od using initials…real pain to sort!

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Andy Mooney Looks like there are two different TP cards for Contreras. The common version features him in catcher’s gear and the SP shows him batting.

Ryan Semrow

Great product in all its formats. Each format has its own thing going on. The collectors box is for autos, blaster box has a bonus pack of ice parallels and the rack pack is the easiest to hit the base SP’s. I killed it on a collectors box getting a 1/25 Correa auto and a 68/75 Arcia auto. I normally don’t buy retail because I believe hobby to be a better value but with this being a Walmart exclusive the product isn’t watered down like retail normally is. You have a good chance of hitting something nice in all three formats, as I have buying all 3.

Always liked the look of this set. Picked up two collector boxes. Only got three duplicates and almost finished the basic set. I did get a Platinum Presence auto of Daz Cameron 70/75. This checklist doesn’t mention these having any parallels. Figured I would let you know.

Kevin
Kevin

The SP are slightly thicker stock. It’s immediately apparent in a stack which ones are which. Odds put them at basically a case hit though. I hit one in one of the “collector” boxes.

If their are 2 wilson contreras prospect cards with the same number how are we supposed to tell them apart. Only seen 1 picture on ebay.

I found this stuff stocked and it was pretty good. The boxes for $70 are well worth the price ?

Jessi Yborra
Jessi Yborra

has the release date been pushed back…?

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Jessi Yborra It’s a retail release which means the expected date is largely meaningless. It boils down to when each locations gets it and stocks the shelves. Could be days, if not weeks, in some spots.

Eric
Eric

Is there any indication so far whether autos will be guaranteed? If so, how many per box?

Jonathan Warden
Jonathan Warden

Is this only sold in blaster boxes? I’ll definitely pick up a few of them! Luckily there is a Walmart close by that sells cards!

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Jonathan Warden That was not expressly stated. Blasters were only referenced because the Ice cards are exclusive to that format. I assume there will be other retail formats as well.
