User Rating:

2015 Topps Star Wars: Journey to the Force Awakens trading cards go all the way back to the franchise's hobby roots and offers the first cards of the seventh film. Done in a style similar to 2004 Topps Star Wars Heritage, it is inspired largely by old designs to create new content. Hobby boxes come with a pair of premium inserts, which include autographs, sketch cards and more.

The base set is 110 cards. Printed on heavy Heritage-style card stock, they use the iconic blue starfield design from the original 1977 Topps Star Wars Series 1 set. Both the original trilogy and the prequels are included on the checklist. There are also cards that give a glimpse at The Force Awakens.

The 2015 Topps Star Wars: Journey to The Force Awakens has a lot of parallels. And rather than simply going with basic color names, they adopt a theme to go with it that ties into the series:

Jabba Slime Green Starfield - 1 per pack
Black Starfield - 1:2
Death Star Silver - 1:4
Lightsaber Neon Red Starfield - 1:6
Lightsaber Purple Starfield - 1:12
Hoth Frosted Ice - #/150
Gold Starfield - #/50
Holofoil Starfield - #/25
Imperial Red - 1/1

All of the serial numbered parallels are hobby exclusives.

Autographs are inspired by the stickers that were included in the first set of Topps Star Wars trading cards. They do use stickers. More than 30 signers are planned for the set, including some first-time signers. Besides basic autographs, there are Silver (#/50), Gold (#/10) and Imperial Guard Red (1/1) parallels. Four different Dual Autographs come numbered to 3 while two Triple Autographs are limited to five serial-numbered copies each.

Other premium inserts include Sketch Cards, manufactured Patch Cards (that includes The Force Awakens), Printing Plates and Autograph Printing Plates. There are also Buyback Cards. These are original 1977 Topps Star Wars cards that have a Force Awakens foil stamp. Similar buybacks were done with 2007 Topps Star Wars 30th Anniversary that proved to be popular at the time.

2015 Topps Star Wars: Journey to The Force Awakens has several basic inserts as well. Character Stickers (18 cards) bring back the familiar sticker design. The checklist mixes new and old faces. The sticky theme continues with Material Stickers (nine cards). Concept Art (nine cards) highlights some of Ralph McQuarrie's early planning for the franchise. Character Silhouettes (eight cards) give new characters the spotlight on Rainbow Foil stock. Blueprints (nine cards) offer a schematic look at some of the best-known ships from a galaxy far, far away. Behind the Scenes (nine cards) inserts use the orange design of the 1978 Topps Star Wars Series 5 set. The original set had many cards that offered looks from the other side of the camera.

One more thing, you can also find the full set of this in the “Force Awakens” Topps online exclusive complete sets (which include this Journey set, plus Series 1 and 2 sets). The standard set has “Complete Set” foil stamps on all the cards, and the Limited Edition set has “Limited Edition” foil stamps on all of the cards.

There are at least six promo cards for this set labeled P1 – P6. I know because I have all of them. The back says “Journey to the Force Awakens” on them and you can find some on eBay.

As for the Silhouette Foil Cards, there are only 8 even though it says there is 9 cards on the back. Error by Topps.

Also, FYI, the “family” Walmart exclusive insert cards come in two varieties: Heritage stock and glossy (white back).

Is there a list of promo cards for this set? So far I’ve only found one card. Un-numbered “dealers card showing several cards on the front and a Manufacturers coupon on the back. It is trading card size, not sure where it’s from.

I have a question about the Character Silhouette Foil Cards. On the back of the cards it say, “Collect all NINE cards”, but all I can find are EIGHT. Is that a misprint? Or are there actually 9 cards?

Does anyone know if there are autographs in hanger boxes? I thought those were only in hobby boxes but I see people selling hanger boxes saying there is a chance to get a auto or sketch card?

I think you have the captions for #38 and 39 as well as #76 and 77 reversed. #38 should be “The Rebellion’s Last Hope”, #39 should be Assault on the Death Star, #76 should be “Assault on the Second Death Star, #77 should be “The final duel”.

What are the odds of getting the blue print cards? Plus what are the odds of getting the family legacy cards? I have repeats of Skywalker fett and Lars. They say they are exclusive but does that necessarily mean they are rare? I got 7 repeats out of 42 cards. Are those good odds? Thanks

NONE of the buyback cards are stamped with the force awakens foil???

You have to buy the 14 or 16 card pack at Target to get the exclusive cards.

Just bought 4 more dual packs at Walmart and got 4 blueprints.

I meant I bought 3 of the 10 pack boxes from Target and didn’t get one Target exclusive.

Blue prints can also be found at Walmart too. I bought 4 dual packs and have 3 blue prints from there. I’ve bought 3 big 10 pack boxes and 2 individual packs and didn’t get one single Target exclusive.

Card #9 is the missing card. The checklist has it listed as 8 cards, it is just that the backs of the actual cards say that the subset is 9 cards in total but it was confirmed on the FB page by Topps that it is an error.

Randall S
Randall S

FYI The Foil subset from this series is listing it as a 9 card set but there are only 8 FOIL CARDS TOTAL in this set.

Randall S Much appreciated. This is the list that came direct from Topps. Which card is not included?

I thought that these cards were bland. The base set feels like something we’ve seen before from Topps when it comes to Star Wars. Many folks seem to like the set so I may definitely be in the majority. I was very excited for a product based on the upcoming movie and thought this was a bit of a letdown. Could be my expectations were too high but I am glad to see others do like these cards.

There is a really good facebook group for the physical cards for trading, etc if anyone is interested:

The last 1/4 of the set focuses on the upcoming movie, made up of still shots from the trailers, so expect no surprises. I do like the old-school version of the cards, but the alternate border colors are pointless, and the typical foil cards aren’t a big deal. In addition to the base set, I snagged 2 of the cloth stickers, a sketch card of snowspeeders and an Amy Allen/Aayla Secura autograph.

I pulled a red buyback card from a sealed hobby box, but it was not stamped.

Interestingly, at a local Target today I found three types of pack configurations.

1) Jumbo hanger pack (standard wrapper with hanger hole) – 16 cards
2) Jumbo hanger box (cardboard box with hanger hole) – 18 cards
3) Blister Pack with 3 packs x 6 cards per pack (18 total)

Each was $4.99.

I bought 3 hanger boxes, which I have not opened yet, and one of the 3-pack blisters.

The interesting part was that, in the blister pack (see pictures), each pack contained a Classic Captions (CC-x) Insert which are listed on Cardboard Connection as “Walgreens exclusives”, but these packs were clearly from Target. The pic shows cards from each pack lined up in a row horizontally.

One final note of interest is that I found ALL of these packs back in the Star Wars toy section of the store, not up with all of the other trading cards in the front of the store.

Basically, each pack contained:
1 standard issue Blue Starfield Base Card
1 Jabba Green Slime Parallel
1 Classic Captions (CC-x) insert,
1 Death Star Silver Parallel or 1 Black Starfield Parallel
2 other inserts (Got 2 Foil Cards F-3 and F-6, 1 Sticker S-16, 1 Power of the First Order FO-6, 2 Heroes of the Resistance R-6 and R-6)
1 pack also contained a Star Wars Card Trader Code Card as an extra.

Overall very cool cards !!

Obviously, I did not include pictures here, but posted on another forumcut and pasted text here

One change from the above: Battle Damaged appears to have been replaced with Lightsaber Purple in the final set.
