User Rating:

2014 Bowman Baseball marks the 25th anniversary of Topps reviving its one-time competitor. When they did, Topps rebranded it as a product focused largely on rookies and prospects. For the most part, 2014 Bowman Baseball sticks with the same formula it has used for several years now. It's the same formula that has made it one of the hobby's top-selling products as well. Baseball's youth get the primary spotlight (would you want it any other way) with a variety of prospect inserts, autographs, Chrome cards, Refractors and more.

The 2014 Bowman Baseball base set holds fast with a 220-card checklist that includes both rookies who debuted late in 2013 and key veterans. State and Home Town versions return, using a flag on the card to show where they're from. The number of base Bowman colors parallels explode with nine different parallels: Blue (#/500), Orange (#/250), Green (#/150), Yellow (#/99), Silver (#/75), Gold (#/50), Black (#/25), Purple (#/10), and Red (1/1). If that wasn't enough, there are Printing Plates as well.

Bowman Chrome Autographed Rookie Cards are hobby exclusives. These inserts have eight levels of numbered Refractor parallels. Print runs range from 500 down to 1/1 Superfractors.

The 110 base Bowman Prospect cards aren't so daunting on the parallel front. The have Blue (#/500), Orange (#/250), Red (1/1) and Printing Plate versions to go with the regular cards.

Always one of the main draws of the product, Bowman Chrome Prospects showcase baseball's rising stars. The Refractor rainbow returns, challenging player collectors and prospectors. Parallels include basic Refractors (#/500), Blue Refractors (#/250), Black Refractors (#/99), Green Refractors (#/75), Gold Refractors (#/50), Orange Refractors (#/25), Red Refractors (#/5), Printing Plates and Superfractors (1/1).

2014 Bowman Baseball hobby boxes guarantee one autograph. The majority are Bowman Chrome Prospect Autographs, which are seen as the top cards for debuting signers -- even more so than most official rookie cards. They have the same basic Refractor structure as regular Bowman Chrome Prospect cards save for a couple of changes. Autographed Blue Refractors are numbered to 150. Collectors can also find Purple Prospect Autographs. Numbered to 10, they are exclusive to jumbo boxes.

In case all these parallels weren't enough, base and Prospect cards also have Silver Ice parallels that fall one per hobby box and two per jumbo box. Besides basic versions, there are also Red Ice (#/25), Autographed Red Ice (#/25), Purple Ice (#/10) and White Ice (1/1) versions.

But wait, there's more! Hobby boxes have randomly inserted Blue Wave Refractor and Black Wave Refractor Hot Packs. The special Blue Wave packs also have random Red Wave Chrome Refractors (#/25) and Blue Wave Chrome Refractor Prospect Autographs(#/50). Black Wave hot packs also have Silver Wave Chrome Refractors (#/25) and Black Wave Chrome Prospect Autographs (#/50).

In honor of Bowman 2.0's 25th anniversary, every 2014 Bowman-brand release includes a selection of 1989 Bowman Is Back Silver Diamond Refractors. These use the 1989 Bowman Baseball design as its inspiration, only with new players and a lot more shine. Besides basic versions, hobby and jumbo packs have Black Refractor Autographs (#/25). Exclusive to hobby boxes are 1989 Bowman Buyback Autographs (#/5).

The Lucky Redemption Program returns with five cards. These are mystery redemptions that will be announced as the set releases and new players debut.

Other returning components in 2014 Bowman Baseball include AFLAC Perfect Game and Under Armour All-American Game Autographs, Bowman Black Autographs (#/25, Violet parallels #/10), Social Media Autographs (#/10), Dual Franchise Autograph Refractors (#/25) and Bowman's Top 100 Prospects inserts. Top 100 parallels include Die-Cut Refractors (#/99), Autographed Die-Cut X-Fractors (#/24) and Autographed Die-Cut Atomic Refractors (1/1).

Chrome Refractor Minis are back for a second season. This set includes five top prospects from each organization. And what would Chrome be without Refractors? Mini cards have seven levels of Refractor parallels. Chrome Refractor Autograph Mini Cards come with three parallels of their own.

The only memorabilia cards in 2014 Bowman Baseball are All-Star Futures Game Relics. Numbered to 25, these cards have jersey swatches from the annual event.

Limited to five copies across the entire product run is an Ultimate Prospect Autograph Book Card that has signatures from 25 top prospects.

Random 2014 Bowman Baseball boxes come with added goodies. Oversized 1989 Bowman Autographs are numbered to 20. The jumbo theme continues with Oversized Silver Ice cards numbered to 99. These have Red (#/10), White (1/1) and Purple Autographed (#/25) parallels.

The Bowman Golden Debut Contract program returns. Those who find a contract in their box get an autographed ball from a top baseball prospect. They also have a chance to appear on a 2015 Bowman Baseball card.

2014 Bowman Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Ryan Cracknell

Good: Good timing for big-name prospects, better mix of inserts than past years.

Bad: Way too many parallels, just one autograph per box.

The Bottom Line: How much is too much? That’s the challenge 2014 Bowman Baseball throws down. It’s the first major prospecting product of the year that couldn’t have hit at a better time thanks to fast starts from Jose Abreu and Masahiro Tanaka. It’s not a groundbreaking set as far as design goes, but it’s clean. And while I like most of the parallels and Refractors, I wonder if the brand has hit a breaking point.

Staff Rating:
3.4 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.0/5.0

Bowman is Bowman. Over the past few years, the base design hasn’t changed drastically. Some might call that boring. In some ways, it does take away from the iconography a yearly set can have going for something a little more generic. But at the same time, these Bowman designs are clean and simple. The do make for nice cards.

And while I’m going to delve into what I see are the negatives of the massive amount of parallels shortly, the do look nice. I’m especially a fan of the newer Ice and Wave designs Topps has introduced in the last couple of years. They add some texture to the look as well as getting beyond the redundant different coloured borders.

The Bowman Chrome Prospect Autographs are tough to ignore. They use simplicity to their advantage. There’s just enough white space to balance out the image and the on-card signature. As far as simple cards go, these are some of my favorite in the hobby.

Checklist: 3.0/5.0

While many complained when Topps largely held Kris Bryant and Mark Appel back from 2013 Bowman Draft. Really, though, it was a smart move. At the time, there was no guarantees there’d be any Abreus or Tanakas. Now there are several of big prospects to go around. And that’s a good thing because there’s a pretty big drop off after the key prospects. This is nothing new, but when a lot of the product revolves around the single autograph it is important.

Where 2014 Bowman stumbles, at least for me, is with the parallels. There are way too many. Factoring in the Paper, Chrome and Mini cards, all of which have the same general design, you’re looking at a couple dozen cards for a lot of the prospects. Those that have autographs, it’s even more. I understand the draw. And I like how most of them look. Also, having more parallels makes it easier to have more rare cards. Fifteen years ago, you were lucky to get one card numbered to 200 or less. Now you’re likely to get a handful. But it begs the question, what is actually rare?

One last thing that would be nice about the parallels were if they took on their own branding across all sets as far as rarity goes. So whether it’s Bowman, Topps Finest or Topps Chrome, a Gold Refractor is going to mean a card numbered to 50, Reds are out of 5, etc. You see this sometimes, but not consistently enough. There are enough options to make this happen, even if it means a rare parallel here is easier to find a high-end product. The impact help collectors know what to expect. And when you’re staring down upwards of 50 parallels, little consistent things like this can clear up a lot of confusion.

Value: 3.0/5.0

While lots of competing prospect sets offer lots of autographs in a box, Bowman is still set with one per hobby box. Granted, the price is lower than most of its competitors, but it’s still behind. Even Bowman Chrome is upping the ante this year (only to have it drop back for Bowman Draft). The problem with the one-per-box autograph is that when you get, say a 30th round pitcher who is still in A ball and has had Tommy John surgery, it’s tough to get excited about it. There is a lot more to a box, but it’s that autograph promise that carries a lot of the clout. Getting a second 30th round pick wouldn’t be great, but it certainly would feel more reasonable (even if the price tag jumped $5-10 a box).

With all the different avenues that people can collect Bowman, there are plenty of ways to get solid value out of a box even outside the autograph. I just wonder how long that can be sustained if the checklist keeps growing rather than evolving.

The Fun Factor: 3.5/5.0

Prospect sets are inherently fun. It just takes time. I’m not big into prospecting, but I usually find myself holding onto the Chrome Prospect cards simply to check up on them a couple times a year. It gives me a chance to go through a stack of cards and look for something new. It just might not mean a ton in the short-term.

I also like the analytical touches the brand is including more of with things like the Top 100 insert line. It would be nice if they were a little easier to find and connected more directly with an online program (like a QR code that connected to a Topps or partnering site with real-time stats). But they’re a nice touch.

My biggest issue with the product is one of overkill. There’s just too much that similar but different. The model feels like it’s being efficient to a fault. I don’t know if there’s a magic answer. One that I’d wouldn’t complain about would be the elimination of the Paper cards and having the brand shift towards a three-series Bowman Chrome model. Instantly, that would kill a lot of the parallel problems. And let’s face it, most people want the Chrome anyway and largely forget about the Paper. Perhaps Paper could be done as a factory set to keep its fans happy.

At the end, Bowman is a set that’s kind of like wine. Often, if you let it sit, it improves with age. But let it sit too long and it can sour as prospects hit their peak and flop. My big wish would be that the focus move more towards the prospects themselves with more analysis an number-crunching instead of constantly bolstering it with more colors.

JMO says he pulled a chrome jose abreu auto out of a walmart blaster. There are NO chrome autos in retail. None but Orange Wave autos numbered to 5. Take your lies somewhere else.

HIT THE JOSE ABREU WHITE ICE 1/1 OVERSIZED CARD. GOT IT GRADED BGS 9.5!!!

I done VERY well with this product.. prolly more so than any other ever!… I only bought into 1 case break (Astros and twins ofr about $120 total), and about 7 retail blaster boxes… in the case break I was lucky and pulled a Byron buxton purple ice auto #/10 which I got graded and is a 9.5/10 beckett sitting in my collection….also pulled mark appel oversized boxtopper auto #/25 from same break… in the first blaster box I bought from walmrt, I pulled a jose Abreu chrome auto and like the 5th retail blaster box I bought, pulled a lucky redemption auto (kris Bryant refractor auto #/500)….so I pulled basically about all the big name stuff you could get prospect/rookie wise in a matter of 1 months time… prolly will never get that lucky with any product ever again

Issac, blue were 1:38(I think) and orange 1:87(that I do know). But I wanna know how many were produced of each player

Mike, a guy on eBay has a purple paper he says is exclusive to retail! But here it says just jumbos!

How many of the blue/orange wave chrome cards were produced? I found some packs still left at a local target and bought them all and pulled a Daniel Norris mini orange. However just wondering on the Bryant’s, etc as the prices have skyrocketed! I was paying $14 now people are asking $100. But I feel the #d blue borders would be less produced as they state the run but could be wrong. And the pack states 1:87 packs!

Really wish I had been lucky enough to pull his auto for my collection cause I’m not spending thousands especially when all the redemptions were refractors of him making it the most heavily produced card of them all! Sad..just sad!

I like this set, completed both base set and BP’s. I like the design of the card and the pictures are well done.
What is missing for me is the content. I felt that the base set could better fill in the missing roster in the Topps set. There are lots of players that were a part of the prospects list in Bowman in the 2013 year and are now starters, but didn’t make either the base Bowman, or Topps series 1/2. Since Topps doesn’t have a large set filling out a full team roster, I feel they could have used Bowman to better round out this with younger up and coming players. It is not clear to me that this is what the average collector wants, but for me when watching games, my son and I try to put together teams while we watch, switching players from teams as they are traded. But with so many duplicates of perceived stars and prospects in the Topps and Bowman sets, rather than actual roster players, this is now only a 70% solution, where I believe in the past it would have had 95% of the players just in the 792 card Topps set.

The other day I pulled a Trevor Gretzky PA-TG Green Auto numbered 59/100. I didn’t see a Green set mentioned on your list so I just wanted to mention they exist. Was from a Retail Blaster box from Target.

My first time buying Bowman products and I love them! I think they look nice and I enjoy the prospect cards.. I enjoy the variety of parallels and the look of the cards! Buying the 3-pack package with 3 purple base parallels cards from Target are a good investment! I have pulled 4 Case-hits! Auto Mark Appel #/35 – auto #/10 – mini #/250 – die-cut #/99 Jose Abreu.. All in a months period.. Along with 14 other parallel cards and 10 State and Hometown.

I just wanted to know if you are aware of the “no-name” error cards that have been coming out lately. Because you seem to have either overlooked them or perhaps weren’t informed of them being inserted in to packs. I’m always on the lookout for Oswaldo Arcia cards and have come across both a 2014 Topps and a 2014 Bowman card of him with no name. And there were other cards of different players that I’ve come across on eBay that didn’t have their name on as well. Do you know anything about them?

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Ron These are printing errors and not official variations in the insert sense. I suspect this happens when sheets get stuck together or something else goes wrong with a sheet during the printing process.

Picked up my first bowman hobby box. The box guaranteed a chrome autograph but I didn’t get one. I really didn’t get much of anything. Best card pulled was a paper parallel numbered to 500. I was a little hesitant buying the box when the only guarantee was the 1 autograph. Since I didn’t even get that, its hard to endorse this product.

Isaac
Isaac

How hard is it to find the retail orange and green wave packs? Like what are the odds per pack?

Fat Pappy
Fat Pappy

4 Stars.
I usually love Bowman to pieces, but this year I am not happy with the Retail blaster boxes as I have been in the past. Way more cards are Hobby only this year!! That a bit of bull. I don’t always have big $ to spend on Hobby boxes and am more comfortable purchasing the less expensive blaster boxes and hanger packs. Not having Auto RC’s and some of the lower numbered Parallel cards kind of irks me a little. I would have given 5 stars if not for this. Seems to run the same this year with many of their products. Minimal short print stuff in the blaster boxes throughout so far in 2014!! Peeved in Sarasota.

Bowman continues to be my favorite to collect. I’ve had a lot of nice pulls over the last 3+ years.

I understand that, but Brinson was drafted (and signed) in 2012. Just a case of the cards not being ready/available until now possibly? Sorry, just trying to wrap my head around this. Thanks!

Question: any explanation why a card copyrighted in 2011 (i.e. Lewis Brinson Under Armour auto) is in the 2014 product instead of the 2011 product? Any explanation would be great. Thanks!

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Judson Those cards are signed at the event. Some are given to players at the event (not serial numbered) while Topps sets them aside until they’re drafted and can include in a product.

Ryan:

Here’s EXACTLY what my brother found, in some of his Target value packs. We’re still wondering how scarce/valuable these retail wave refractors are: http://www.blowoutcards.com/forums/baseball-box-breaks/706210-look-what-i-found-some-orange-y-14-bowman-retail.html

Ryan Cracknell

Todd H. Topps hasn’t released print run info on them. Completed eBay auctions are the easiest way to check values.

Todd H.
Todd H.

P.P.S. My brother just sent me a photo of them, and they are definitely orange wave refractors, but they are numbered as “BCPXX Refractors” We are interested in how scarce and rare these are. Thanks!

Todd H.
Todd H.

P.S. Are the orange wave parallels in retail equivalent to the silver ice parallels insofar as they are not designated as #/XX on the back (i.e., they do not have a limited number designator on the card back)? If this is so, is there any indication how scarce or valuable they are? He’s been getting some value packs with 4 or 5 of them in a row, in one of the packs.

Todd H.
Todd H.

Ryan: Just got a text back from my brother, who says they are numbered as “BCPXX Refractor” on the card backs. Strange. What have you heard about these? He’s wondering how scarce they are, as they are refractors and say so on the back, but he’s getting lots of them in the value packs from Target, in Minnesota.

Todd H.
Todd H.

My brother just cracked his fourth(!) hot pack with 5 orange refractors, from those value packs at Target with purple card mini packs.

Ryan, have you heard of this elsewhere?

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Todd H. Sounds like the Orange Wave parallels. They’re randomly inserted in retail packs.

I cracked a jumbo box and found a Josh Donaldson Blue border card missing the name and team logo. There is an indentation in which you can read the name at an angle in the right light. But the gold overlay is missing. Any news on that?

Joshua Printing error.

Fantastic as always! Best product out there in my opinion.

Picked up a Jumbo box, which guarantees 3 autos. Only pulled 2 autos, a base auto of Chris Bostick and a base auto of Kyle Parker. What?! Serious Topps? I scoured all the cards one by one to check, sure enough, no other auto (checked the backs of the cards too since the back of the box mentions some sort of “signed on back” cards). Thanks, Topps, for ripping off a good customer. Wish I had recorded my break for proof. I’ll try writing Topps, but I doubt they’ll even respond.

Best other card pulled was a Jorge Alfaro Top-100 die-cut refractor #/99. Only 3 other serial #’d cards in the whole jumbo box.

About 10 of the chrome cards had north/south scratch streaks on them (luckily not the autos). The Abreu chrome I pulled is quite noticeably off-center, left. In fact, the vast majority of the chrome cards are surprisingly off-center, left.

Don’t waste your money. It’s the worst lot I’ve seen in years.

How many Lucky Redemptions are there of each number? I see multiple of the same number on eBay.

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Riley Fernholz I don’t believe print runs on those were released. They’re definitely not 1/1 though.

I pulled a 5 card orange wave refractor pack from a pack of retail cards. Has anyone else found these? I haven’t seen anything written up about them being in the release.

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Chris Y They were a surprise addition and are only in retail packs.

on the no name card is it # or base card?

These always look so boring. Bought 4 jumbo packs at my LCS and did okay. Wil Meyers Red Ice #/25, Ryan Zimmerman Silver Bordered #/75, Josh Hader Black Collection Auto Redemption #/25 & a Wil Meyers 89 Bowman Is Back Silver Diamond Refractor. Really disappointed that all the Kris Bryant Autos I’ve seen are redemptions. (Meaning years before they would arrive.) This product just does not inspire me to buy boxes.

bowman isn’t really my thing but I got ten packs today because why the hell not? I like the design but the parallels have gotten way out of control. this coupled with what I would call basically three base sets make it very confusing. trying to manufacture rarity by making endless parallel colors is going to bite back eventually.

Chris Y
Chris Y

I got a Jumbo today, I pulled blue ref auto /150, 2 base auto’s, and also had a black wave ref pack that had a white ice /25 and a auto /50, also a BTP Ref /99. pretty sweet to pull 4 auto’s 2 colored.

Dan
Dan

Nice product, bought a case of jumbo. I received a pack with 5 blue un-numbered chrome refractors. Can somebody tell me should they be #’d. Couldn’t find any info. I’m giving this rating because my lowest parallel was 25, and auto was 50. No case hit!

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Dan It sounds like the Blue Refractors are the Blue Wave cards. Do they have a textured look to them. If so, that’s what they are and they’re not numbered.

Ed
Ed

Looks like the Kris Bryant base autos are very short printed – more color autos listed than regular base autos.
No refractor autos #/500 either.

Chris Y

Thanks Ryan. Just got done cracking 3 hobby boxes, wanted a jumbo none in stock yet, pulled an Abreu Chrome Ref Auto #/500 (they seem to be going for nice money on ebay),2 chrome auto’s, 9 #’d parallels. 3 color ref. mini’s, 2 color ref. and 1 chrome ref. Overall very pleased with the product this year.

Are they doing the wrapper redemption packs again? I went yesterday and got 3 blaster boxes. pulled 2 auto’s 1 was /#500,an Abreu bcp ,Taveres 89BIB. overall the cards look very nice. Im headed to the hobby shop for some jumbo’s today. Good luck chromies.

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Chris Y Nothing has been announced and there have been no other Topps wrapper redemptions this year. The Wave cards used in the past are in packs. So I’m guessing no wrapper redemption.

im starting to get into the prospect side of collecting..but i am not going crazy over a product that puts high school kids so high on a pedistool….i dont believe it’s good for the player himself to know a card he signed is selling for hundreds of dollars.IT can have an adverse outcome on thier development…keep the signing limited to established prospects…the product always looks great with the chrome and color and the wave inserts..it doesnt need so many autos to be a fun inexpensive product..

Alex Shields

The base cards show an autographed red ice /25? Are the base like Jeter going to have cracked ice autos?

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Alex Shields The checklist for the Autographed Ice cards can be seen above. It is not a base parallel.

What about orange wave autos?

Jason

Thanks for the response Ryan. It is great that you not only provide such great information about these products in your articles but it is greatly appreciated that you read and respond to our questions as well.
Thanks for making our hobby even more enjoyable!

Montgomery
Montgomery

Will Tanaka have non-auto chrome cards at least(for possibility of reds, oranges etc?)

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Montgomery He’s not in the prospect portion of the set so it looks like his first Chrome cards will likely be in Bowman Chrome.

Jason
Jason

Will there be a Tanaka auto? I didn’t see it on the checklist. Most likely a redemption??

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Jason No Tanaka autographs. He hasn’t signed an autograph deal with any company since joining the Yankees and rumor is he’s reluctant to.

Is there going to be a base set of the ’89 oversized or just ice, auto, and ice auto?

Jason
Jason

Bowman is always my favorite release each year.

Ryan, I’ve got some Jumbo boxes coming. Your article says hobby boxes have randomly inserted Blue Wave Refractor and Black Wave Refractor Hot Packs. Does that mean Jumbo won’t have them or does anything Hobby has Jumbo will have too?

Thanks a lot!
Jason

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Jason Not sure if jumbos have them or not. The info we received focused primarily on hobby with brief mentions of jumbo.

Shawn
Shawn

Same old boring Bowman design as usual. They know that prospectors will buy it regardless of what it looks like so why bother trying to make it look nice, right?

Erik
Erik

I assume the autos will be on bowman chrome cards? Sorry if it’s a dumb question, I am still new to collecting?

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Erik The vast majority will be. There are a few other inserts that are pretty tough to find as well.

Tons of Autos from what I hear. Any idea when the entire checklist will be coming out? Do you know of Julio Urias will have Chrome Auto coming out on these and not just the black?

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Johnny Checklist is likely months away — normally not until a couple of weeks before it releases, at the earliest.

Dan Rosenfield
Dan Rosenfield

I gave it 4 stars only because it answered my question of whether Kris Bryant was going to be in 2013 Bowman Draft. Which was no. But overall, I look forward to cracking boxes and sorting through the massive number of parallels for each card.

Bob Patterson
Bob Patterson

Hey Ryan, did I miss something here? How many autos in the Jumbo boxes? Three? I can’t find it in the article. Thanks, Bob

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Bob Patterson The solicitation didn’t say so I didn’t put anything just yet as I’d rather not give wrong info. If I had to guess, though, it’d be the same as past years.
