What's old is new again in 1999 Topps Star Wars Chrome Archives trading cards. The first Star Wars set to use the Topps Chrome name, it reprints cards from the original trilogy in chromium. Combine that with a couple of interesting insert sets and you've got a simple, more high-end take on Star Wars cards.
The 1999 Topps Star Wars Chrome Archives base set has 90 cards. They take cards from the original 1977 Topps Star Wars, 1980 Topps Empire Strikes Back and 1983 Topps Return of the Jedi sets and are redone with Topps Chrome technology. Images are also redone, making them look sharper than before. All this is done on thick card stock compared to the original sets. Each film has 30 cards on the checklist.
Strangely, 1999 Topps Star Wars Chrome Archives doesn't have any Refractor parallels, a staple for the Chrome brand since its earliest days in sports. However, there are two other inset sets. Clearzone (four cards, 1:18 packs) offers a new spin on character-focused cards using see-through plastic stock. Double-Sided Chrome cards (nine cards, 1:12 packs) use the classic sticker designs on one side and pairs them with the appropriate film's poster on the back.
