Buffalo Bills Collecting and Fan Guide 1Although they were one of the best teams in NFL during the late-80s and early-90s, the Buffalo Bills will always be remembered for their Super Bowl defeats. Despite never achieving the ultimate NFL goal, the history of the franchise is filled with elite collecting options and the team has currently reloaded with several young stars that are emerging as viable hobby options.

The Buffalo Bills were established in 1960 as a charter member of the AFL and made the jump to the NFL in 1970 during the AFL-NFL merger. Outside of a short run in the mid-1960s, the Bills did not experience much team success in their first few decades. Collectors from this period were still in luck, however, thanks to names like Jack Kemp and O.J. Simpson.

Things began to trend up when Chuck Knox was hired as the head coach in 1978. His tenure was not that long, but in addition to leading the team to a few playoff appearances, Knox was responsible for drafting Jim Kelly in 1983. Although he decided to play for the USFL, once the league folded, Kelly joined the Bills. In Knox's final season as coach, Buffalo drafted Bruce Smith and Andre Reed. When Knox left for Seattle, the Bills hired Marv Levy. The last piece was Thurman Thomas.

Under Levy, the team made the playoffs each year from 1988 to 1993. In addition to regularly winning the AFC East, the Bills remain the only team to ever appear in four consecutive Super Bowls. History will remember the four straight losses from 1991 to 1994. Although three were sound defeats, the one that stings the most is the loss in 1991 to the Giants where the Bills' kicker missed the winning field goal near the end of the game.

This marked the high point for the Buffalo Bills and the team was largely disbanded by the end of the decade. Since then, the Bills have very little success to speak of and have not made the playoffs at all in the new millennium.  Despite persistent rumors that the team would be purchased and moved, the new owners have confirmed the team will remain in Buffalo. Although the transformation back into a winning franchise has not yet materialized, the Bills have added talented players in the draft, including C.J. Spiller, E.J. Manuel and Sammy Watkins.
