Overview
Deron Williams has proven to be one of the top guards in the league, running the point for a Brooklyn Nets team that is stacked with veteran talent. Values for his cards and memorabilia have softened, as of late. But with one deep run into the playoffs, Deron Williams cards will be back in the spotlight.
Deron Williams left the University of Illinois after his Junior season and was selected third overall by the Utah Jazz. Fellow point guard, Chris Paul, was taken with the very next pick, going fourth overfall to the New Orleans Hornets. The two young players would forever be compared and, for now, Paul leads Williams in accolades and reputation by a decent margin. Although he saw individual and team success with the Jazz, eventually the relationship soured. Williams forced his way out of Utah, but not before longtime coach, Jerry Sloan, resigned. The team traded the disgruntled Williams to the New Jersey Nets during the second half of the 2010-11 season.
The Nets made their move to Brooklyn for the start of the 2012-13 season and have surrounded Deron Williams with big name players like Joe Johnson, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. Expectations are high for this team, especially given the small window of time left for several of the veteran players. The three-time All-Star will be called upon to bring the team together, and the team's success or failure will be largely fall on him.
Deron Williams has nearly 30 official rookie cards that run from the dollar bin to extremely high-end. His top rookie cards are all autographed cards, but one is the clear favorite.
Top Deron Williams Cards
2005-06 Upper Deck Exquisite Deron Williams RC #45 Autographed Patch #/99
The cream of the crop, Exquisite reigns supreme again in 2005-06. This Deron Williams card is limited to only 99 copies and includes an on-card autograph and jersey patch.
2005-06 Ultimate Collection Deron Williams RC #145 Autograph #/250
Although the design is a little busy, Ultimate Collection is a great option for collectors who can't or won't fork over the money for an Exquisite Deron Williams rookie card. The hardwood background evokes the image of a court and the large singing area makes for a great on card-autograph. A mid-level print run keeps values from going crazy and a Gold parallel (#/25) adds more options for collectors.
2005-06 Fleer Greats of the Game Deron Williams RC #119 Autograph #/99
This is a great value option for collectors. Nothing from the time period can compete with Exquisite, but Fleer Great of the Game comes close with an on-card autograph and limited print run of 99. Checking in at about a tenth of the price, Greats of the Game is a strong option for Deron Williams card collectors. There is also a Gold parallel that is numbered to 25.
