Hottest Yasiel Puig Baseball Cards

Hottest Yasiel Puig Baseball Cards

Yasiel Puig has become the sensation of the 2013 baseball season. When the season kicked off, he wasn't on very many radars, at least not prominently. He raised some eyebrows when the Dodgers called him up. Within a few days, the drama surrounding Yasiel Puig had made him a phenom. And it hasn't let up. Now people are watching his every hit, home run and crash into the outfield with much scrutiny and excitement. Needless to say, Yasiel Puig baseball cards are hot.

What's made the situation even more exciting from a hobby perspective is that when Puig began his tear, he didn't have many cards -- at least with him in a MLB uniform. This is a rare thing in today's hobby as most players have several Bowman cards, in addition to other prospect cards, by the time they reach the big leagues.

In 2012, Leaf was the only company to get cards of the prospect into their products. These include Yasiel Puig autographs in 2012 Leaf Memories, 2012 Leaf Valiant, 2012 Leaf Metal Draft and 2012 Leaf Ultimate Draft. Topps did get Puig in 2013 Bowman Baseball, but as inserts and a mystery autograph redemption that was announced after his debut. Starting with 2013 Bowman Inception, all Topps releases for the rest of the season have Yasiel Puig baseball cards in some form or another. This includes autographs. Panini has also confirmed that the outfielder will be in 2013 Pinnacle and 2013 Panini Prizm.

I’ve noticed his cards have surged just a little this week. If this kid keeps hitting the cover off of the ball will his cards raise in value? My 11 year old dragged me kicking and screaming back into a hobby I swore off 30 years ago. It is certainly more fun to collect now that we have limitless options and varieties, instant info at our disposal, and interesting writers like Ryan.

Opened my first box of 2013 Triple threads yesterday. I was amazed to find a 1/3 significant statistic auto relic (THE BULL) of Yasiel Puig card number TTAR-YP1. My first and best pull of the new year.

Thomas Feeney » Congrats!

Hi Ryan,

You mentioned that “all Topps releases for the rest of the season have Yasiel Puig baseball cards in some form or another.”

Have you seen anything about 2013 Triple Threads inclusion? I haven’t seen anything yet for that release…

Thanks,
Kgsportscards

kgsportscards » Topps said that he’d be in all sets going forward. Triple Threads is still a way’s out. It’s likely that’s it’s still be put together.

Yes…. Trout would be a better comparison.

Ryan, what do you see sales of Puig’s “Stuff” do when and if he goes into a slump? This kind of reminds me of the Jason Heyward rush coming from a Braves fan… Puig just a bit faster. I’m just curious to see what happens when he goes into a slump. Personally I like him… but I think he is a little impatient at times. I suppose we all would be if we had his talent and opportunity though. Please sign up on my website at GibsonSportsMemorabilia.com. I’m just a 30 year old country boy doing what I love. Take care and I look forward to hearing from ya buddy.

Josh Gibson » Puig stuff will slow down and drop — at some point. Part of the excitement right now is the overall limited availability of his cards. With each new release, there will be more. However, if he continues to play close to the same level, prices will continue to rise before leveling off. It’s very similar to Mike Trout last year and Strasburg in 2010.

Ryan do you think with all the redemptions,
that Topps will not get them all redeemed ?

Lee C. » The redemptions are likely because they were rushing to get him into products ASAP. A similar thing happened last year with Yu Darvish. By the end of the season, most of his cards were in packs. I would like to think that redemptions are in place for signatures they’ve received a commitment for. As for a timeframe, that’d be something that only Topps and Puig would know.
