User Rating:

After a couple of years as a football-only brand, Inception is coming to the diamond. 2013 Bowman Inception Baseball sees the same intense style and focus on autographs from young prospects and rookies. Every box has four autographs and one autographed relic.

Both Prospect Autographs and Rookie Autographs have highly detailed images. They come with a total of eight different parallels, including Gold (#/99), Blue (#/75), Orange (#/50), Green (#/25), Red (#/10), and Purple (#/5). Inception and Framed Printing Plates are one-of-ones. Prospects also have Inscription parallels numbered to 10.

Numbered to 25, Silver Signings gives collectors a black background that is used for a silver signature. Gold Ink versions are limited to 5 numbered copies.

Focusing on baseball's farm systems, Dual Rise Autographs (#/25) pair rookie and prospect autographs from the same franchise. Triple Signatures are numbered to 5.

Autographed relics come with basic swatches, patches and jumbo pieces. Basic Autographed Relics have three parallels: Red (#/50), Blue (#/25) and Inception (1/1). Autographed Patches and Autographed Jumbo Relics come with similar parallel tiers, each numbered to 10 or less.

Focusing on a player's climb through the ranks of the minors through to the majors, Ascension Collection Auto Relics (#/25) have three jersey pieces and a sticker autograph. Each of the three jersey pieces come from different development levels. Patch parallels are one-of-ones.

2013 Bowman Inception Baseball also has some high-end autographed relics. One-of-one Autographed Logo Patch cards combine the MLB logo from the back of a player's collar with an autographed sticker. Triple Autograph Patch cards (#/5) have sticker autographs and patch swatches from three players.

The release sees the continuation of a pair of programs that will be featured throughout 2013 in Bowman products. These include 22 more Bowman Black Autographs (#/25) and 10 Blue Sapphire Refractors highlighting the best players from the brand's 65-year history.

Over-sized Little League Autographs (#/20) do not feature grade-school scribbles from random kids. Rather, they highlight current players using images from when they played Little League or high school.

Continuing with a trend of offering unique experiences, 2013 Bowman Inception Baseball has an essay contest where the winner will get to participate in the first round of the Home Run Derby at the 2013 Under Armour All-American Game at Wrigley Field.

2013 Bowman Inception Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Jeremy Sebastian

Good: On-card autographs. Great design. Every card is a hit.

Bad: No veteran players. Lots of redemptions.

The Bottom Line: 2013 Bowman Inception Baseball is a "go big or go home" release in the truest sense. This product mainly caters to autograph and hit collectors who are less interested in basic inserts or base cards. Bowman Inception is interesting because virtually every card in the set is of either a prospect or a young star.

Staff Rating:
4.4 / 5.0

Card Design: 5.0/5.0

Bowman Inception features a strong card design. The cards have a really crisp look to them and have ample space for autographs, with a nice fade touch to make the on-card autographs jump out at you. The design uses a cloudy sky background which really works well with this release when you add in the filter Bowman uses on the players. The overall look really makes the players the focal point of each card. As an added feature, the set includes many color parallel versions. Also, the base autograph Inscriptions parallel (#/10) is a terrific addition. Most of the autographs are on-card, which adds to the design.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

Heavy on youth, the checklist is great if you are looking for prospects or young stars. It has pretty much every rising star or potential great, from Byron Buxton to Yasiel Puig to Manny Machado and Bryce Harper. Obviously, if you're looking for established stars like Miguel Cabrera or Albert Pujols, you won't find them in this release. Because Bowman Inception offers a variety of different autographed subsets, a lot of the same prospects are used over and over again in the different subsets simply because there are only so many players you can pick from when doing a prospect-only release. Whether that's a good or bad thing lies solely with the collector opening the box. I personally think it's a good thing because instead of only having one subset with a Yasiel Puig autograph, for example, you now have four or five. And that just means you have a better chance of pulling an autograph of a particular player.

Value: 4.5/5.0

Baseball, more so than any other sport, has always been fueled by prospects. Therefore, having a high-end release catered to those hot prospects gives collectors a release that will have value right out of the box, as well as a few years down the road. The release is loaded with popular prospects, and quite a few stars that are already making a huge impact for their MLB teams. True value is always tough to judge when it comes to products that deal primarily with prospects. Most of the initial value is based on potential, and years may pass before the true value is established.

The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0

Bowman Inception is a fun product because it is all hits. Few collectors will complain about that. But when spending $100+ on a box of cards, I personally want that experience to last longer than a few seconds. With each box only having one pack and five cards per pack, you'll undoubtedly spend much more time staring at your pulls than actually opening the packs. However, this is not a new concept in the collecting world and many products operate with this same basic format. As long as you know what you are getting into, the fun is definitely there. One thing that takes away from the potential fun is the abundance of redemptions in this product. I know you can't expect Bowman to get every card signed in time for the release, but there are a ton of redemptions in this set, which can put a damper on the excitement.

Why isn’t Aaron Judge on this checklist? I know they did included him in the set. Its so hard to find his card in this set even thou it was made.

Judge was not in 2013 Inception. He is found in 2014 Inception and after.

WHERE ARE MY REDEMPTION AUTOGRAPHS FROM INCEPTION BASEBALL???

I entered (9) Inception Baseball autograph Redemptions Online right after the product was released.
It’s now over a YEAR later and I’ve not received more than one of the redemptions I am owed!
I’m waiting on (4) COREY SEAGER Autograph Redemptions which could be worth nothing by the time Topps sends these out.
I know I’m the ONLY one in this hobby who buys cards like this so that I can trade them (once received) for items I need so that I can make my yearly 30,000+ card & autograph donation to hospitalized children. I’ve done this EVERY YEAR since 1989.
This was a great product, but like almost every other Topps product since 2012, the redemptions dragged the product down in the dirt!
Since 2012, Topps’ Customer Service has been USELESS! You’ll hold for 30+ minutes if you call (then you are LUCKY if you ever get a human- and their humans LIE to you too!), & they don’t answer e-mails anymore (YET THEIR WEBSITE STILL PROMOTES THAT AS A WAY OF CONTACTING THEM???).

Once Customer Service is useless, what usually happens to the company? Just refer to the past companies that have followed this path: Signature Rookies, Score Board, Pinnacle, Upper Deck, Donruss/Playoff. NEED I SAY MORE?

Just got back into collecting after almost 20 yr hiatus..started with the light stuff..topps, bowman, then i moved onto platinum, and now? What have i gotten myself into?! What started as an innocent chase of puig-sanity i am now at my hobby shop every single day for the past 3 months and moved on to the hard stuff: inception. I pulled the trigger on the $120 box assuming i would at least come close to recovering my investment if i were to sell on ebay but it appears to make 1/3 back would be lucky. Of 2 boxes i pulled slade heathcott auto relic (i think thats what it is) and a soler auto are the only 2 i can remember worth speaking. Pretty weak in my opinion, i think for a buck twenty, you should at least be guaranteed 1 valuable card. But will i stop? No. After i got my fix at the hobby shop i normally move onto kmart target or models for a few blasters to support my habit. I truly have a problem $150-$200+ everyday! I tell my wife they only cost a couple bucks cause what does she know so she thinks its a great hobby. Best of luck to my fellow feinds. “May we all hit the puig autos we so desire”.

Another product with a design that will appeal to some while turning others away, Inception is a beautiful and well-rounded product IMO.

I love the “artsy” nature of the player images, the renderings are a welcome departure from traditional on-field photography, and autos & auto/mem’ issues from baby-faced prodigies such as Correa, Almora, Buxton, Rendon, Russell Hanson, Polanco and Fried, amongst others, are all the more impressive when paired with ‘graphs from more experienced youngsters such as Machado, Bundy, Myers, Taveras, Springer & Taijuan Walker.
The real chase, however, is for Yasiel Puig’s sig’…& that has taken box prices to “seriously!?!” Dollar figures. My LHS was selling Inception for $110 upon release…and that price is now a fond memory with boxes selling for $125-$130 ($130 is the pre-lunch price).
My last observation echoes a previous post; as well-executed as the product is… Bowman Chrome pricing is a multiple higher. As an example, I snared a Xander Bogaerts Chrome auto RC for $75 (now closing around $110/120) 3 months or so ago. I just grabbed an Inception Bogaerts auto jersey issue for a very reasonable $25.
The room for investment growth within Inception exists… but it seems that such growth is limited to just a few prospects whose autos have yet to really hit the secondary market.

GQ have 2 autos and 2 memorablias for less money, more fun and more time to break and enjoy without those sticker auto. Ok, that’s not the same card quality or thickness on GQ. I buy 2 group break on this product, I pulled Giolito, Rendon and Profar auto for 90$. Ordinary.

Got a Buxton base auto and a Wil Myers Patch auto 5/5 … Not bad for a 100 box

Bryan
Bryan

Great checklist, but aside from a few it looks like values are 20-40% lower than Bowman Chrome autos. not great investment set. card design is ok i guess.

I bought a box of these cards and opened them up two days ago. I got a nice box with 5 autos including a Byron Buxton #/75 which I’m pretty happy about. I am concerned however as EACH card has the same imprint from printing. Has anyone else had this problem? I wouldn’t think they are supposed to look like this but I can’t find another such incident reported on the web.

I Like the border they put on the printing plates….2011 supreme did it ,then stopped in 2012…everyone should border the printing plates

How is it that these cards are on ebay
before the release date?

thebig cdog
thebig cdog

no one seems to know if the prospects and rookies also have a “base” card autograph or if they start at /99 copies and go from there. Does anyone here know? The problem may lie where you only find very minimal cards of the hot players and a ton of the lower end guys. I guess this is the way football ended up. I personally can’t wait for this stuff and I’m kicking myself for not getting in when it was $650 or so a case.

thebig cdog » We normally have to gather print run info once the product is released for short prints and the like. So we won’t know until next week once it hits.

Actually the finished checklist sounds pretty decent. Looking forward to seeing it. I have the Nationals and Rays in a case break

I wonder if the Puig will be a redemption?
And it seems to have a lot of sticker autos
will have to down grade from a 5 star to
a 4 star.

One other thing, You would think they would perfect the making of the football cards with all the chipping and stuff, before making another set of them.

Yet another 1 pack low number cards per box set. Cheaper for companies to make and easy to charge high and steal your money.

I know what I am saving my money for this year. This Product will be Hot !
