2020 Topps Update Baseball Variations Gallery and Checklist
Even in a wild and unpredictable MLB season, collectors can always count on the 2020 Topps Update Baseball variations to provide short-printed photos for multiple players.
The guide below removes the guesswork for the many flagship SP/SSP choices to be found.
2020 Topps Update Baseball Variation Odds / Set Details
Keeping to tradition, Topps did not disclose the variations on the final 2020 Topps Update Series Baseball checklist, leaving collectors to piece things together on their own. However, this guide aims to provide all relevant details so there is no confusion.
While the short-printed cards should be in all formats—which can be verified by checking the pack or box odds—the official Hobby odds are noted below.
- SP - 1:63 packs
- SSP - 1:1,252 packs
- SSSP - Unknown
- SP - 1:20 packs
- SSP - 1:382 packs
- SSSP - Unknown
Going strictly by the posted odds, the SP/SSP cards are roughly twice as tough to pull compared to 2019 Update Series MLB.
Both Series 1 and Series 2 have an even more rare group of variations now referred to as SSSP. These are not listed with the pack odds but the cards have a different code compared to the SP and SSP. The same extra-limited tier applies to Update Series, as well. The SSSP theme appears to be former players in executive or ownership roles.
As has been the case for each flagship set in 2020, there are again Advanced Stat cards (#/300) for the base set. These are considered parallels, not variations.
2020 Topps Update Baseball Variation Codes
While the image is what makes it a variation, the CMP code on the back is a tried-and-true cheat to confirm a variation, even if that is not the intended purpose. Compare the final three digits of the long number under the stats (circled in red in the image below) and you should be able to clearly and easily determine what you have pulled.
- Base end in #588
- SP Variations end in #631
- SSP Variations end in #632
- SSSP Variations end in #633
- Advanced Stat Parallels end #634
Numbered to 300 copies for the base set, the Advanced Stat parallel is not part of the image variations. The only difference is the statistics listing on the back.

2020 Topps update., at first I thought they were the royal blue cards from Walmart, but these cards are black. I know it shows black on the list but none of these are numbered.
