2020 Topps Series 1 Baseball Variations Checklist & Gallery
It may be a new decade of flagship MLB cards, but the variation nation lives on. The 2020 Topps Series 1 Baseball variations offer collectors secondary images for top players along with appearances from retired legends who aren't part of the primary base set.
While image variations have become common across many of the Topps releases, flagship remains one of the more popular and easiest places to find the short-printed photos.
2020 Topps Series 1 Baseball Variation Set Details
At this point, the variations are nothing close to a secret. However, Topps still builds the suspense by leaving them off the 2020 Topps Series 1 Baseball checklist. Therefore, the only real question is which players are included for round one. And that's where this guide comes in.
Like in previous releases, the 2020 Topps Series 1 variation cards include easier Short Print (SP) and much tougher Super Short Print (SSP) editions.
Based on early reports, the Gerrit Cole short print is technically not part of the main SP set as it falls a bit more often at around one per case.
It also seems there is an even more limited tier of short prints this time.
2020 Topps Series 1 Baseball Variation Pack Odds
As there are quite a few Retail formats in addition to Hobby and HTA Jumbo boxes, some might wonder where the variations can be pulled. Based on what we have seen, all formats contain SP and SSP cards. When in doubt, check the odds on the pack or box. For Jumbo, SP cards average 1:13 packs and SSP cards fall 1:387 packs. Hobby packs average 1:43 packs for SP and 1:1,272 packs for SSP.
In Retail Hangers, it's SP at 1:9 packs and SSP at 1:267 packs. It is not quite as easy with Retail Value Blasters that average 1:43 packs for SP cards, and 1:1,274 packs for SSP cards.
The odds for the rarest cards, including the Polar Bear Pete Alonso, Reverse Image Mike Trout and the photoshopped Babe Ruth/Aaron Judge cards, are not known.
2020 Topps Series 1 Baseball Variation Codes
Giving collectors another way to identify the variations, the trusty CMP code on the back is not intended to be used in this manner, but it still shines a light on the variations via the number differences.
- Base Cards end #269
- Advanced Stat Parallels end #283
- SP Variations end #284
- SSP Variations end #285
- SSSP?? Variations end #578
We have also seen where some of the rarest images have a code that ends in #78. Based on how few have surfaced, it appears these are Super Super Short Prints. We reached out to Topps and will update this guide if we hear anything else.
2020 Topps Series 1 Baseball Advanced Stat Parallels
As in past years, there are the Advanced Stat editions that change the stats on the back. These cards are each numbered to 300 copies. Because they apply to the entire base set, they are viewed as a parallel. You will notice sabermetric statistics instead of the basic stats normally provided.

The SSSP images? Are you kidding me. People who pay a premium for these are suckers.
Why does MLB award exclusive rights to these guys? They do some horrible things.
