User Rating:

2015 Bowman Chrome Baseball continues from where 2015 Bowman Baseball left off, delving into more prospects, autographs and Refractors. Like last year, hobby boxes come with a pair of signed cards rather than the one usually found in regular Bowman and Draft.

The base set has 200 rookie and veteran players done on chromium card stock. Numbered parallels include Refractors, Purple Refractors, Blue Refractors, Green Refractors, Gold Refractors, hobby-only Orange Refractors (#/25), Red Refractors (#/5) and Superfractors (1/1).

Complimenting the base set are 100 Prospects inserts of prospects and international standouts who weren't in 2015 Bowman. Both these and the Chrome Prospect Autographs come with several Refractor parallels. The colors are similar to those from the base set. Randomly inserted hot packs come with exclusive Wave Refractors parallels. Chrome Prospect Autographs come with on-card signatures.

Rookie Autographs are also hard-signed. These come from players who have already made their MLB debuts. And, yes, these have Refractors as well.

New Prime Position Autographs offer signatures from a top prospect at each position. They're signed on-card and have several numbered Refractor parallel versions.

Other signed cards in 2015 Bowman Chrome Baseball include Dual Autographs (#/25), Bowman Black Autographs and more cards from high school events like the Perfect Game Classic.

Although the Superfractor has become a hobby benchmark for one-of-a-kind cards, they're still relatively new. Superfractors That Never Were recreate past Bowman cards of current and retired players as both regular and autographed one-of-one Superfractors.

Series Next Die-Cuts is a new basic insert that spotlights MLB's youth movement. These get new parallel patterns called Haze Refractors, Vapor Refractors (#/25) and Torrent Refractors (#/5). There are also Superfractors (1/1) and Autograph versions.

Prospect Profiles Minis bring a shrunken element to 2015 Bowman Chrome Baseball. In addition to basic versions, there are numbered Refractors in the colors Green, Gold, Orange (#/25), Red (#/5) and Superfractor (1/1).

Product Configuration: Hobby - 18 packs per box, 4 cards per pack (2 base, 2 Prospects); Jumbo - 12 pack per box, 13 cards per pack (7 base, 6 Prospects)
Price Point: Low- to Mid-End Baseball Card
Target Audience: Prospectors, Autograph Collectors, Chromies

2015 Bowman Chrome Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Two autographs per box, on-card signatures, Carlos Correa rookie cards.

Bad: Very little to set it apart, weak autograph checklist, limited color by the box.

The Bottom Line: Basically an update to 2015 Bowman, the draw here is not quite as strong for prospect collectors as most of the top names have already been covered in prior products and the recent draft picks are not present. That makes it more reliant on the rookies, which is fine, but there are plenty of other options that do the same thing and also offer bigger hit opportunities.

Staff Rating:
2.8 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.25/5.0

The 2015 Bowman base design has a solid look and it looks even better in Chrome. Like most Chrome-based products, since it simply takes a prior set and adds chromium, most collectors have already made up their minds about the design. Having said that, Chrome is synonymous with Refractors. I expected more color and better variety in the Refractor options and it seemed very subdued.

2014 Bowman Chrome gave us a few different inserts, like Fire Die-Cuts, that felt fresh. In 2015, there is really nothing of note in the boxes outside of the on-card autographs. Limited to one regular insert, one die-cut insert and one mini insert, the overall designs comes across as very generic.

I will say that the Superfractors That Never Were is a cool idea. But since 99.999999999% of collectors will never get close to pulling one, it is hard to treat that as an actual selling point.

Checklist: 2.0/5.0

The 2015 Bowman Chrome Baseball base set catches up on the rookie names, so options like Correa, Buxton, Gallo and Kang are available in addition to Kris Bryant. Still, without the rookies that are apparently being saved for 2016, it feels like the gaps are even larger.

As far as the prospects, that has always been something that takes time. Because of when the release falls in the year, the opportunities for the first options for the bigger names are slim. It is worth noting that collectors can find the 2014 prospect autograph for Michael Conforto in this release. While not all collectors liked how it was handled, it is a notable card as his first and it is better to find it here than not at all.

The Rookie Autographs are another big element where the checklist factors heavily. Given the base options, most of the top names are covered as autographs in the main rookie set. One big omission is Carlos Correa. Having recently signed him to an exclusive, I would have assumed Topps would have made a big push to get his signed rookies in this product. His autograph is only available in one insert set.

Value: 3.0/5.0

A late-season prospect product that is also geared to rookies (but the late rookie call-ups are not available) is not something that screams value. At around $60-65 a box, prices are not bad and there is always the chance that some obscure prospect blows up, but the Chrome factor is not enough to greatly enhance the value on its own.

On-card autographs always help value, but a big part of that is the checklist. Without many new or surging names, the lack of apparent value makes it a much tougher sell.

Refractors can certainly boost value, but they are just not as common in 2015 Bowman Chrome. Yeah, parallels have jumped the shark in most products, but Chrome products are the one place where collectors expect to find them and I feel it comes up way short.

The Fun Factor: 3.0/5.0

As someone who does not normally delve into the prospect world, the Bowman fun factor is not as great, but I do love some Chrome. For me, I tend to look at the things that make a product unique. On-card autographs are still uncommon enough to stand out. Other than that and the normal allure of Chrome, I just didn’t really find much that caught my attention and that was amplified by the lack of color in a product that is normally associated with it.

There are a lot of good rookie and prospects in this set and the cards have borders on both sides which is a plus . The artwork is a little bit on the plain side but overall they are good looking cards . I have a question for you Trey concerning the sky blue parellel cards in this years set . What form of packaging did the sky blue and the black asia parellel cards come in ? I read through the product information and couldn’t find anything about these 2 specific parellels . I would appreciate it if you could reply and let me know more information about these 2 specific parellel colored cards .
Thanks very much for your time and help .

Neither came in this set. I guess you are meaning 2015 Bowman Draft? https://www.cardboardconnection.com/2015-bowman-draft-baseball-cards

Pulled a 2014 Bowman Draft Conforto Auto from a box of 2015 Bowman Chrome last night. Any idea why?

I pulled autos of the top 2 Picks of the 2015 Draft, the #1 pick of the 2014 Draft and the #14 Pick of the 2015 Draft so this exactly what I expected from a chrome product and loved it!

My point is biased because I got a 1/1 super refractor of Grayson Griener in a $12 pack

I think this is a nice set, but it is not sold at regular stores and in small quantities, so therefore I will likely not be purchasing any. It also, like ervery other Topps set, fails to see that high profile phillies rookies need cards. (For example, last year’s update series included no Giles card, and this year has no Nola card) The lack of a Nola card ruins it for me, but the bowman cards this year are neat, (Especially the chrome paralells) despite their sort of high price.

4 Stars, could be better but isn’t that what Bowman Chrome is supposed to be, just random young guys who may or may not make it? Glad I got a Twitter pack coming in the mail, that’s what’s up, hope I get someone half decent but the long checklist makes me nervous. Lots of those guys have been used and abused by now. I always usually get lucky with colored auto refractors out of my boxes but not so with Bowman Chrome this year, just all base and nobody I really PC but thems the breaks. Last year I killed it with Bowman and Chrome, got a Bryant Base auto and then a Bryant Lucky Redemption Refractor BGS gave a 9.5 w10 auto. This year I got some dudes who can barely sign their name in English. It happens.

It’s a joke that people pay more for the first card, last card, or jersey number but the fact panini or leaf has to have a team logo to make it better is laughable! Most but not all are paying for the player & his autograph! When a player gets traded do you pay more because now he’s on the Cubs instead of the A’s??? I opened one box as I’m not someone willing to waste money on 22 cases to barely get what I want or cross my fingers to get whom I want. The one box probably couldn’t even get me $25! The only people who make money besides topps and grading companies are the case breakers just flipping the stuff! First it was Harper/trout/strasburg now it’s Bryant/Correa/Schwarber! This product barely differentiates itself yr to yr and is porus! When said prospect orange chrome autos are going for $250-$300 for a nobody, you know it’s just a money maker for topps, the graders, breakers, and selling sites! This isn’t a hobby anymore but a dartboard of hoping you get something good! When you check these selling sites & see that your players card is already pulled what’s the point of buying the product to open? It takes the fun out of opening it! What’s sad is the one main site to sell allows big sellers to open many accounts and bid their listings up! For some it’s a hobby still but every time I read these people on here who open tons of cases or even one and complain are a joke! Enjoy it! Don’t think about $$$$$$! Cause that’s the problem it’s all about the $$$$$ than anything to most of you! Not all but most! Sad that this is today’s hobby…

Was excited to crack some cases,, purchased 22 cases and then, first case cracked a Michael De leon SuperFractor Auto, second case, 2 conforto autos and a bryant redemption in same case.. also seems to be alot of auto and base cards with factory scratches.. Never have that issue with Panini…

would have like to see something done about the scratches on the cards … love bowman chrome but this is upsetting..

This will be ok. But thinking Panini will do anything to chrome is kinda out there. Till they actually pay for team logos on the cards, they will never catch chrome. Too many people out there want to see their team logo on the card on rookie cards. If they have a mlb stuff out there with team logos, then I stand corrected.

As has been mentioned above, the absence of a stud vet like Mike Trout, a remarkable rookie in Correa coupled with the 3rd iteration of this product to feature a Kris Bryant prospect / rookie card (he’s had autos the last 3 seasons).. does render the product something of a disappointment. Bowman remains THE home of the prospect, but Topps had best watch the rear-view…. Panini will be coming up fast.

Ernie, what you have are orange wave refractors, not regular orange refractors that are #’d to 25. These are un-numbered, and waves always come like that, in groups of multiple cards. In some cases waves are numbered, just not these particular ones.

Ernie
Ernie

I like the chrome. Better texture. I just openned a hot back of 4 orange refractors. Flipped the card no serial number. Could this be a misprint. Forgot the #25? Anyone else have this type of hot pack. Thanks

Not bad, they do have a trout dual auto. And they do have Schwaber as well. It isn’t to expensive for a box.

Makes about as much sense as hot rookies did last year, but yet it still gets made every year. Also, WTF, you’ve had Sano in every frickin prospect set since 2010, yet, when he actually gets called up and can have real rookie cards, he’s not in it

Mike D
Mike D

How do you NOT have Jose Abreu, Chris Sale and Mike Trout in this set?

Troy Roark

Seriously?! I can count the number of Cardinals cards on a three hands. Pathetic…

Correa is 110 Joe. I had trouble finding him too. Best product of 2015 in my opinion with Bryant and Correa rookie cards in a quality card. Hobby boxes are more expensive it seems though. As if they weren’t expensive enough. I wonder if Topps update will get Kyle Schwarber.

This Set probably Would have been An Above Average Product if it had Cubs New Sensation KYLE SCHWARBER . But he’s Nowhere to be found unless i overlooked it. So basically it’s just a Redo of the Regular Bowman Set without the paper base. In the future i think it would help the set if Topps Changed up the Design to make it stand out from the Previous Bowman set of earlier in the year.

One name, Kris Bryant Bowman Rookie Cards!!!! They held a lot of top vets out of Bowman like Miguel Cabrera, JV, etc so this may be going to the form of series 2 like some of the rumors…. I would also rather have a vet chrome set than paper so it does have some draw to the product!

GG
GG

I would rather have Chrome than the base set. It’s a crisper-cleaner card. It is all preference to the individual collector. Topps brand cards are all we have right now unless you don’t mind the generic look of Panini, Upper Deck, etc.

Adam
Adam

A great looking product, but like Stephen said, not really a need with chrome in the regular Bowman.

Stephen

This set is really just a money maker for Topps. The normal Bowman set is fine, but this set is useless. The only reason that this set could possibly be good is that you get two autographs per hobby box, instead of one. Unless you are a rookie autograph collector, you should avoid this product at all costs.
