User Rating:

2015 Bowman Baseball comes with the promise of a bigger checklist of prospects to go alongside a lot of the familiar elements. Once again promising one autograph per hobby box, the big focus is on finding baseball's next big thing.

The 2015 Bowman Baseball base set comes with 150 cards, which translates to 120 veterans and 30 rookies. This is down significantly from recent years where it has been 220 cards. However, Bowman is known best for its prospect content.

Numbered base parallels include Silver, Purple, Blue, Gold, hobby-only Orange (#/25), Red (#/5) and Black (1/1). Silver Ice, jumbo-only Red Ice (#/5) and White Ice (1/1) versions are also available. Randomly inserted are Wave Refractor hot packs that add a little bit of texture.

While the base set might be smaller, the Prospects and Chrome Prospects portion of the set has grown to 150 cards. This is up from the traditional 110 cards. 2015 Bowman Baseball has more than 50 Chrome Prospect Autographs, all of which come with on-card signatures.

As always, there are several Refractor parallels for the Chrome cards as well. In addition to basic Refractors, they come in numbered Purple, Blue, Gold, hobby-exclusive Orange (#/25), Red (#/5) and Superfractor (1/1). Printing Plates are also randomly inserted.

In addition to the the Chrome Prospect Autographs, there are also Rookie Autographs. Parallels follow a similar pattern as prospects.

More signatures can be found in Sophomore Standouts Autographs, Dual Autographs, Bowman Black and All-America Game Autographs, which were signed when the players were in high school. Topps is promising four times as many total dual autographs as last year.

The product's only memorabilia cards are Futures Game Relics. Numbered to 25, these use jersey swatches from the minor league all-star game.

2015 Bowman Baseball has a couple of inserts that compliment the set's overall prospecting theme. The Farm's Finest Minis is a large set that encompasses the top five minor league players for each MLB team. Parallels come in the form of several Shimmer Refractors as well as Autographs and one-of-one Superfractors.

Bowman Scouts' Top 100 counts down the best prospects in all of baseball. The cards are done on Chrome stock. Parallels include Die-Cut, Die-Cut Autographed Orange (#/25) and Die-Cut Superfractor (1/1).

Rookie Recollections jumps back 25 years to 1990 Bowman, a set highlighted by rookie cards of Frank Thomas and others. Inserted one per hobby box, these inserts take photos from when these rookies were just starting out and impose them on the 2015 design. Four levels of Refractor parallels are all autographed.

Product Configuration: Hobby - 24 packs per box, 10 cards per pack; Jumbo - 12 packs per box, 32 cards per pack

2015 Bowman Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Ryan Cracknell

Good: Distinct design from recent years, on-card autographs galore.

Bad: Weak checklist (at least for now), not enough color in a box, loss of enhanced stats that were used in Chrome and Draft last year.

The Bottom Line: 2015 Bowman Baseball sticks with what’s worked. I don’t delve deep into prospecting but a lot of others do and have the patience to stick with a player over the course of their potentially lengthy minor league development. But that said, at this point there isn’t that one cornerstone name that makes even the casual prospector interested in chasing their first Chrome autograph. Looking beyond just the autograph, I got the sense of a major lack of color from the set on a per box basis. I get the sense that after making some nice strides last year with the main Bowman brands, it might be time to continue to reassess and make some big decisions, the biggest of which might be to ditch the Paper portion of Bowman altogether and go with just Chrome.

Staff Rating:
2.9 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.1/5.0

The biggest thing for me about this year’s design is that it’s different. It’s not an extreme makeover like flagship baseball had, but it’s something. Rather than going for the full border of year’s past, it’s just one side of white. The other side sees the image bleed off of it. There’s lots going on though, maybe too much. I’m guessing the idea is to build off of past designs while offering something futuristic to match the possibilities the prospects bring. I don’t grasp design theory, only what my eyes tell me personally.

Here, it’s mixed. I like that the framing of the players is big in the photos. They are awfully busy, though. The removal of some of one side of border comes into play with the color-based parallels. They don’t stand out nearly as much as they have in the past. For something that’s a cornerstone of the brand, likely second only to the prospects, that’s something that needs considering. I actually completely missed a Silver paper parallel until going back through to put everything in order.

I also don’t know what happened to the cool visual take on advanced stats that were used in 2014 Bowman Chrome and Draft. Those were some of my favorite things about those sets as it looked at numbers from a different angle. Here, we’re back to basic stats, write-ups and such.

My favorite cards in 2015 Bowman Baseball from a design perspective are the Ice parallels. Not only do they bring the color, but the patterned background for some added pop.

Checklist: 2.8/5.0

Personally, I’m not a big prospector. I don’t follow players’ every step on their way through the minors. At the same time, I understand most Bowman sets are an exercise in patience. That guy autograph you’ve never heard of today could be baseball’s next big thing in a couple of years. But even with that in mind, the pickings appear to be pretty slim in this set. Part of that is the success of Bowman Draft. By getting nearly every early draft pick from last year in 2014 Draft, that leaves the leftovers for here. And there aren’t a lot of them. The shift to the international players is solid but there are still lots of unknowns.

Between this set, Bowman Chrome and Bowman Draft, the line as a whole still feels like one set too many. Going from a strictly prospecting perspective, a combination of Bowman/Bowman Chrome for the undrafted players and late bloomers and Bowman Draft for the draftees would cover things nicely.

Value: 2.8/5.0

I’m not sure how Bowman moves so well with just one autograph per hobby box. Even with the moderate price point, two wouldn’t be unreasonable. But that’s Bowman and the formula works. Where I felt left down was in the Refractor department. Outside of the other insert sets, I got just one Refractor in the box. And that’s with a larger checklist, which should lead to more color in a box. There was also four paper parallels, but these are nearly as exciting to me outside of the Ice cards. While it may not help secondary market values, upping the number of Refractors per box would make, for me at least, a more enjoyable break. And doing so would necessarily sacrifice the overall structure of the sets. Just up the number of basic inserts and maybe one other so that they’re relatively easy to find and keep the rest as limited as they are now.

The Fun Factor: 3.0/5.0

Not being a big-time prospector, this isn’t usually my favorite set of the year. And while there have been some solid changes, there’s only so much that can be done with what appears to be a weaker checklist (at least for now). The overall lack of color outside the inserts is also somewhat of a letdown. Instead, the fun will come over the long-term when I go through my Bowman cards every year or so and pick out a card or two of a player who has gone on to MLB stardom.

Well, it’s 4years later. Just about the time it takes for all the smoke to clear. It’s clearly obvious this set is awesome. It’s funny how things turn out with expectations of prospects. But that’s exactly what makes this set and other Bowman sets like this tick. If you’re really looking to be a investment player in the rookie card market, Bowman is where you’re going to look to. Nobody mentioned Atlanta Braves rookie sensation Austin Riley. However, Bowman had the wear with all to include him in the set…the rest is young history with that kid.

“I hope that topps isn’t getting to point where a tweek here & there suddenly you have 2 different products. They don’t put much effort into card designs with computers making there job easy for them.”

As a web designer, I resent the fact that people seem to think that “computers make [designer’s] job easier.”

Computers are still just a tool like any other. The actual DESIGN is done by a human being. Period. All computers do, is to widen the possibilities of what could be done. Which actually, technically, makes the job slightly harder, ironically enough, because it gives the designers more decisions they have to make. Computers make it much easier to go too overboard. A good designer must needs recognize when they are getting into the “too much going on” territory, and have the discipline to reign themselves in.

I saw it asked before, but why are some numbers red on the base? Is this another variation?

Just pulled the Pages of History Auto Booklet Redemption. Autos such as Schwarber, Owens, Buxton, Syndergaard, Correa, Rondon, and Lindor! Pretty satisfied I’d say.

Rating based on my experience only I started this year with 4 Hobby boxes and 1 Hobby jumbo. I felt pretty good to only be 28 cards short of my goal f putting a 450-card set (Base, BP and BCP) together, which I usually do other years. 20 Jumbo boxes and over #2000 later, I’m still short the same 28 cards– except for the gold parallel set where I have 12-15 copies of each of the 28 cards I’m missing from the set and NOT ONE OTHER GOLD CARD. I usually try to put a gold set together, too. Do you sell single cards??? I have never seen anything like this kind of distribution.

Nice product, Bowman 2015 looks similiar to this years topps. I hope that topps isn’t getting to point where a tweek here & there suddenly you have 2 different products. They don’t put much effort into card designs with computers making there job easy for them. If there’s a series 2 may they will put chrome mlbs instead of having separate product.

I opened several (a lot) of blasters and 4 of the small boxes this morning. I did pull 5 autos but only one chrome rookie, and it was a green (Michael Taylor 74/99). At least the other 4 were different players! On the mini card “Farm’s Finest”, I pulled one Red (Max Fried 2/5), and a green, blue, and a purple.

Overall, without trying to sound like a Bowman/Topps employee, I thought these cards looked pretty good. I have been a collector for a significant period of time, but only started with Bowman in 2013, so I don’t have a lot of history with this brand. Like many others, it seems all my money went to National Treasures in 2014, but I was able to finish out the Bowman 2014 set with some help from Ebay on some of the harder to get autos, in spite of Bowman’s odd numbering system in 2014 with their first set and then a second set, with both being called 2014.

First of all, good looking product, but while I was opening a jumbo pack, I found three interesting cards. All three of them were prospect cards, and all three of them didn’t have a name or team logo stamp on the front of the card. Now I had seen these on eBay but thought them a hoax, until I pulled them today. Any idea of how rare these cards are, or are they just mistakes??
Thanks

I’m going to give what I think is an actual objective review. The cards are very nice and traditional looking (nowhere near 2014 Finest). The regular base and prospect base have one flaw with the foil on the player’s name which does make it difficult to read but it’s easy to read on the chrome. Now I could give it 5 stars because with the 2 jumbos I busted I got 2 color autos, a Joc Pederson refractor auto, Buxton/Gordon dual #/99, and some higher ranked prospect parallels but I was lucky. So I give it 3 stars because it is hit or miss. The problem with determining value on a prospect brand is you don’t know how each of these players will do in the long run. Rodon, Devers, and these type of players may flop and some of the players you’ve never heard of turn out to be stars. All in all it’s a very nice, solid product.

Steve
Steve

Have opened 3 Jumbo Hobby Boxes now.
First met the base requirements , second had a hot pack of blue refractors in it, third had 2 chrome auto’s of the same player #/500.
No mistrikes, but for $170 I like to get 2 different auto’s.

Ted
Ted

Buying this product just for the inserts is definitely not worth it. I opened a 12-box hobby case and literally 100% of the base cards were so significantly off-centered (70/30 or worse), I could not advertise any card as being any better than near mint. Many cards were completely mis-cut with white showing on one side of the card. Does anybody else ever experience such poor quality from Topps? I have complained time and time again to Topps but they don’t even respond. I send them damaged cards and they send damaged cards in return, almost as if they know nothing about card quality. If you have not purchased any of these cards yet, do so knowing that most if not all base cards will be off-centered. Topps will continue to produce crap unless more collectors complain.

Apologies if this is a dumb question, but aren’t the Chrome prospect/rookie auto’s (besides the Green that are retail only) found only in Hobby? I thought that this was always how it was – non-Chrome autos are found in Retail (which is confirmed above) and Chrome are found only in Hobby.

It doesn’t say that above, but I think it is. Looking at a retail pack from a blaster now and unless I’m reading it wrong, Green are the only Chrome auto’s you can find in Retail (and am just talking about Prospect and Rookie auto’s, not the mini’s, Top 100, etc. Pretty sure they are only Hobby as well).

Can someone confirm?
Thanks,
Ryan

PS – if true, this really makes Retail worthless right? If so, that stinks because like a few have mentioned already, I have been getting quite a few non-Chrome autos in almost every blaster (AND like mentioned already, usually duplicates not even from the same store, but stores that are close to each other in town…).

Just opened a jumbo box and have to say was rather disappointed. Autos were nothing special, one was on a mini non parallel. Only 1 Bryant (cardboard) and 1 Rondon (chrome). Did get 1 red parallel cardboard 4/5. Actually had better luck with the retail boxes from Target.

Very disappointed in the jumbo box I purchased. One Kris Bryant pulled from the whole box and of the three autos pulled, two were of the same player. I guess my bad luck with Bowman continues.

First off, it looks like a combo of last years chrome combined with the base draft. Secondly, to many of the same prospects that have been in their bowman products since ’13. Third, I can’t stop pulling Bryant’s & Schwarbers but am short a ton from even making the base set and Im not even a breaker. Opened a lot of blasters and got the same junk. And as usual the same junkie auto!

I like the Look of the set it reminds me of a past Bowman set from then they had Red, Blue and Red/Blue cars. I am dating myself but I am just getting back into the car collecting hobby after an 18 years brake.

Topps/Bowman is my choice for cards.

The rookie autos seem to go in runs. Our hobby case had four rookie autos – base, refractor, blue and gold.

So, out of 13 autos (had a mini, as well) in the case we ended up with 8 prospects. Never seen it split like that in last few years of Bowman cases we’ve had.

Why do some cards, both base, prospects, and Chrome, have red card numbers, red positions and a red background for the player names?

I’ve come across four of those from one blaster and one jumbo pack.

Thanks.

I was in a group break on Wednesday. It was 5 cases of Jumbo and 5 cases of Hobby. It was sold in a variety of packages, e.g., all the 100 Top Prospects, Prospects and Rookies, BY PLAYER. I purchased a Padres Rookie who had an auto in the checklist. I didn’t hit 1 auto or 1 color card. lol.. 10 CASES. I noticed that Rookie autos appeared to be far and few between. There are 22 Rookies with autos listed. I may have had just a bit of bad luck, and that happens. But, it looks like there are fewer base rookie autos out there as compared to base prospect autos. Just saying…..

Joe Panik had his RC in 2014 Topps Heritage High Numbers.
We will be lucky if we get a Kris Bryant RC in 2015 Topps Series 2.
I will be hunting down some 2015 Bowman on Wednesday!

KB has a base card, “BCP100 Kris Bryant – Chicago Cubs” Not very happy that the three big names on the CL just came out in draft….. I was hoping for Conforto to add some excitement. Also no happy to now have to worry about pulling vet autos “Sophmores” that probably count as hits.

NO base Kris Bryant or Joe Panik cards.. Just a few inserts. I think that is a good thing… Just not sure. There is a Rusney Castillo RC ( he is in the minors) and there is a Yasmany Tomas card (BCP) .. which is awesome!

I was a little skeptical about this set but after seeing the checklist I think they did a pretty good job considering the lack of high name prospects/rookies that don’t have bowman autos already. Was hoping for a Matz auto but maybe he will get a rookie one next season.

Hey Ryan. Any idea on the pack breakdown in jumbo? i.e. of the 32 cards how many chrome, paper, etc?
Thanks!

As said by others this product looks as bad as 2014 finest. AND THE KNEW BOWMAN CHROME INSIGNIA IS UGLY I LIKE THE OLD BOWMAN CHROME MARK. Also green refractors or ugly as this set. Are they trying to lose collectors cause i am about to stop! TOPPS LISTEN TO US!!!!!!!!!

The different color base cards make it look to finesty. If they all would of been the color of the Owens card it would of been better looking. Besides that looks good.

Not your traditional Bowman set. The best thing to do is to wait until release day and buy 2-3 blasters. The first stock of blasters has a lot better odds at an autograph than hobby boxes do.
