2014 Topps Chrome Football sees the return of one of the sport's more dependable products. The relatively straightforward mix of rookie autographs, Refractors galore and chromium stock have made it a perennially popular product. This year doesn't see much in the way of drastic changes. The brand sticks with what has worked in the past including one signed rookie.

The 2014 Topps Chrome Football base set has 220 cards. The checklist is split evenly between rookies and veterans. In addition to these are 30 Veteran Variations and 25 Rookie Variations showcasing different photos.

The parallels are plentiful. Basic Refractors land 1:3 packs. Other Refractor parallels include Blue Wave (one per hobby box), Pulsar (one per hobby box), STS Camo (#/499), BCA Pink (#/399), Black (#/299), Blue (#/199), Sepia (#/99), Gold (#/50), Red (#/25) and Superfractors (1/1). Base cards also Printing Plates. Pulsar, Sepia, Printing Plates and Superfractors are all exclusive to hobby packs.

Rookie Autographs have long been one of the cornerstones of Topps Chrome, even though there's only one per hobby box. These take the base card design and add an on-card signature. Besides basic Refractors (#/150), other parallels include STS Camo (#/99), BCA Pink (#/75), Black (#/25), Pulsar (#/15), Gold (#/10), Red (#/5) and Superfractors (1/1). Rookie Autograph Variations are only in hobby packs and are numbered to 75.

Veterans have a very limited presence in the way of signatures in 2014 Topps Chrome. Base Veteran Autograph Variations are numbered to 10.

Other premium signed inserts include Rookie Autograph Patches (#/50), Dual Rookie Autographs (#/30) and Triple Rookie Autographs (#/15).

Fantasy Focus (1:12 packs) inserts carry over from the flagship 2014 Topps Football set. Refractors are numbered to 99 while Superfractors are one-of-ones found only in hobby packs.

Other basic inserts in 2014 Topps Chrome Football take a retro approach. These include 1963 Topps Minis (1:12 packs), 1965 Topps Football (1:24 packs) and 1985 Topps Football (1:6 packs). Each has Refractor parallels. 1963 Minis and 1965 Topps cards also have autographed versions numbered to 15.

Product Configuration: 24 packs per box, 4 cards per pack

2014 Topps Chrome Football Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Good design, mostly on-card autographs, Refractors.

Bad: Lots of short print rookie autographs, huge print run, some sticker autographs.

The Bottom Line: 2014 Topps Chrome had a ton of excitement leading up to the release like most years, but the sheer quantity of cards produced has greatly altered the hobby reaction. The cards look good, but with the majority of key rookie autographs short printed and given that it features the same design and images as flagship Topps, the lasting value is not there and the box prices have nowhere to go but down.

Staff Rating:
2.8 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.75/5.0

Everything looks better in Chrome. Even in years with a weak base design, the chromium can somewhat overcome that. On the positive side, the 2014 Topps design is strong, so Chrome takes that to the next level. I will admit it is annoying to see combine images for some rookies in a late-November release, but that can’t really be blamed on Chrome specifically.

Colorful base Refractors are a staple of Topps Chrome and that continues in 2014 with various colors averaging about one in every two or three packs. This makes them common enough to appreciate what they add, but not so many that they feel overdone.

The inserts largely look nice but don’t really add much and mostly consist of the retro reboots that were available as autographs in flagship Topps. The Rookie Die-Cuts are back and look good but are nothing new.

One main positive for Chrome is the on-card rookie autographs and that is largely the case except for the multi-signed cards and a few of the lesser-known rookie players.

Checklist: 2.0/5.0

Topps Chrome is mostly about the rookies and that is what collectors are looking for in the checklist. With 110 rookies in the base set, most of the relevant names are covered. Among the veterans, leaving Ben Roethlisberger out of the base set seems like an odd choice, but there is not room for everyone.

The autograph checklist is where Topps Chrome has the biggest issues. While it was not confirmed by Topps, it appears that 20 rookies, including most of the big names, are very short printed. While they are technically able to be pulled, this greatly diminishes overall interest in the product.

Value: 2.0/5.0

There is a fine line on many products in regards to the ability to make money, and 2014 Topps Chrome Football is not the product to try that. While box prices are not expensive, resale value is unlikely to work out in your favor. For those that collect for the sake of collecting, the real value is found with the quality of the cards themselves.

The short printed rookies and large production numbers are what ultimately hurt the value the most. With only one autograph per box, and knowing that the top rookie autographs are unlikely to be pulled by the common collector who breaks a box or two (or even a case), most collectors are probably going to end up disappointed with the results if they are expecting to recoup what they paid. Yeah, if you pull a “Money Manziel†autograph, you will see strong sales, but that is the exception, not the rule.

The Fun Factor: 3.5/5.0

Despite all the negatives, Chrome was a fun break because I like the brand and I like the design this year. There was nothing that wowed me, but the cards I pulled mostly looked good and I enjoyed the product. It was a little bit of a buzzkill at the onset to know I had virtually no shot at Beckham, Watkins, Cooks, Evans, Bridgewater or Manziel, but it helped me keep more realistic exceptions and this is a key mindset for collectors to have when opening products.

This was a very solid year for Chrome Football. Today I love reading reviews after a few years go by and the rookie classes settle in (or not). Getting pumped for Johnny and dissing Nick Foles sounds backwards today but was totally acceptable in 2014.

Prices spiked for all 2014 football hobby boxes when Garoppolo fever hit after his trade to S.F. Prior to that, Chrome hobby boxes (Topps & Bowman) could be had for as little as $25-$45 all day. I sure bought my fair share of 2014 Topps Chrome before the spike so I’m happy. I know I bought a TON of those 3 pack retail bundles and countless blaster boxes. Sometimes they’d be on sale at KMart or WalMart for $6 and $12.99 respectively.

Chasing the refractor “rainbow” is always entertaining. Besides many different Garoppolos, I have a sweet Tom Brady Gold #/50. I also have dozens of those blaster-exclusive bonus packs. (I also happen have hundreds of other such bonus packs from UD, Panini, A&G, Gypsy Queen, you name it. I hoarded them thinking there was nothing of value in them and kept tossing them in a case. I think that might be a good thing….)

2014 Chrome Football also happened to drop a few months after I had just jumped back into the hobby after a 20 year hiatus. So, maybe I’m biased. But 2013-2014 Topps products are still my favorite years to collect.

I’ve bought two boxes on ebay and have gotten pretty lucky. Hit a Jerrick McKinnon Pink #’d to 75 and a Jimmy Garappolo which is great considering what is lurking on the rookie auto checklist. One thing I really like about Chrome is the quality of the cards themselves. The break is fun since even after you’ve found your hit, there is still plenty of color you can chase. I do wish the set was released a little later so that most of the players were in their uniforms as opposed to combine pictures. I guess it is really tough to get good pulls, but on the bright side, if you get lucky and hit one, it will probably do really well on ebay as opposed to other brands since Chrome is extremely popular. You can get boxes on ebay for around $40 now which would make a bad break not seem as a waste.

First hobby box I have broken in years…Very disappointed at all of the combine photos.. I pulled a sticker auto of an offensive lineman, and several regular refractors… I once again realize why I walked away from the hobby five years ago..
Blahh..

Love the design of this product. Maybe it’s because I’m a rookie at this. Been my favorite looking card so far. Nice hits in each retail box I buy.

I pulled the manziel I believe it to be the superrefractor how do I tell between that and just a base refractor

Ryan Cracknell

Superfractors have a gold circular pattern. They’re also serial numbered 1/1. Regular refractors have a rainbow background when tilted.

I have seen a lot of collectors upset over this product and it sucks to see that! I have purchased 3 Hobby boxes and have 4 more on the way to me now. I got lucky on my 2nd and 3rd boxes hitting a blue Manziel refractor, an Andrew Luck sephia refractor, and my monster pull a variation Teddy Bridgewater auto /75. I’m happy overall with the product but do understand where the bad reviews come into play. The combine shirts are embarrassingly lazy on Topps part, The base set of Veterans are worthless, and it seems that the packs follow a very basic pattern. After only 3 boxes I could probably tell you in order what style refractor I will pull in each pack in my next few boxes.

Was topps lazy? Yes. But I also think there are some good pulls still out there and for $40-$50 a hobby box it’s well worth it.

i bought 3 boxes all my autos were tampa bay bucs, nope not mike evans the only auto i am interesed in in 2014, this was over a month ago at $60 now boxes are $40 retail. Chrome was my safety net in collecting and now im terrified to buy 1 box at $40….i would like to know the full story behind this tragedy, and what about Topps losing thier NFL licence??

In regular retail $10 packs of 2014 Topps Chrome you get 12cards & then 3refractors for a total of $15. I guess the “blaster boxes” are the retail $19.99 boxes with no 3card pack of refractor parallels & a total of 32 cards. And then last but not least, the hobby boxes where you’re guaranteed a rookie autograph & a bunch of other cards that are supposedly exclusive to the hobby boxes. The hobby boxes go for $90 retail. I got mine for $40 tax, shipping, & all & I still feel like I was hosed. The 32card boxes are crappy. The hobby box I was EXTREMELY disappointed with. I hit some Herron WR from Tampa Bay & two serial numbered cards. The only blue wave refractor I hit was of Ryan Grant. Woooooow! For now on I’m just gonna stick with the $10 retail packs bc outta the 8 I’ve bought, I won a 1963 Topps Chrome Blake Bortles Autograph Rookie /15 Redemption Card. And that right there is worth enough on eBay to reimburse me for all the money I’ve spent on cards for the last two months. Definitely gonna stick with buying cases & reselling them to people like that one dude on here that paid $800 for a case. Sorry dude, I dunno what you were thinking to begin with. But there’s plenty of people out there that’ll pay it. So if ya need any sealed cases cheaper than $800 hmu. 1 case = 12hobby boxes = 24packs per hobby box.

man this has to be the worse chrome product ever. After pre-ording 2 cases. No numbered autos , best card was a devonta freeman base auto. now the cases are 400 or below. Topps way over produced this product.

SEMPER FROM BLOWOUT
SEMPER FROM BLOWOUT

This product has roughly 72 autos if I’m correct. The base pack out is terrible, and the dealer bailout is terrible, Cases are to be had at just around 450-490 range now.
We figured out a trick…….if the auto is in a certain spot of one box meaning like top left row 2nd in, then every auto in that case is in the same row, DO NOT BUY LOOSE PACKS… I picked up 35 boxes without the auto between 7.00-11.00. The base in this product gets no respect nor does the refractor only the auto and the gold /50 and below.

JamesG
JamesG

Oops, I left one out. Also got the Moncrief die-cut refractor. I might be missing it, but the pack doesn’t seem to show a pull rate for these.

JamesG
JamesG

Just started busting a hobby box last night. I’m a little surprised at the collation I’ve seen so far. The packs state a RC per pack. Out of 9 packs, I’ve received 2-3 RCs per pack and they have all been WRs. I can’t complain so far since I’ve hit multiples of Beckham Jr., Watkins, Evans, and one Patterson. Just seems like an unusual break so far. No auto or #d cards yet.

Mike F
Mike F

Buy strictly retail as it’s my only option where I live and I don’t know who to trust online to buy hobby. Besides the orange refractors that come 3 per rack pack, not a whole lot of color considering the amount I’ve bought. Lots of X and base refractors though.
Did pull a Sammy Watkins black refractor auto /25. Base Jordan Matthews auto, Sankey and Mettenberger Camo autos.
No full set yet. Bout 15 shy of base set and I have roughly half a 5000 ct box of these. Only Topps product I’ have been buying lately cause they are a rip off and this year is no better.Hopefully Panini does something with that license.

Sara Cooke
Sara Cooke

Out of all the 2014 NFL boxes I’ve opened (Panini Prizm, Topps Chrome, Topps platinum, Bowman and Bowman Chrome) this is my favorite set.

I haven’t done card collecting since the early 90’s where it was just a fun game for us as kids with all of the stats since the internet really wasn’t around to know the stats. Now most of the cards are worthless unfortunately but this box brought me back to the reason why I wanted to start collecting in the first place; the special cards you can get. Topps Chrome makes the customer feel like they’ve purchased something worthwhile and they’ve really done a great job with the different types of cuts and including autos which you’d never see growing up. You’d have to go and stalk a player just to get their autograph. This way is a little safer and fun when you see it :)

flea

average product at best. love the chrome but the value isn’t even there. out of 5 hobby boxes my best card was probably a teddy bridgewater black refractor /299. got no numbered autos and the majority of the autos i got sell for under 2 bucks

majestik101

Overall, I like this years Chrome FB. I only bought 3 boxes, I don’t intend to buy any more boxes (2013 I purchased about 6 boxes, did finally manage to pull an Eddie Lacy Refractor auto out of the 6th box). This years boxes yielded me 3 autos, and one /75 gold card. Autos were Jeremy Hill, Robert Herron, and Sammy Watkins Refractor Variation /75. Overall not a bad product, just keep your expectations in check. It’s worth $50 each box if you can get it cheaper, it’s worth it.

Great looking cads as always with Topps Chrome. Purchased 2 boxes, each gave 8 base refractors. Only problem 7 were doubles. They were from different cases bought two weeks apart.

Scott
Scott

retail boxes yield more than hobby ? WTH ? i bought 5 blasters at Walmart and got 4 auto’s. I have 6 cards that could be refractors but i’m not sure. does the back of card not have an (R) anymore ? someone help me see the difference please ??

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Scott » Refractors weren’t noted this year. They have the rainbow background when you tilt them in light.

Mike Pereira
Mike Pereira

If there are something like 10,000 plus cases of this made and each case you can safely get 3 complete sets. Then I’m assuming that there are 30,000-40,000 complete sets that can be made if you include retail. That’s alot of overproduction.

Mike Pereira
Mike Pereira

What happen to Topps Chrome??? Last year was so much more exciting even though I got UDA atleast it was a blue wave or something else. This is the biggest example of a manufacture slapping loyal collectors in the face and overproducing so they can cash in more money. HUGE step back for a product that Without the 600 or less auto limit you know there are guys like Mike Davis with 800 or more autos. A 50 case break and only one Manziel. Something definitely wrong. The warning signs are showing again like in the 90s. Hobby was good for awhile, collectors came back and manufactures see $$$$ and overproduce and bring down any value for longterm collector and true hobbists. Ebay, prospectors, and overproduction from manufactures have driven down any excitement in the hobby. Mind as well just have the autos in the boxes and forget about the singles.

So it looks like the refractor autos go #ed 150, 99, 75, then down to 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, then 1/1? Wow! How come the parallel autos couldn’t be more spaced out? No /50 like the Blue Wave in 2013? I’m just trying to make sense of what Topps is doing here I guess. Definitely going to make completing rainbows a lot more challenging. Just my thought though so I’m sure it doesn’t matter.

FIrst I would like to say I have used this site for set building for years, it has been my bible for contenders. thank you thank you

Second. Ryan-do you know the print run on the base autos, such as Bortles, Manziel ect ect. I was in a 50 case break and only saw 1 manziel and I only pulled 3 bortles autos. I know there is something like 12000 cases produced. Are the base autos of the big guys ssp’d or is there just so many cases that it makes them seem sp’d. Just curious, any info helps. I am not quite sure if I am dissappointed with Topps or the wholesalers who are selling the product.

Anthony » It does appear that most of the big signers (and some smaller ones) are tough pulls. We’ve got them listed at: http://www.cardboardconnection.com/2014-topps-chrome-football-rookie-autographs

Blaster packs have all had 3 xfractor a box so far, out of 2 boxes I bought. First hobby box coming in tomorrow. I’m staying positive and hoping I get a nice auto and some good low #’d cards

After busting a case of this stuff, I’d highly recommend staying away from hobby boxes and cases and going with rack packs instead. Rack packs seem to be yielding more color parallel autos than hobby boxes. Out of my case, and most others I’ve seen, you average about 2 refractor/color parallel autos and 10 base autos, most of which are of players that are UFA’s or late rounders. Disappointed that the Pulsars and Greens aren’t numbered but the refractors are nice looking cards.

I opened two boxes of retail and was happier with what I got out of them then the one box of hobby I opened. Out of all the autos to get, I get an undrafted player plus not on card. The only people getting value out of this are wholesalers, blowout and other presellers. I should have known something when one wholesaler stated a price of a case being below $600. Truely the only ones who got hosed here are the loyal collectors of Topps Chrome. Thanks Topps for making the collectors pay for the loss of your NFL license. I have two cases I over paid for and don’t feel like cracking. My other friends have 3 or more. Hope my dealer friends didn’t or too much and got rid of there’s quick.

Extremely dissapointed. Bought a case and pulled nothing but crap. Not a single x-fractor in the entire case?! Where are people getting these? Every single one of the blue waves and pulsars were of veterans. The autos were mostly UDA, 7th or 6th rounders though there were a couple decent ones: John Brown and Charles Sims. I guess Sims is decent. Rest: Brandon Coleman (who?) Robert Herron (who?) Damien Williams (who?) Davonta Freeman, Paul Richardson, Cody Latimer. All base autos. ALL color refractors were of veterans. Who gives a crap?! I paid over $800 for the case and that’s a rip-off. If I sold everything, maybe I’d get $200.

I was excited for this to come out but the bad reviews have me second guessing. Also was wondering how the 2014 hobby box is cheaper than the 2013 hobby box when not many people like the players coming out in 2013??? I may just get a blaster box and call it good depending on what I pull

Stick to retail rack packs as Topps put there better stuff in retail. I guess so people would get excite and then spend more on a hobby box and get dumped. BIG mistake getting rid of the 600 or less limit on autos. Now who knows how many Mike Davis base autos are out there while Sammy Watkins only sign a few. Atleast last year they had a limit so you had as good as chance to hit a LeVell Bell as hitting the fourth string TE. BIG MISTAKE not numbering base limit like 2013.

they either made a ton of this stuff or stevie wonder was in charge of collation because my 3 boxes yielded nothing but dog turds. anyone hyping this garbage should be met with major scrutiny.

After opening up a couple of boxes in my case I now know why their price on them is dropping so fast. Topps tricks. Eight Refractors means the 3 that you get in every box not numbered (blue wave, pulsar, green) then three base reflectors not numbered, and then finally just two numbered refractors??? After opening up my case I got 5 base autos of guys undrafted or round 6 or 7, and 5 base autos of guys in middle rounds, and finally 2 base autos of 2nd rounders. Got hosed big time. Don’t spend more than $40 a box on this stuff it’s not worth it due to lack of value. Sad the numbered refractors are more valuable than the autos

Even the blaster boxes are great loads of rookies and refractors so hobby boxes should be even more fun to bust.

Did topps not serial number the pulsar refractors????

Very disappointed how more than 3/4 the rookies are in their combine uniforms. I thought this was more of a stable quality set to hold value? Topps is very lazy, I said it. Last time I bought some chrome was 2012 when a lot of the rookies were team uniformed. Very disappointed again.

I just broke a case 10 base autos one refractor auto and one camo auto!(Big Ben is far from top 5 maybe top 5 steelers quarter backs of all time. I dont think ben is in the top 10 NFL Qb. Brady, both mannings, Luck, Rogers, Kaepernik, Willson, Brees, Romo, Dalton, Ryan, Rivers, Stafford. if I was making a team today id take injured QBs over ben like Foles and Palmer.

Any set with veterans that does not have a base card of Big Ben Roethislberger is pure crap .. a top 5 Qb and not in the set while way less qbs are.. total garbage..

SEMPER FROM BLOWOUT » All the places I’ve looked have it on Nov. 26th still. A bunch of sets were just bumped pack but this doesn’t appear to be one of them — at least at this time.

Is there not a refractor parallel numbered to /50 for the base rookie autos like the Blue Wave parallel of 2013 Chrome? It just jumps from /75 down to /25 in the info above. Thanks.
