Okay, let's forget for a second that Tim Burton and Marky Mark don't go well with talking apes. However, the cards the movie spawned are solid, featuring some of the only autograph cards of a couple of entertainment legends. For collectors, it's probbably easier to remember 2001 Topps Planet of the Apes over the film they're based on.
The 90-card base set doesn't hold any surprises. It kicks off with bio cards for key characters before proceeding into standard story recap cards. A handful of behind-the-scenes looks and a checklist round out the checklist.
The standout part of 2001 Topps Planet of the Apes are the autographs. While lead star Mark Wahlberg didn't sign for the set, it's still very strong. This is the only set (other than cut signatures) to have the signature of late Hollywood icon Charlton Heston. Heston also starred in the original Planet of the Apes. This is also the only place collectors will find a Kris Kristofferson autograph. Other signers include Helena Bonham-Carter, Tim Roth and Linda Harrison (Nova from the first film).
It is worth noting that an Estella Warren autograph card does exist. Not in packs, a couple have surfaced over the years on the secondary market. It's exceptionally rare. Topps did give at least one away as a door prize at a card show several years ago, which should show the card is legit.
Movie Memorabilia cards come from costumes. Among the seven cards are two with star Mark Wahlberg. Like autographs, memorabilia cards can only be found in hobby packs and boxes. Packaging makes this very clear on the front. Hobby boxes mention the autographs and memorabilia, retail does not.
Of the basic inserts in 2001 Topps Planet of the Apes, Stickers are the most coveted. Exclusive to retail packs, not a lot make their way to the secondary market. They're not fancy. Their past popularity has been largely based in limited availability.
Other inserts include Simian Suede, Embossed Foil and foil box toppers.
