1996 Topps Return of the Jedi Widevision rounds out the tallboy take on the original trilogy. It might not be the most expensive set of Star Wars trading cards, but like other Widevision releases, it's extremely attractive.
The over-sized cards use shots from the movie in their original dimensions. The images are sharp, coming from a digital remaster of the original film. Until then, Return of the Jedi hadn't been showcased in a card set like this. The 1996 Topps Return of the Jedi Widevision base set has 144 cards.
Like the similar Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back sets leading up to it, card fronts are similar to storyboards. In addition to the large-format image, cards have the Return of the Jedi logo at the top. A stripe along the bottom has a caption that simply states where the scene on the card is set and a holographic foil logo. Backs have a writeup and a production image.
The structure of 1996 Topps Return of the Jedi Widevision structure is simple. Besides the base set, there are few inserts. Ten Finest inserts offer chromium renditions of Ralph McQuarrie production artwork. Every case also came with a redemption for a 3-D card of Admiral Ackbar overlooking a Star Destroyer.
1996 Topps Return of the Jedi Widevision boxes have 24 packs of eight cards. Each also comes with one of six mini posters that highlight international theatrical posters.
