1986-87 Fleer Basketball is one of the most important sports card sets of all-time. Boasting rookie cards from several all-time greats, including Michael Jordan, it is one of the most collected and most valuable sets of the last 40 years.

When Topps bowed out of the basketball card market after their 1981-82 set, it left a void in the hobby. Although the Star Company stepped in and made NBA cards, they had extremely low print runs and were fairly rare.

This brings collectors to 1986-87 Fleer Basketball. The sport's first traditional set in five years, the checklist has 132 cards. There are also 11 stickers, which come one per pack.

The cards have a distinct design highlighted by borders that are red, white and blue. A thin yellow frame holds in both the player photo and nameplate. The bottom of the card has the player's name, team and position. The crown-style Fleer logo appears at the top of the card with a small ribbon that reads "Premier," highlighting the fact that it's the company's first basketball card set.

Because of the lull in sets, the majority of the checklist is made of rookie cards. The list of greats is enough to fill a wing of the Basketball Hall of Fame. The Michael Jordan rookie is, by far, the most sought-after card in the set. It routinely sells for thousands. Just watch out for fakes.

Other 1986-87 Fleer Basketball rookies of note include Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Clyde Drexler, Dominique Wilkins, Isiah Thomas, Hakeem Olajuwon, Joe Dumars and Chris Mullin.

Because 1986-87 Fleer Basketball is such a popular set, collectors should be extremely careful buying high-end singles, especially those in top condition. The simple printing techniques of the time made it easy for counterfeits. When shopping for the best cards in the set, many collectors may want to consider buying professionally graded cards from reputable companies like PSA, BGS and SGC.

User Reviews

  1. Michael Jordan rookie is the highlight of this very expensive set. It sells at a very high price, especially when graded. The design and photography are nothing to write home about. I still would’nt mind having the set.
