St. Louis Cardinals Collecting and Fan Guide

St. Louis Cardinals

Franchise Founded: 1892
Championships: 11
Team Collectibility Rating: 8.5

The St. Louis Cardinals were founded in 1882 and have one of the most storied and successful histories in baseball. The Cardinals currently have 11 World Series titles and have been home to numerous Hall of Fame players. This makes them a very popular option for collectors.

Between their induction in the league and 1926, the St. Louis Cardinals struggled as a franchise, compiling a winning percentage of just .406. However, the team broke out in the 1920's led by Rogers Hornsby, who won the Triple Crown in 1922 and 1925. The team would go to win their first World Series in 1926. The franchise won two more World Series championships in 1931 and 1934 with the famous "Gashouse Gang." This group included notable players Dizzy Dean, Johnny Mize and Joe Medwick. Medwick would capture the 1934 Triple Crown on the way to the team's World Series title.

The 1940s and '50s saw the emergence of franchise icons Stan Musial and Red Schoendeinst. The Cardinals won the World Series in 1942, 1944 and 1946 before a drought that would last until 1964. The number of stars that emerged during the 1960's is lengthy and includes Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Ken Boyer, Orlando Cepeda and Steve Carlton,to name a few. Gibson, in particular, emerged as a dominating pitcher. He would eventually go on to win both the MVP and Cy Young Awards.

The 1970s and '80s saw the introduction of "Whitey Ball," under the managerial tutelage of Whitey Herzog. The team would trade for future Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, who would become a face of the franchise. Veteran players Keith Hernandez and Joe Torre each won MVP awards during this period.

The late-1990s saw the emergence of Mark McGwire as one of the most feared sluggers in the league. In 1998, an iconic team rivalry with the Chicago Cubs become personal. McGwire and the Cubs' Sammy Sosa would battle to the season's end in pursuit of the single-season home run record. Since that time, the St. Louis Cardinals have won two additional World Series titles(2006,2011).

In 2001, one of the decades most dominating players would make his big league debut. This man was Albert Pujols. The immediate impact he made in the sports collectibles hobby was unlike any the industry had ever seen.
