Stan Musial

Date of Birth: 11/21/1920

Rookie Card Year: 1948

Investment Rating: 7.0

Overview

One of the greatest hitters in baseball history, Stan Musial card collectors are among the most passionate in the hobby. Although he is sometimes overshadowed by other big names of the era like Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays, Musial is still an important part of the game's history and collecting. The 24-time All-Star was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1969. Over the years, Musial has signed a lot of autographs and, understandably, his authenticated signatures can be purchased for very reasonable rates considering his accomplishments.

Despite a lengthy career, "Stan the Man" actually has a small amount of available cards. The most desirable Stan Musial card is his 1948 Bowman rookie card. It is interesting to note that Musial did not make his Topps debut until 1958.

Stan Musial Cards, Rookie Cards and Autographed Memorabilia Guide 1

The first thing that catches the eye with the 1948 Bowman Stan Musial card is that it is black and white. The card is also noticeably undersized, checking in at 2 1/16" by 2 1/2". The card has a very generic appearance. If it weren't for the information on the back, one might think they were simply looking at an old photo. Thin paper and centering issues plague the card and professionally graded cards above a 5 are in short supply. This Stan Musial rookie is near the top of the 1948 Bowman Baseball list, along with the Yogi Berra rookie card.

Why is the 1948 Bowman considered to be Stan Musial’s “rookie card” when there is a 1947 Exhibits Card (164 A)?
Thanks.

I have a Stan Musial autographed baseball. Ball is somewhat yellowed, not bad, but some discoloration. Autograph is very legible. Can you give me a price range for this item? Thanks
