Seattle Seahawks Collecting and Fan Guide
Overview
Although their overall team success has been intermittent at best, the Seattle Seahawks enjoy one of the strongest fan bases and are currently among the best teams in the NFL. After their first Super Bowl win in 2013, fans and collectors hope the Seahawks can become the next NFL dynasty. Based on the Hall of Fame players in their history and a current team that is stacked with talent, the Seattle Seahawks are one of the top modern collecting options.
Although the expansion franchise was awarded in 1974, the Seattle Seahawks did not begin playing until 1976. Originally a member of the NFC West, Seattle moved to the AFC West following the 1976 season and remained there until 2001. In 2002, they rejoined the NFC West.
While they have become a consistent playoff team in recent years, the history of the Seahawks is largely filled with mediocre seasons. The one exception to this is a period in the mid-80s where they were led by head coach Chuck Knox. With four playoff appearances in six years and win percentage of .500 or greater in each season, it appeared that the team was on the verge of something big. This never materialized and the Seahawks floundered for most of the next decade.
In 1997, Paul Allen, of Microsoft fame, purchased the team. Mike Holmgren was hired as the head coach in 1999 and he would be at the helm for the next ten seasons. It was around this time that the Seahawks became a consistently competitive team. Seattle made the playoffs in five consecutive seasons under Holmgren, including a trip to Super Bowl XL versus the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Despite losing their first Super Bowl appearance, the team stayed in the playoff hunt until 2008. After two down years, Seattle reloaded with head coach Pete Carroll in 2010. Thanks to a dominant defense, bruising running back and a wise-beyond-his-years quarterback, the Seahawks claimed their first title in 2013 over Peyton Manning and the Broncos.
Given the quick maturation of the team and the large quantity of youth, the Seattle Seahawks seem primed for a dominant run over the next several years. If they can add more Super Bowl wins, the market for the marquee players, like Marshawn Lynch, Russell Wilson and Richard Sherman, will take off.
