1998-99 Skybox Autographics Allen IversonThe Philadelphia 76ers may not have seen much success in recent years, but three NBA titles and some of the biggest names in NBA history make the Sixers incredibly desirable for collectors.

The franchise got its start in 1946 as the Syracuse Nationals of the National Basketball League (NBL). Within a few seasons, the NBL merged with the Basketball Association of America to form the NBA. The Nationals would remain very competitive, winning a title in 1955, but as the league gave way to superstar-led teams, Syracuse began to fall behind their large market competition. However, the could still be counted on to make some noise in the playoffs.

In 1963, the Syracuse Nationals were purchased and moved to Philadelphia to replace the Philadelphia Warriors, who moved to San Francisco and would later become the Golden State Warriors. The new Philadelphia team was named the 76ers and wasted no time acquiring a superstar as they brought in Wilt Chamberlain from the Warriors. The team produced one of the most impressive overall seasons in 1966-67 and won the title with a roster featuring Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham, Hal Greer and Chet Walker.

Despite this success and plenty of elite players, the 76ers started to fall apart when the traded Wilt Chamberlain to the Lakers for very little in return. This would kick off nearly a decade of mediocrity. However, the team was able to acquire the contract for Julius Erving in 1976 and returned to NBA relevance. They later added Moses Malone and won their third title in 1983.

Charles Barkley was the next basketball star to lead the 76ers, but after eight years and no titles, he was traded to Phoenix. Since then, the team has seen a return to the finals in 2001 with their last true superstar, Allen Iverson, as well as posting one of the worst stretches in NBA history, when they lost 26 consecutive games during the 2013-14 season.

The Philadelphia 76ers have now been in rebuilding mode for several years, stockpiling picks and young talent. Collectors and fans hope that a few years down the road, these players will develop into stars and usher in a new period of dominant Sixers' basketball.
