Overview
Losing a Hall of Fame quarterback is usually enough to derail a franchise in the short-term, but the Indianapolis Colts survived the transition and the future looks much brighter as a result. Thanks to several strong quarterbacks in their history, the Colts are a top destination for collectors.
The franchise was originally created as the Baltimore Colts in 1953. After a slow start, the Colts emerged as one of the best teams in the time before the AFL-NFL merger. Baltimore claimed three championships during that period and were carried by quarterback Johnny Unitas. They later added their first Super Bowl win in 1970. Although the team remained formidable into the late-1970s, things soon unraveled and fan interest began to drop. In 1984, the Colts were relocated to Indianapolis.
While interest in the team increased in Indianapolis, the performance on the field did not. The team slightly improved over time, but the franchise saw a complete reversal of fortune after 1998 thanks to the drafting of Peyton Manning. The Colts would make the playoffs in 11 of the next 12 seasons, including a Super Bowl win in 2006. In 2011, Manning missed the entire year due to injury and the Colts finished 2-14. Again looking at the number one overall pick, Indianapolis elected to let Manning go so they could begin the Andrew Luck era.
Now with Andrew Luck under center, the Colts have continued their winning ways. Luck looks to be one of the next superstars in the league and makes it likely that the Colts will remain near the top of the NFL for years to come.
