Chicago Blackhawks Collecting and Fan Guide
Overview
The Chicago Blackhawks are one of the founding members of the NHL and the organization originated in 1926. As an "Original Six" team, they have a long and storied history and a strong collecting base.
The team was competitive from its inception, winning two Stanley Cups in the 1930s, and boasted some of the top talent in the league, with names like Johnny Gottselig, Cy Wentworth and Charlie Gardiner. During the 1950s, the Blackhawks landed top draft picks Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull and Pierre Pilote, who would all eventually become Hall of Fame players. They were also able to acquire seasoned veterans in Ted Lindsay and Glenn Hall, who went on to have their own Hall of Fame careers.
In 1959 and 1960, the Blackhawks were ousted in the postseason by the Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens went on to hoist the Stanley Cup in each of those years. The teams faced off again in 1961. However, this time, it was the Blackhawks that prevailed, winning their first Stanley Cup since the 1937-38 season.
What could have been a dynasty never materialized. While the team remained a force to be reckoned with, they failed to win another championship despite making the Stanley Cup Final two more times. This began a long era of "we'll get 'em next year." The team appeared in the postseason for 28 consecutive years between 1969 and 1997. However, they only made it to the Stanley Cup Finals once during that period. The year was 1991 and they eventually lost the series to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Longtime owner and CEO, Bill Wirtz, was willing to spend just enough money on talent to keep the postseason streak alive. A team's appearance in the playoffs assured additional revenue that was never really put back into the team. As a result of the team's fiscal strategy, they would lose high-profile talent like Eddie Belfour, Jeremey Roenick and Chris Chelios to free agency or forced trades.
The team and its fan base suffered through many losing seasons during the late-1990s and into the 2000s. However, two back-to-back first round draft picks in 2006 and 2007 for Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, would soon change the team's future. Bill Wirtz's son, Rocky, took over management of the team when the team's patriarch passed away in the fall of 2007. An immediate change in culture began to take place that included a guaranteed commitment to winning the Stanley Cup in the next three years.
True to the organization's word, through crafty trades, key free agent signings, savvy selections in the draft and a coaching change, the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in the 2009-10 season, the team's first in 49 years. They would go on to win the title again in 2012-13 and made to the Wester Conference Finals in 2013-14 where they lost to the Los Angeles Kings in seven games. The team recently secured, long-term contract commitments with its core stars, ensuring the team will remain competitive for the next several years.
