2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey hits the ice with some new content and format tweaks. Of course, the set boasts the next round of Young Guns rookie cards.

Per UD, "For the first time in more than 20 years, the configuration of our flagship Upper Deck Series will see a refresh that will include notable changes to deliver an even more compelling collecting experience."

This includes an updated Hobby format with 12 cards per pack and 12 packs per box (144 cards total) to replace the standard eight cards per pack and 24 packs per box (192 cards total). Every pack now has an average of three inserts instead of one.

Brand staples Young Guns and UD Canvas are found at the same rate per Hobby box, still averaging six Young Guns and four UD Canvas cards, despite having new pack odds.

Upper Deck also noted that the same "refresh" applies to 2023-24 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey and 2023-24 Upper Deck Extended Series Hockey.

2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Base / Young Guns

Collectors can count on several differences in the 2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey checklist compared to the norm. Look for new parallels across the base set and Young Guns.

The main set sticks with 250 cards, featuring 200 veteran cards and 50 Young Guns (1:2 packs) cards. As usual, three of these are checklists (two base veterans and one Young Guns CL).

Debuts include Outburst Silver, Deluxe (#/250), Outburst Red (#/25), and Outburst Gold (1/1) parallels for the base cards and Young Guns.

The rare Outburst Gold edition may be particularly intriguing for collectors as the first one-of-one Young Guns chase parallel in the flagship product.

These come in addition to the standards: Exclusives (#/100) and High Gloss (#/10), plus the Hobby-only Clear Cut.

From there, 2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey supplies another 120 cards in the UD Canvas (1:24 packs) lineup. As is normally the case, UD Canvas Young Guns (1:24 packs) cards are part of the set.

Parallels include one-of-one Printing Plates and Hobby-only Black & White versions (Base - 1:48 packs; Young Guns - 1:144 packs).

There are also limited UD Canvas Signatures cards that are hard-signed and hand-numbered.

2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Inserts

Among the many inserts for 2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey, collectors will find returning favorites, updated insert lines and all-new themed sets.

Looking to the debuts first, 200' x 85' (1:6 packs) gives a nod to the rink while celebrating top stars and rookies. Be on the lookout for the one-of-one Black version.

Special Edition (1:5 packs) opts for an ornate style and Star Zone (1:7 packs) sticks with the vets. The Gold parallels for these are limited to 50 copies.

Another new chase appears in Star Surge (1:7 packs), focusing on young talent, which adds parallels like Red Die-Cut (1:240 packs).

Showcasing a player report card, of sorts, Teacher's Pet (1:5 packs) lists out the top abilities of each NHL student.

As for the more familiar inserts, Dazzlers is back for another year. This includes the Pink (1:144 packs) edition. The seasoned stars are up first with Series 2 offering the rookie content.

The continuation approach is the same for Honor Roll (1:3 packs), covering veterans in Series 1 and adding rookies in the Series 2 insert. The Gold parallels check in with just 25 copies.

Population Count is another returning option. While the design still resembles a slabbed card, this time the cards are done on acetate stock. The 30-card set again offers tiered print runs of 1,000 copies or less.

In addition, UD Portraits (1:7 packs) gets an update that's likely to garner some attention, and UD promises that "no two portraits are the same."
