User Rating:

Bridging the gap between old school and modern, 2018 Donruss Baseball continues to offer nostalgic designs alongside more current concepts from the collecting world. Aimed at satisfying the hit collectors, memorabilia cards and autographs combine to average three per hobby box.

A huge plus given the hype surrounding him, Shohei Ohtani autographs are confirmed in the final checklist with many options shown in the gallery below. There are also inscriptions.

UPDATE (March 13): Keep those wrappers as Panini announced a 2018 Donruss Baseball Wrapper Redemption program featuring exclusive cards.

2018 Donruss Baseball Base / Inserts

Giving fans plenty of choices beyond standard base cards, the 2018 Donruss Baseball checklist includes hobby favorites like Diamond Kings and Rated Rookie, while adding Retro 1984 subset cards and blaster-only Holo Blue parallels.

Those that appreciate image swaps or nicknames in place of official names will likely be pleased that the Variation subjects have doubled from 2017, with both past and present stars. In addition, at least one variation parallel is expected per hobby box.

Meanwhile, new insert sets include Long Ball Leaders and Out of This World for big hitters, plus the playful (and rare) Whammy! returns. There are also Foundations and Mound Marvels sets to build.

User Reviews

  1. These look awesome! Way better than the Topps design this year. I wish Panini could get an official license.

  2. Nice looking cards, set is too small should be 600 cards. Tough set to put together.

  3. Nice Looking cards – hope they would go to at least 200 cards.

  4. I don’t know how these could be any uglier than they are. Yuck!

  5. Usually a good mix of signatures. These will be HOT because of the Ohtani cards. Not crazy about the design. Could change my rating once I see the whole set of checklists.

  6. Donruss took a step up last year and it looks even better this year. Lots of Ohtani autographs to chase.

  7. Oh, boy! My cat could have designed better cards than this dodgy garbage. Truly one of the ugliest, most lackluster card designs, with even more fake sticker autographs and gimmicks, AND it will all be repeated in Optic in a few months! What’s not to love? Just more sucker bait.

  8. I don’t know if Panini is intentionally designing mid-90s looking baseball cards or they just got lazy. Either way, it is a miss for me. I don’t think Optic is going to help this design either.

  9. About 30.00 too much.

  10. Are there hot boxes. Bought 1 box and have 29 variations of the regular cards, 3 variations of the 84 donruss, 2 black & white cards and a Whammy insert.

  11. Correction after further checking and different websites I have 47 variations from 1 box plus the other mentioned above.

  12. I bought box at my local hobby shop. My big pull was a 1/1 autograph of someone I’ve never heard of. Lots of variations, also. Another regular customer bought 4 boxes and pulled an Aaron Judge auto plus two Otani inserts!

  13. 24/30 Diamond King Parallels
    18/20 Rated Rookies
    41/57 Base Variations
    22 1984 Retro Variations
    7 #’ed
    2 Patches
    2 Rookie Autos
    And an Ohtani /249

Fun to rip, not to heavy on the wallet. Got an extra patch, so a total of 4 hits. Wondering how rare are these variations? I have quite a few. Also do the 1984 patches have variations as well.

  14. On some of the 84 donruss you have the black baseball as the variation and some of the all white ball as the variation. Any update on these cards.

  15. It should be accurate.

  16. Any mention by Panini about blank back cards? Pulled a Paul Goldschmidt.

  17. They are on the checklist but nothing was stated as far as rarity.

  18. Awful product … Heritage makes this set look silly. Bought seven packs from a fresh box and got zero. Glad I did not invest in the full box. At least Heritage gives you codes to determine variations.

  19. fyi – Case Break = 17 Blank Backs

  20. Noticed the #63 card – J.A. Happ has info about Ian Happ on the back. Wondering if this is an common error card or if it’s unique. Thoughts?

  21. A fun product. Is there a difference between the cards that have a black baseball in the top left corner on the back of the cards as apposed to the ones with white baseballs?

  22. Many apply to the base variations. See our guide here – https://www.cardboardconnection.com/2018-donruss-baseball-variations-guide

  23. The story of the BIGGEST BUST CASE EVER! I am not a HUGE baseball card collector. I stick mostly to football and have always been happy with Panini products. But THIS year I decided to try and jump on the “OHTANI” bandwagon and bought an entire case of 2018 Donruss Baseball and what a HUGE disappointment. I went into this not expecting any “miracles” but seriously, in an ENTIRE case I pulled TWO (2) Ohtani’s.. 2! Not even autographed (which I COMPLETELY understand are tough pulls, but 2?!? One numbered to /999 and one to /349!) Seriously? But that’s just the beginning… 2 of the boxes had DAMAGED CARDS! Albeit they were “mostly” commons, but the last two cards in every pack in 2 boxes had their upper right hand corners MANGLED! I had to throw them all away! So lets do the math… 2 cards per pack x 24 packs per box x 2 =96 cards straight into the garbage! Next, I know PANINI promotes the boxes as “3 autographs OR memorabilia cards per box.” Why not just say the TRUTH!?! They are LOADED with basically WORTHLESS memorabilia cards and in only THREE (3) boxes out of SIXTEEN (16) did I get more than 1 autograph… THREE! Crazy… Now lets move on to the Parallels. In the ENTIRE case, I pulled 1 card numbered to /10, 4 numbered to /25, 9 numbered to /49 and all the rest into the /100’s. And even out of THAT, only 2 were autographs and nobody worth a second look! And finally, lets go back to why I even tried this in the first place… the OHTANI’s! Particularly the JAPANESE AUTOGRAPHS PANINI advertised. I find it EXTREMELY hard to believe that after almost 3 weeks since the product’s release, not ONE (1) Japanese autograph has popped up ANYWHERE! Was this a rouse? A marketing scheme to get suckers (LIKE ME) to buy this product? Several 1 of 1 autographs HAVE been pulled of the “normal” autograph… am I the only one that is even questioning the EXISTENCE of the JAPANESE Auto’s at all? Strange… very, VERY strange which makes me question the validity of the product entirely. So in conclusion, don’t ANYONE else worry about getting a BUST case because apparently I ALREADY GOT IT! By comparison, I bought THREE (3) boxes of Topps Heritage… ONLY 3. Pulled an Ohtani (non-auto) and NUMEROUS other cards which made the purchase worthwhile as well as being a FAR superior product. Disgusting, inferior and potentially fraudulent product rushed, marketed and packaged for SUCKERS like me. Sad, very, very sad.

  24. Picked up a hanger box at Target. Whats the purpose of a set with no major league license? Al Kaline and Nolan Ryan cards. come on. No wonder Panini keeps dumping set after set every week.

  25. 4 Stars, I just got a case and opened my first box. The second pack I opened I got Aaron Judge/Reggie Jackson Dual Autograph numbered to 10 so I guess its a Great start. Fun variations though the number of cards could be more.

  26. Too many variations to figure out what is what…I used to like donruss, now it looks like doodoo and way too high of a price for nothing.

  27. This product is awesome. Great price point, loaded with inserts. Panini has done an amazing job with baseball products for the last few years.

  28. Was nice until I got a hanger box. A number of cards have noticeable off center issues with Diamond Kings, Rated Rookies and black baseball variations. Has to do with the back of the cards around the middle. Either clipping in some black at the edges on the Rated Rookies and Diamond Kings, or showing white on the variations.

  29. Bought 2 blasters and 1 hanger at Walmart –
Avoid hanger as very little inserts for the amount of cards.
Here are the rough totals for what i was lucky to pull.
I pulled 5 Nickname Cards Yadi, Larry Wayne Jones, Showrea, The Ryan Express, Mr Smile and NY 12th Judicial District(Judge) Team – ALL RISE. Also got most of the Base cards for these.
    1 Jersey Card, Teoscar Hernandez
    24/28 /McCutchen Diamond King GOLD
    250/307 Brian Dozier ,
    010/500 Joe Morgan
    224/500, Adrian Beltre
    739/999-Aaron Judge All Star
    570/999 – Cory Kluber DOMINATOR
    Ohtani – ?999 Foundations Crystal

    and Several Variations
–\Really enjoyed this break and may go back to get last couple of boxes as better luck than 2 retail of Heritage got me.

  30. I found a good munbervof variations, numbered cards, signatures, etc. Enough to make itvexcitingvsnd fun to open up the packages. Found much more in 3 56 card blasters thanx I did in the Topps Series 1 blasters.

  31. base set no license but a fun set to try to put together tired of 700 cards sets like the mix of retired and current players plus in an area where there are no shops to get hobby like the fact that retail has the variations plus pulled a trout and brett career stat lines

  32. I pulled an Ohtani Diamond King #/25 with 2 patches – are these really game used? This set was released before he played any official games.

  33. Bought a few hangar packs and a blaster. The hangar packs don’t yield much (including one pack with the top 2 cards being exactly the same) but a Joe Morgan Artist Proof /10 and a B & W Benintendi. The blaster was pretty bad, but did get a few name variations and yet another Jose De Leon insert card (a diamond collection relic). Just a bunch of fodder that I have no idea what to do with.

  34. 5 stars because you actually get a decent card here and there. I am so over Heritage and breakers knowing pack sequences that the average collector has absolutely no chance of pulling a hit. I watched a break of Bowman, the guy pulled every pack out of the Jumbo box for an entire case and set the three packs containing auto’s aside. He was right every time except for the hot box. Only hits I have gotten are in retail. These dishonest breakers and store owners are pathetic.

As for Donruss, I wish they would get a License. Has anyone received their wrapper redemption packs yet?

  35. The design does not work and multi payer cards are just horrible looking.

  36. As a Tigers fan , NOT too happy. expecyed better as they were going after the 1984 look . Only 1 – 1984 Tiger in it . ( Evans ) REALLY , With the Tigers the 1984 CHAMPS ?? No 1984 cards or mention of Morris or Trammell ?? Trammell is a Sig. Sig, No mention of 1984 MVP ??
