User Rating:

Closing out the flagship collecting season, 2017 Topps Update Series Baseball is part three of the annual trilogy. Coming afterย Series 2,ย the fall set specifically features the late-season rookie options along with traded players on new teams.

The update productย sticks withย the one-hitย hobby box and a jumbo format that includes one autograph and two memorabilia cards.

2017 Topps Update Series Baseball Base

Adding another 300 base cards, the 2017 Topps Update Series Baseball checklist brings with it a similar assortment of parallels. This includes Rainbow Foil (1:10 packs), Gold (#/2017), Vintage Stock (#/99), Motherโ€™s Day Hot Pink (#/50), Fatherโ€™s Day Powder Blue (#/50), Memorial Day (#/25), Platinum (1/1), and Printing Plates (1/1). Limitedย Negative and Black (#/66) parallels are only found in Hobby or HTA Jumbo formats. In addition, Clear parallels for a handful of rookies have just ten copiesย and are exclusive to Hobby boxes.

2017 Topps Update Series Baseball Cards 1

Naturally, 2017 Topps Update Series Baseball again promisesย Short Prints and Super Short Print Variationsย to chase. The SSP cards also have limited Autograph versions.

2017 Topps Update Series Baseball Inserts

Moving to the continuation inserts, Topps Salute (1:8 packs) again makes note of the key moments from the season while 1987 Topps: Rookies, Rising Stars and Traded (1:8 packs) adds even more names to the retro-themed set. The โ€™87 insert also has Red (#/25) and Platinum (1/1) parallels.

Taking us beyond the current season, Topps All-Rookie Cup honors legendary rookie yearsย with rookie cupย reprints. Giving the elite pitchers their due respect, Untouchables is for the Cy Young winners with playoff success.

2017 Topps Update Series Baseball Cards 2

Proving not all the cardboard action happens on the diamond, MLB Network (1:36 packs) inserts expandย their coverage of those who make their living talking aboutย the sport. These, too, add Autograph versions.

2017 Topps Update Series Baseball All-Starย Hits

Getting to the hits, Update usually offersย an All-Star theme and that is again the case for 2017 Topps Update Series Baseball. Signed versions include All-Star Stitches Autographs (#/25 or less),ย All-Star Stitches Dual Autographs (#/25 or less), andย All-Star Autographed Jumbo Patchย (#/10 or less) cards. These each offer Orange (#/10 or less) and Platinum (1/1) parallels.

Also celebrating the "Midsummer Classic" are relics in the main All-Star Stitchesย set. They are found in base versions, as well as Gold (#/50),ย Orange (#/25) and Platinum (1/1) parallels, for up to 60 players. There are alsoย All-Star Stitchesย Dualย (#/25) and Tripleย (#/25) inserts to go with theย All-Star Jumbo Patchย (#/5 or less) cards.

2017 Topps Update Series Baseball Autographs / Relics

Bringing signed editions of theย various inserts, 2017 Topps Update Series Baseball includes Topps Salute Autographs and on-card 1987 Topps Baseball Autographs. The wood-based '87 design is amplified with several parallels like Glossy (#/15 or less), Wood (#/10), Ash Wood (#/5) and Birch Wood (1/1).

2017 Topps Update Series Baseball Cards 3

Only available in Hobby or Jumbo formats, the Hank Aaron Award Commemorative Patch set honors the previous winners withย Gold (#/99),ย Blackย (#/50),ย Platinum (1/1) and Autograph (#'d) parallels. Finally, there are the one-of-one Own the Name Relics (Hobby/Jumbo) and Cut Signatures.

2017 Topps Update Series Baseball Retail

Giving retail hunters an added incentive,ย 2017 Topps Update Series Baseball includes several options not found in hobby boxes. Purple base parallels are again exclusive to Toys R Us locations. In addition, Postseason Celebrationsย focuses on the playoff images of the last few years, along with Blue, Red, Silver, Gold (#/10), and Printing Plate (1/1) parallels.

MVP Award Winners is a Relic Box exclusive, adding Red (#/25), Platinum (1/1), and Autograph (#'d) versions. Offering a manufactured relic edition, the MVP Award Commemorative Medallion cards are also only found in the Relic Boxes. These have Gold (#/99), Black (#/50), Platinum (1/1) and Autograph (#'d) parallels.

Update (6/20): Topps confirmed that Cody Bellinger rookie cards and autographs can be found in theย 2017 Topps Update Series Baseball checklist.

2017 Topps Update Series Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: LOADED with rookies; variations for all; cool Untouchables insert.

Bad: Perhaps too many of the same rookie players in the base set; ease of variations kills value; stamped buybacks.

The Bottom Line:ย 2017 Topps Update Series Baseball means the close of the flagship collecting season with a huge All-Star component. Many have noticed the new surplus of variations, producing mixed reactions, and the Bellinger rookie is finally here, along with many other cards. Values may suffer but Update offers a lot.

Staff Rating:
3.3 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.5/5.0

Flagship part three equals the continuation of several designs, such as the base set, as well as 1987, MLB Network and Salute inserts. As a result, we will dive more into the new designs. As many are retail-only options, collectors will have to make some trips to find them outside of the hobby boxes. I did enjoy the leaf-themed Heroes of Autumn, and the Postseason Celebrations images are impressive.

In terms of what came in the review box, I did find the Untouchables insert very appealing. It gave me a nostalgic feel from the 1990s, and the dual images and bright colors really worked for me. The foilboard base parallels also look great and the Vintage parallel is fun. I think this is first box where I have pulled one of these.

On the other hand, we get more manufactured relics. And reprints, this time in the Topps All-Rookie Cup insert. I donโ€™t know why this has to be so common with Topps. And don't even get me started on the stamped buybacks.

Checklist: 3.0/5.0

Checklist complaints for Update almost always center around the late-season rookies left off, and this year seems to be more of an issue for the RC names bumped to 2018. While this is largely an MLB decision, it still stinks. Bellinger is the big rookie name this time, but he also has three other cards in the base set. Judge, who was a Series 1 rookie, has three base cards. For those priced out of many sets in 2017, this might be a welcome sight. But it does seem like Topps flooded the market with Update rookies.

Checklist positives include 1987 autographs for both Bellinger and Judge. Bellinger is a redemption but Judge is live.

And then thereโ€™s the variations. Iโ€™m admittedly torn on the decision to make them so common in Update. I do like that they are more accessible, but the images are not as strong as they have been in the past, and because of the 1:4 hobby pack odds, the values are minimal for most of the names and even the legends. I can appreciate the decision to go with more favorable odds, but this was an extreme jump in my opinion. Perhaps 2-3 per box would have been a better place to start. The SSP aspect was nice to offset the common SP offerings, but the 125-card set also features the same overkill nature of the base set with many players having multiple short prints. Bellinger has three more cards here, bringing his base and variations total to seven cards in one set.

Value: 3.0/5.0

Because it offers so many rookies and variations, 2017 Topps Update Series Baseball has good collecting value, but the same canโ€™t be said about monetary value. Perhaps time will help, but even at the $50-60 range for hobby boxes (at the time of the review), the one hit and the rest of the box contents are not likely to yield much unless you luck out. A lower-than-expected production could change that, but that doesnโ€™t appear to be the case.

The Fun Factor: 3.75/5.0

As someone who enjoys a collecting experience as much as the act of opening cards, 2017 Topps Update Series Baseball provides a huge number of cards and solid variety. If you didnโ€™t collect Series 1 or Series 2, Update is even more exciting. Sure, there are a lot of things that could be better, but from a purely fun aspect, Update is a decent set, in my opinion.

It’s Sept. 2019 and I got super lucky and found almost full box that’s been sitting on the far end of a counter in a local bookstore. It’s been just sitting there for 2 years now collecting dust until today. I ask the store owner how much a pack he said $1.00 apiece. So needless to say i bought ever pack. Their were 18 packs left and outta them I pulled 3 Judge RC, 3 Bellinger RC, 1 Yoan Moncada RC, 1 Luke Voit RC, 2 Ian Happ RC, 1 Mitch Haniger RC, 1 David Dahl RC, 1 Dansby Swanson RC, 1 Bradley Zimmer RC, 1 Yulieski Gurriel, 1 Luis Castillo RC & 1 Jesse Winker RC, 1 Orlando Arica RC, 1 Amid Garrett RC plus a stack of other Rookies and All-Stars. Sadly there was no Bregman RC, Benintendi RC, Glasnow RC, Chapman RC or Mancini RC but nevertheless I still made out like a bandit. After opening these packs for the first time tonight I’d have to say the packs in this product are loaded so I’m giving it 5 stars. The beautiful thing is he has a box of 2015 & 2016 Topps Update in there too, so I’m going back tomorrow to grab those.

I give it 3 stars. Lots of decent rookies, but just so many of them. I like the SPs. My question though is this: Are there any autos that are hard signed and not sticker autos? I received a Redemption of a Bellinger 1/1 Topps Salute Autograph and am hoping it is not a sticker autograph. Topps has yet to return it to me. Is there anyone that knows? It would be greatly appreciated.

You can update you description of retail Topps 2017 update series. I just got my hands on a retail box which has 24 packs with 12 cards per pack. I am assuming it is retail since the side panel has “LOOK FOR EXCLUSIVE POSTSEASON CELEBRATIONS INSERT CARDS!”

Thanks for that link Trey on the Topps Rediscover” cards. However, shouldn’t these cards still be in the checklist since they are actually card inserts?

Is there no actual way to get the information needed to be able to provide the specific inserts of these cards in this 2017 Topps Update Series? Is that the problem as to why they aren’t listed in the checklist under a “Topps Rediscover” insert heading? Thanks again Trey.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

These are original buybacks from earlier sets across the entire Topps history. There is no checklist for the stamped cards because one was never released. Every other insert is included in the checklist.

Trey, I just pulled another one of these “REDISCOVER TOPPS” insert cards & this one is of Rance Mulliniks from the Toronto Blue Jays. Again, not numbered & the card on the back is #336 & at the bottom it’s a reprint from 1985 Topps.

So, obviously there is a set of these “REDISCOVER TOPPS” insert cards because that’s 2 so far in 10 packs opened. One a reprint from 1993 Topps & another from 1985 Topps. Thanks.

I recently bought a hobby box of this 2017 Topps Update Series. I pulled an insert card that is not listed from the Inserts listed above. It’s a reprint of Steve Farr from the Yankees. The card has “REDISCOVER TOPPS” stamped in foil down the right side of the card. It IS NOT numbered.

On the back of the card it’s #717 & at the bottom of the card is says “1993 The Topps Company”. This would mean it’s a reprint of a 1993 card but there is nothing listed about these type of cards from above nor have I found anything on the net about these type of inserts.

Trey, you have any idea what this/these reprint cards are about & not listed in the checklist here or anywhere else? Thanks.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

The Rediscover buybacks were in many of the 2017 sets. They are actual cards from earlier sets that are stamped and reissued in packs, not reprints. More details here – https://www.cardboardconnection.com/2017-topps-rediscover-ultimate

Almost two years into the hobby and have recently received two bad boxes. One box was a 2017 Update series and one was a 2018 series one. Topps has already resolved my issues and all so that isnt why im here.

In one of my Topps 2017 Update series boxes, i received 2017 players in 1960, 1982, and 1992 styles. I cannot find these cards in the checklists for any 2017 products. Can someone please help me out in locating a checklist for these cards? I was going to turn to a forum for help but i was already here on Cardboard Connections so i figured i would ask the group here. Ive never posted here before so i hope any responses will come with an email notification. thank you

This set is okay at best. The so-called SP Ian Happ US 10 card seems to be very abundant, they may have made 10 less cards than the standard US 10 card. The SSP Ian Happ US 10 card however seems to be pretty rare. Does anybody know the code number on the back of the app US 10 SSP card?

Has anyone noticed or contacted Topps about the print quality on the update series and why it is so poor? If you look at the back of the update series cards, mainly those with blue backs, many of them have print lines going through them and they are extremely obvious. In some cases the cards look like they have been multiple print/scanner lines going through them. I used to see them once in a while in previous Topps issued cards but I cannot open a pack of either retail or hobby and not get cards that have these lines going through them top to bottom on the back. This includes both SSP and SP. If anyone noticed and contacted Topps I would love to hear what they say about it.

Stu
Stu

Reply to Casey: When I contacted Topps they said that they were errors and that they weren’t obligated to provide replacements with autographs. They said nothing else and as I already received a relic card in the box I bought I didn’t feel compelled to press them on the matter. Whether it is deliberate error, I don’t know. I suspect someone screwed up.

casey
casey

It seems there are a few error cards.

Take the babe ruth variation of card us166. On the back it says us166 but under that it says series 2 but it should say update series.

Regarding these cards that are supposed to have signatures on them but are bare. Called Topps and got what seems like now a same stock answer from them. I almost bought a Haniger plain card but when I went to the other listings from this seller, he had at least 7 or 8 others listed. And NO Other Update product. Just seemed fishy to me. Can anyone shed some light as to whether these are true errors cards inserted by mistake, whether they were printed and inserted in place of the regular cards or something slipped out the back door of Topps. Appreciate any information. I don’t know why Topps can’t be more forthcoming with information sometimes. Thanks.

Except for the different sp photos, nothing exciting about the issue/product. And this signature/no signature fiaco doesn’t help either….

Stu
Stu

Follow up to my earlier post regarding the error autograph cards (no signature on them). Topps responded back to an inquiry and said they were a printing area and that they will not be providing replacement autographs. Fair enough because I did get the box’s promised hit inside. But am starting to see some of these cards for sale on internet for $50.00. Still curious if it is a limited print run error or wide spread. So far seems limited.

Corey P
Corey P

I gave it 3 stars because I am still deciding. One thing that I’m puzzled by is the fact that they have a Mitch Haniger card as a Diamondback and a Taijuan Walker card as a Diamondback. These two players were in the same trade that took place way back in November ’16. Moncada was actually traded in December, but his Topps Opening Day has him in a White Sox Jersey. Now this is called an “Update” series, yet Haniger has Topps Series 1 or 2 as a Mariner. And after opening just 17 packs so far, I’ve gotten 7 different Judge/Bellinger cards. Why does Topps put the “RC” symbol on all their cards, but not the Home Run Derby cards. Can’t they just put the ALL-Star Logo on the Base Card. Is a whole set of All-Star cards necessary?

TB
TB

Collectors and novice chasing Cody Bellinger or Aaron Judge disregard these comments. The Topps baseball Updates absolutely JUNK. The various JUNK inserts become a significant distraction from the most collectable cards scarcely commingling among the proliferation of JUNK. Topps series 1 & 2 acceptable JUNK with collectable players. 2017 Topps Updates unacceptable JUNK with surreptitious collectable players. Topps do better or step aside. Epic disappointment with all the JUNK.

Dave
Dave

Wow – what a box of nothing I received when I bought the Topps 2017 Update set. I remember in the 80s the update set that came out at Christmas only include players new to their team to start the season that just ended…but that was before we had actual technology that allowed things to move faster. I can’t tell you how excited I was as a Mets fan to see cards of Tommy Milone and Neil Ramirez, June castoffs we signed to plug some gaps, over stiffs like #1 prospect Amed Rosario or Dom Smith. Or fan faves like Bruce, Granderson, Walker, Reed, and Duda in their new uniforms. WTF was the point of this set? Do I need 45 All-Star cards? How about you do like you did in the 70s and just put an all-star designation on a guy’s base card and actually reflect what happens in baseball. Man this set was a disgrace.

kurt
kurt

what ARE the print run numbers for the so called short print autograph parallels. see a lot on ebay.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Kurt: We have no print runs, and likely will never get an official number from Topps, but the Base SP Autograph hobby odds are 1:3,796 packs.

kurt
kurt

agree with people that bellinger is or has to be double or triple printed. my hobby box I got 6 bellinger rookies AND a short print bellinger auto parallel. on top of that a Bellinger all star stitches all in same box. Beckett values will of course be high but reality they won’t be. and way too many photo variations and the HOF variations are easy. unlike previous years.

Stu
Stu

Anyone encounter SP cards stamped with “Topps certified autograph” on front and back but no signature on the card. I bought a hobby box and received 9 of these cards. All SPs, no signature stickers on the cards. Based on the gambling stats on the wrapper, this would be appx the right number for ordinary SPs, not the SP autograph cards. So far have not found anyone else mentioning this problem. I have written off to Topps and waiting for response

I really like the cards but have some concerns. The prices for the hobby and jumbo were much more than the recent years of cards. I understand there are a fair amount of RC but I totally notcied that there are a TON of Judge,Bellinger and Mocada cards as examples. I got a 6 ct jumbo case and I have some worries that these cards and others were mass produced and the values will be junk. Also a question…does every jumbo pack have an SP? Because EVERY jumbo pack I opened had an SP. Granted I got almost every awesome SP possible(not sure about SSP since I just finished opeing everything) but if they’re that easy, their value is going to stink long term. I got great Aaron relics in Trout,Harper,Bryant,1 gold and reg Miggy. A 3/5 sweet relic of Carlos Martinez, (all patch). The autos…meh. Also a pink harper, black Kluber, 2 gold Bellingers and great 87’s. I love the product but am very afraid of the ease of getting good card will really knock the value on top of the high cost of the boxes. Jumbos were about $15 more per than previous years. But I’m optimistic for now.

Fred

Any idea what retail inserts are at Target and what retail inserts are a Wal Mart.

I have not seen any 2017 update product in any of the Baltimore area WalMarts.

Any idea if WalMart is not in the update market this season?

Wow, I usually go pretty heavy on update, but just going through the list of RC’s and there’s one A level rookie and a small handful of B level rookies, and the rest are no-namers and nobodies. There’s not much potential in this set, unless the production run is low.

Was hoping to see one final Bronson Arroyo in a Reds uniform for old times sake. He rejoined the team and started 14 games in 2017. Was also expecting to see a Scooter Gennett. He was included as a Brewer in Series 1. Should have made the Update set as a Red, where he played 141 games and had an outstanding season, 2.4 WAR.

Topps must really hate the Detroit Tigers and the Oakland A’s. Why else would they omit the 1968 Tigers and the Oakland dynasty of ’72,’73,’74 in the World Series subset? Oh yeah got to get their precious Yankees in instead.

For BREWERS:
Orlando Arcia has a rookie debut card – his debut was in 2016.
Lewis Brinson played less than 1 month in the big leagues – should have waited till 2018.
Upset that there is no Brewers:
Neil Walker
Eric Sogard
Manny Pina
Stephen Vogt

Rookie Debut cards need to go

To all those not liking the checklist, that is NOT a Topps choice. The MLB Players Association gets to make many of these decisions. Hence, you don’t see Panini making rookies of these guys before Topps. Also, and this is hard for most to remember, but the 2017 set is supposed to be a recap/recollection of the previous season, with previous season highlights, awards, leaders, stats, etc…Update does add some more recent things such as the AllStar game, but the All-Star Game is right around Topps cut-off /deadline for this product, so trades, etc after that are not able to get squeezed in. So many factors beyond the manufacturers control yet they get all the blame.

More of the same, too many worthless, pointless inserts, flash and dazzle and nothing new and once again, fake patch cards. No one should buy any product with fake cards in it. I pay for real stuff, I want real stuff. No, thanks, Topps. I’ve wasted enough on your overproduced garbage.

Well when I was little the old 80’s & 90’s Topps Traded sets you only saw rookies, players who switched teams during the previous offseason and new managers that were hired during the offseason. Players who were traded during the season didn’t appear in the new uniforms till the following years set. So this set is pretty much a throwback to those sets. I agree though the allstar cards, rookie debuts, home run derbys and even combo cards should go. I think the set should be rookies, traded players and other veterans who didn’t get a series 1 or Series 2 card.

Consumer two cents. Could make a second update series next year that involves all the players that got traded over the year. Including the players that get traded in August (waiver traded deadline) could add another 150 cards to that set if you did it this year everyone would be wanting to buy a card if Justin Verlander in the Astros or Jay Bruce on the Indians. Would make your consumers happier

Why no trade deadline cards? Iโ€™ve been anxiously waiting for Sonny Gray on the Yankees and Yu Darvish on the Dodgers, now I have to wait until next year to get them. Iโ€™ve been collecting since I was a kid and this is my favorite series when it came out because of the cards of the traded players. Disappointing to say the least. Really wanted to get these cards. Hopefully this changes next year

I will echo the last commenter except I will lose “kind of.” This checklist is beyond disappointing. I always used to look forward to Update to see the first cards in new uniforms of players. Instead we get Home Run Derby cards, too many All Star cards, and Rookie Debuts of players already in Series 1 or 2.

The Rookie Debuts are among my least favorite cards in any set ever. David Dahl has an RD card despite not playing in 2017. What exactly is that “Updating?” Pat Neshek, a Rockies pick up at the deadline, has not one, but two cards as a Phillie.

Just horrible.

Checklist is kind of disappointing no deadline traded players ๐Ÿ˜’ can’t wait for my hobby box to show in the next week or two anxious to get my hands on the base Topps Bellinger RC and new batch of ’87 inserts.

When is the checklist coming out ?

Ryan: It’s usually around one week before release.

Devers is actually a rookie. Like he will not be eligible for ROY next year but heโ€™s not in the product designed for this specific late call up set? What a joke! Set looks fine and Cards will be cool but the actual checklist is a joke!

Jamison

So if Topps doesn’t put a rookie of Devers or Rhys in this product maybe Donruss should… get one leg up on topps. Devers has played enough games to warrant a rookie card for 2017. Topps is always trying to make a buck and hold the hobby hostage.

Will Aaron Judge have an auto in these hobby boxes? Thanks for your time.

Will Hoskins be in this?

Trey Treutel

Terry: Topps already announced the Hoskins rookie is coming in 2018 Series 1 โ€“ https://www.cardboardconnection.com/2018-topps-series-1-baseball-cards

If he is in Update, it won’t be an RC.

Any idea about rookies like Devers being in the set?

So are you absolutely positive that there’ll be short prints and not just super short prints? I tend to collect the short prints but the super short prints are too x pensive
Thx!
P.S. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ on a great site! Keep up the good work!

James: Thanks, James. Both SP and SSP cards were specifically referenced by Topps. But there are no guarantees until the product releases.
