Product Details
Continuing the high-end Star Wars product for another year, 2017 Topps Star Wars Masterwork brings quality elements to collectors in a hobby-only format. Every four-pack box delivers four hits with at least two being signed.
Similar to the 2016 product, every mini-box pack contains one hit from an assortment including autographs, cel relics, medallions and sketch cards.
2017 Topps Star Wars Masterwork Base / Inserts
Traveling across the expansive franchise with 72-point stock, the 100-card base set adds 25 character Short Prints along with several parallels. The colorful options take the form of Blue (2 per pack), Green (#/99), Purple (#/50), Gold (#/25), Red (1/1), and Printing Plate (1/1) editions.
Building on that are the new insert sets with Adventures of R2-D2, Evolution of the Rebel Alliance and Hall of Heroes. Parallels enter the fray here, as well, including Rainbow Foil, Canvas, Wood, Metal, Gold-Tinted Metal and Printing Plates (1/1).
2017 Topps Star Wars Masterwork Autographs
Promising two per box, the signed cards in the 2017 Topps Star Wars Masterwork checklist exude quality and go deep into the history of Star Wars. Tapping into the original trilogy and prequels, newer film subjects are also featured, including actors from Rogue One, The Force Awakens, The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels.
In addition to the Base Autographs are limited Rainbow Foil (#/50), Canvas (#/25), Wood (#/10), Silver Framed (#/10 or less), and Gold Framed (1/1) parallels. There are also Autographed Pen Relic cards with a piece of the actual pen used to sign the card.
More signed inserts come in the Dual Autograph, Triple Autograph and Quad Book Autograph sets.
2017 Topps Star Wars Masterwork Hits
Of course, 2017 Topps Star Wars Masterwork also has a variety of other premium cards to pull. Animation Cel cards contain relics from Star Wars: Droids and Star Wars: Ewoks while Film Strip cards incorporate cels from the live-action releases. Sketch cards and parallels bring more to the table and the hits close with manufactured Droid Medallions.
UPDATE (7/5): Topps revealed that Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin Skywalker (a.k.a. teen Darth Vader) in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, has 2017 Topps Star Wars Masterwork autographs. Hayden Christensen autographs will also be found in other Topps Star Wars products. He has not signed for a Topps set since 2006 Star Wars Evolution Update.

2017 Topps Star Wars Masterwork Product Review

Good: Beautiful cards; many on-card autographs; most key signers are included; multi-signer card list is pretty huge.
Bad: Base autographs not numbered; overall signers list is questionable; medallions count as a box hit.
The Bottom Line: No longer the top product in the galaxy thanks to Stellar Signatures, 2017 Topps Star Wars Masterwork is still an impressive set that is much more accessible to the average collector. While the cards look fantastic, the price point and value can be an issue, especially for unnumbered base autographs and commemorative medallion hits.

Hard to beat at any price point, the base design in 2017 Topps Star Wars Masterwork is fantastic. The thick stock and foil-enhanced layout gives a true high-end feel and the glossy images really seem to pop off the card.
Although almost equally appealing from a design standpoint, for me, none of the standard inserts really provide a lasting impression, but they are different enough to help mix up the card variety. While I do normally look for design choices when I open a box of cards, this is an instance where I don't quite understand the need for three different base inserts (Adventures of R2-D2, Evolution of the Rebel Alliance, Hall of Heroes). I'd rather these be saved for Journey sets (or lower-end retrospective sets). I also found the parallel print runs a little odd as Adventures of R2-D2 has Rainbow Foil parallels numbered to 565, which is more than double any other set.
The base autographs fit well into the design lineup as a whole, and the foil pattern on the sides of each card is just enough to also stand out on its own. Obviously the on-card autographs are great, especially since the multi-signed cards are still stickers. The framed parallels really kick things into high gear, and make for an awesome chase.
On the other hand, there are the medallions. These extra thick cards are the most disappointing part of the set, in my opinion. Not only are they visually unimpressive, but they count as the hit in a $40-50 mini box. Also, given the considerable weight increase, it is very easy to identify the box that has one. I get that Topps needs to fill out the product and everything can't be an autograph, but this is not the way to go. I much more enjoyed the film cel relics, which have a direct connection to the franchise and are unique.

This includes on-card options for Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker, Gwendoline Christie, Harrison Ford, Hayden Christensen, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, plus multi-signed cards including Carrie Fisher and Kenny Baker. However, with over 60 subjects, the other names in the lineup are more mixed and nearly a third of the list comes from the animated shows.
Another problem is the lack of transparency in terms of rarity. Between the three autographs from the review box, not one was numbered. Although a breakdown was not provided, it is probably safe to assume the most desirable subjects are the most limited, and the cards without print runs (usually the lesser names) are quite plentiful. At this price, all signed cards should be numbered so we can get a true sense of the release.
As far as the checklist goes, there is still a lot of filler. This is a set that needs only base, base parallels and hits. There has to be another idea besides medallion cards as long as they are treated as a box hit.
Among the new options, I liked the inclusion of the Source Fabric Material cards. Although "sourced from the pre-treated fabric used to create this Star Wars character costume" is not the most exciting disclaimer, they still have a more real connection than manufactured relics. They are also a bonus hit, which means they are inserted in addition to the four hits per box.
Value: 2.75/5.0
Checking in at about $170-200 per box (at the time of this review), you are paying a decent price for each of the four hits. That only works if you are getting enough value overall because you know the medallion box is going to be on the lower side. The chance for a bonus hit does help value, as obviously does the chance to pull Ford or Ridley autographs. Still, you are gambling heavily at this box price.
The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0
Even though the hits from the review box were not much in terms of value, I found the experience quite fun. I'm a sucker for premium base cards and really enjoyed the film cel relic. It was also cool to pull a signature for Warwick Davis (as Weeteef Cyu-Bee from Rogue One), a renowned actor from several films, including many roles in the Star Wars universe. There was also a fifth hit as one pack/mini-box delivered an autograph and a cel relic. That can't turn this box into a winner, but the fun was there in spite of the weaker results.

i purchased 2 cases of this last year for a little fun. There were several key pulls including:
1. 1/1 print plate (black) of Admiral Ackbar Hall of Heroes set
2. Serial Number 1/5 Gold Dual Autograph card of John Boyega and Gwendoline Christie
3. Red (1/1) true 1 of 1 of base card #46 of Lando Calrissian
4. An incredible sketch card of Anakin Skywalker in transition to Darth Vader by Huey Truong
5. An Autographed medallion card of Freddie Prinze, Jr. numbered 05/10
6. A silver frame autograph of Tiya Sircar as Sabine from Star Wars Rebels
Plus, I got several other impressive hits. However, I didn’t get the autograph I sought of Daisy. But, I did have a couple of very respectable cases. I have somewhat noticed that Topps had hot cases and some that were not so hot. Those that were not so hot, usually had a major pull or two in it such as a huge signer and/or a ridiculously impressive sketch or other very limited card.
I was unsuccessful in receiving an answer from Topps about the total production run of these cards. Hint: it’s not many! I am curious to know how many base set and short print cards were produced for each base card and a breakdown of the autographs such as you have posted for the 2016 series of this Topps Star Wars Masterwork release. The stated odds of pulling a unique 1/1 base set red parallel card (such as the Lando I pulled) is 1 in 590 miniboxes. If none of these red 1/1 parallel cards were made for the short print cards (76-100), the stated odds work out to approximately one per 18 to 19 cases. This suggests that approximately 1382 to 1383 cases of this product were created and sold.
