Product Details

User Rating:

2017 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball showcases all the elements collectors have come to expect from the retro release. Of course, the series 2 product again utilizes the 1968 Topps design but with modern elements like an autograph or relic per hobby box.

2017 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball Base / Parallels

Providing an update to the main Heritage set, 2017 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball adds 225 base cards for rookie call-ups and traded players with numbering going from #501 to #725. The final 25 cards (#701-725) are Base Short Prints (1:3 packs). Parallels follow the primary set with Blue Bordered (50 copies - Hobby), and the somewhat tricky Bright Yellow Backs (25 copies), Gray Backs (10 copies) and Flip Stock (5 copies - Hobby).

Partial base parallels include Minis (#/100) and Chrome (#'d). The chromium cards also come in Refractor (#/568), Blue Bordered (#/68), Gold Bordered (#/5 - Hobby), and SuperFractor (1/1). The Hot Box Refractor parallel is only found in random Hot Boxes at a rate of one per pack.

Variations

Also like the earlier '17 Heritage set, the 2017 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball variations take multiple paths. This includes subtle changes for Error and Trade variations along with the more obvious, and valuable, Throwback Uniform image variations. Exclusive to hobby formats are the Action Image and Team Name Color variations.

2017 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball Autographs / Autograph Relics

Catering to collectors, the hard-signed Real One Autograph inserts are signed in blue while Special Edition (hand #/68 or less) displays red ink. Real One Dual Autograph cards (Hobby) double the fun with two on-card signatures. There are also new Nolan Ryan Highlights Autograph inserts which use the '68 design to celebrate the career of the pitching legend.

2017 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball Cards 1

Clubhouse Collection Autograph Relic and Clubhouse Collection Dual Autograph Relic cards (Hobby) both add a memorabilia piece with the signature. Each has a hobby-only Patch (1/1) parallel, as well. Focusing on top baseball players and celebrities of the year, 1968 Cut Signature is another one-of-one chase.

2017 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball Relics

Continuing the Clubhouse Collection line are base Relics and Gold (#/99) parallels. Clubhouse Collection Dual Relic (hand #/68), Triple Relic (hand #/25) and Quad Relic inserts (hand #/10) go to the next level with more players per card and lower print runs. In addition, every Clubhouse Collection relic features a one-of-one Patch version, only found in hobby formats.

Inserts / Box Loaders

If you still don't have enough to collect in 2017 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball, there are multiple standard inserts. Choices include 2016 Award Winners, multi-player Combo Cards, and 2017 Rookie Performers. Then & Now makes comparisons between 2017 and 1967 while Nolan Ryan Highlights presents collectors with a hobby-exclusive homage to the Hall of Famer.

Putting a topper on 2017 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball, hobby-only box loaders consist of 1968 Ad Panel, 1968 Poster (50 copies), and stamped 1968 Topps Originals. There are also 1968 Poster Box Loader Autographs (hand #/10) with on-card signatures.

2017 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: More manageable number of short prints; Bellinger rookie cards; hard-signed autographs.

Bad: Very little new options compared to main Heritage; variations keep pushing the limits without adding much.

The Bottom Line: The update to 2017 Heritage, High Number is just that and nothing more. While the set does not break new ground in any aspect, it does provide a fresh group of rookies and traded players. As a result, it’s not the most exciting product to open, but it has a lot of choices and a chance for some nice hits.

Staff Rating:
3.8 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.75/5.0

Sticking with the ’68 design, the base look again features the distinct border. Other familiar aspects with design include the standard parallels, Chrome versions and minis.

Naturally, the Real One Autograph cards with on-card signatures are always a welcome sight. Other than the continuation of a few retail-only sets, insert choices include the Rookie Performers, which are very similar to the previous New Age Performers, and the Now and Then, as opposed to the main Then and Now from Heritage. The white-bordered Award Winners does stand out from the crowd, but the Nolan Ryan Highlights set is a bit harder to pick out as it uses the base design with different images from his career.

Frankly, there is not much here to discuss from a design perspective since it is very similar to the primary set. I would still think more of an effort can be made to give this set an injection of newness. I get that it is retro-themed, but take the variations another direction versus the status quo. Maybe dive more into the orignal set with modern takes about Hall of Fame players from that period or perhaps highlight subjects who were left off the 1968 checklist.

Checklist: 3.75/5.0

With just 225 total cards compared to the 500-card behemoth in the main Heritage set, the 2017 Topps Heritage High Number checklist is quite moderate. This includes 25 short prints but that comes way down from 100 in the primary set. For set collectors, this is much easier to work with.

Although it is typically the case to see a lot of young players in the auto checklist for sets like these, the Real One Autograph lineup seems a little too heavily geared to rookies. Sure, there are a few big stars (Jeter, Beltre, Koufax, etc…), and Bellinger is here after missing the first Heritage, but this isn’t the strongest crop, and no Judge is another knock against the set.

Value: 4.0/5.0

With hobby prices around $70 at the time of the review, the 2017 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball value is decent considering the one-hit-per-box format is the same as the main Heritage, which is double the price. However, most of that is due to Judge. So, it’s certainly more affordable, it’s just that you can get a basic jersey relic as your only hit and the rookie-heavy autograph checklist makes the big-name players much less likely. Still, while the high-end potential is lessened, there is also less risk at this price, and you have Cody Bellinger base rookies and autographs. Plus, those elusive Throwbacks continue to drive high prices.

The Fun Factor: 3.75/5.0

I admit that these sets are harder for me to appreciate as they mainly feel like a rehash. That is doubly true since Heritage High Number features a previous design. The nostalgia is certainly there for those who were part of the first run in 1968, but it’s just not as exciting the second time around for 2017 when there is nothing really to set it apart other than an updated checklist. I just wish it had something unique. For instance, Update is the third yearly iteration of flagship, but they use the All-Star relics to set it apart from the other two. It's a little difference, but that's really all I am looking for here.

Exactly what I needed for info. Thanks, Trey. I indeed always go by the back codes, so looks like I’m gonna have to go digging after I feel confident in what’s 100% sure a “bright yellow!” :-)

Michael Zink
Michael Zink

Opened several boxes last year, but was unaware and unable to find ANY info on these “bright yellow backs.” Am I missing where the guide for these is? If there is none, something should be explained on how to identify them. Are they serial #/25? Do they have the usual different final code digits on the back? Are there versions of every player in the set? How do I distinguish one from a regular card in the set that may just happen to be slightly brighter? And anyone know of the odds, either???

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Bright Yellow Back odds are listed on the pack – 1:205. Codes are the same as the base and it’s a full base parallel. They are simply brighter than the standard yellow, which can look a little orange-ish in comparison. There are reportedly 25 copies for each, but they are not numbered, which is why it says 25 copies under the base parallels. Here is a good image of the difference: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2017-HERITAGE-HIGH-BRIGHT-YELLOW-BACK-605-SHELBY-MILLER-ARIZONA-DIAMONDBACKS/162675311167?hash=item25e034423f%3Ag%3AMWEAAOSwsPlZvErZ&_sacat=0&_nkw=2017+heritage+high+bright&_from=R40&rt=nc&LH_TitleDesc=0%7C0

Four stars because of poor card collation. I just opened a full case of this product and the amount of duplicates per box is unacceptable. Besides that Heritage is my favorite Topps product these days as the base sets have become so boring. I miss the days of looking forward to the new card design. The 2018 set, if you just do a quick take is not much different from 2017.

Anyways, I’ve always liked the ’68 design. The first vintage cards I had as a kid back in the mid 80’s. This year is much better than last year. The blurry photos from last year really took away from the great ’67 design. The actual ’67 cards are even more clear. I did pull a Bellinger auto, flip stock and variations. I like the throwback uni variants. The bright backs are almost impossible to decipher from the base as the yellow is much brighter compared to low numbers. My first pack I actually thought I got a very hot pack as it appeared every card was a bright back. I am thinking this was intentional as the ’68 set is the same way but not every card. The blue border variant cards are some of the best looking variants in 2017. It works well with the burlap design. I have found several other variant cards no checklist yet has any listed. I am going to compile a list with pics for verification to the moderator. I have it started but it is not complete. Overall, this is as mentioned my favorite product from Topps these days. I am old school, I am tired of all the gloss and foil. Make a product kids can afford, get kids back to collecting again. Topps, if they had any business sense would keep their base product along the lines of how how Heritage is done, card stock wise. Keep variants and inserts. Issue Topps Chrome in lower numbers for the collectors looking to make profit, keep Bowman brands the same as they are and you have a great line up of cards. Bring back tamper proof packs, lose the thick cards so the losers who pack search can no longer measure packs or weigh they. Make it kid friendly again and use the Chrome for the upper end collectors or guys trying to make a living selling this stuff. Even though I think Optic Football is great, get a football card product again. The amount of sets made for baseball is just overkill. The autograph sets are getting boring. The relic cards have been done into the ground. That is one insert that needs to go. No more bat or uni relics. Autos, color, photo variants, design and error variants are plenty. That’s my take, Topps only needs Base, Chrome, Heritage & Archives, keep Bowman the way if is and you’ve got a great line-up. Do it before it’s all digital as I fear that is where it’s heading.

Love the design, variety of inserts and quality of autographs.
In two boxes got a Luke Weaver real one auto, Jharel Cotton16/68 red ink auto and a 1968 baseball flashback Jim Palmer relic auto 1/1 that I don’t find listed in your checklist? Also had other nice inserts as well.

I just pulled a Johnny Bench 68 RC auto from a $9.99 pack at Target

Shannon

Love it and lucky too. My son talked me into buying a booster box at target. Couldn’t believe when he turned to me and asked…”dad, is this one good?”, holding in his hand a red auto (hand #/25) carl Yastrzemski. Probably the most beautiful card (and way to get it) I’ve ever seen. Nice job topps.

Hammer-1

I love this product. My only question is can any of the current day players WRITE THERE NAME. I have a number of auto’s. but no one can read them. This to me is sad,if you get and older player auto. they write their name. Is it too much to ask Topps to have these cards signed with something that that can be read ??

Michael DeCurtis
Michael DeCurtis

Opened 3 boxes and as usual with this set all the chrome, refractors and short prints were duplicates. This product packaging needs a major overhaul. Shame on Topps

J Fryman
J Fryman

Love this set, look forward to it each year. Opened some blaster boxes and pulled card 640 Miguel Gonzalez in a throw back uni. Needs added to your list of variations.

Greg
Greg

I picked up a bunch of blasters and hangers from Target and from one of the hangers I pulled a “Baseball Flashbacks” auto/relic card of Rollie Fingers. These cards were in the 1st series of Heritage but this is not one of the ones listed. Is this something leftover that Topps decided to add to this set?

Josh
Josh

I am a fan of the heritage design every year. Love the old school feel.

Anyone notice that the back of the 700+ cads are a lighter yellow than the standard base? This is going to make it tough when sorting through looking for the “Bright Yellow” backs. Mistake or Intentional???

Steven
Steven

Opened a hobby box last night – great looking cards and some cool inserts.

Tons of variations so be on the lookout for that, sadly I didn’t pull any.

Trey – Not sure if this is your cup of tea but the cards are thick, do you recommend using a standard top loader or go with one that’s slightly thicker (55pt)?

Packbuster
Packbuster

Hi. I just bought a retail blaster from target and every pack in the box had a purple chrome refractor. There is nothing listed on the box about purple chrome refractors being in the box? Would these be considered hot boxes? The box also produced a regular chrome and regular refractor as well.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Packbuster: Those are indeed the Hot Box Refractors. Congrats!

Always one of the most popular sets of the year

Brian
Brian

No 1968 Tigers, autograph or otherwise, won’t have to waste any money on this set. They could have at least done a dual auto card of say Willie Horton and Mickey Lolich, World Series WINNERS. They did a dual auto card card of the Cardinals Lou Brock and Steve Carlton who lost the Series. I guess Topps just doesn’t like certain teams and their fans, eh?

Brian
Brian

Gee maybe we will get ONE more Tiger autograph from 1968, eh? Some of them besides Al Kaline are still alive…
