After a controversial switch to a Topps online-only format last year, 2017 Topps Finest Baseball sees the long-running brand return to regular distribution.

The hobby-only product includes two on-card autographs in every master box.

2017 Topps Finest Baseball Base

Working with Chrome technology and abstract background shapes, the base set in 2017 Topps Finest Baseball highlights top veterans and rookies. The various parallels include base Refractor, Purple Refractor (#'d), Blue Refractor (#'d), Green Refractor (#'d), Gold Refractor (#'d), Orange Refractor (#/25), Red Refractor (#/5), and SuperFractor (1/1) versions.

2017 Topps Finest Baseball Autographs

Offering the base design with hard-signed autographs, the Finest Autograph insert tackles the key names from main set while Finest Firsts Autograph cards look exclusively to the rookie stars. Signed parallels include Blue Refractor (#'d), Green Refractor (#'d), Gold Refractor (#'d), Blue Wave Refractor (#'d), Red Wave Refractor (#'d), Orange Refractor (#/25), Red Refractor (#/5), and SuperFractor (1/1)

Other autographs to be found in 2017 Topps Finest Baseball include case-hit Finest Finishes Autographs with Orange Refractor (#/25), Red Refractor (#/5), and SuperFractor (1/1) parallels. The Finest Originals Autographs inserts are hard-signed buybacks from previous sets.

2017 Topps Finest Baseball Inserts

There are also several standard inserts to chase in 2017 Topps Finest Baseball. Finest Breakthroughs centers on the young studs with a wild design while 1994-95 Finest Basketball revisits the popular NBA set for inspiration. Finest Careers is a die-cut option that averages two cards per case. Among the parallels for each are Orange Refractor (#/25), Red Refractor (#/5), SuperFractor (1/1) and limited Autographs (#'d).

2017 Topps Finest Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Good Refractor color variety, on-card autographs remain the norm, basketball throwback design is very nice.

Bad: Overall autograph checklist slants heavily to weaker subjects and most big names seem to be super SP, base short prints increase to 25 cards that each average 1:2 boxes.

The Bottom Line: In my eyes, the 2017 Topps Finest Baseball design is back to the classic middle ground of being distinct/unique enough to stand out while not going too far to the extreme. While the hard-signed cards and reflective shine are a great combo, the price and value output is enough to make collectors hesitant about busting by the box.

Staff Rating:
3.6 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.0/5.0

Although the main design is relatively without color, mostly consisting of white and silver, there is a still a lot of background activity. This seems to get back more to the style of 2015 compared to 2016, which was mainly just tight lines. I like it. Of course, this makes the color Refractors stand out even more, and the review box delivered well here, with Blue, Gold and Purple to go along with a few base Refractors.

Inserts are generally solid, with Finest Breakthroughs and the retro 1994-95 basketball being my favorites of the set. The design recycling is more tolerable here since it is just one set and you are only likely to see one per mini-box. Breakthroughs has the classic ’90 Finest look that I expect from the brand, and the loud insert really pops in Refractor form. I do wish this insert had been a Refractor instead of the standard chromium for the base version.

Finest Firsts cards work more heavily with the team logo, but they still maintain the feel of the product. Obviously, there is the typical die-cut insert, this time for David Ortiz. Personally, they don’t do much, but the rarity at least keeps them to a minimum.

Outside of this, a few autograph sets mostly parallel the base and inserts. It’s hard to complain about on-card signatures, and the Refractor parallels bring that full circle. Finest Finishes is the only signed set without a base insert counterpart. Honestly, it seems to fit into the set the least as far as design goes, but the horizontal layout is appealing for the larger signing area it provides.

Checklist: 3.25/5.0

Going up from 10 cards in 2016, the 2017 Topps Finest Baseball checklist sees a big increase with 25 base short prints and only a minimal odds change. At less than one per box, this makes building the 125-card set quite tough.

Another aspect that can be frustrating for collectors is the short-printed autographs. Long a Topps trend for many sets, the Finest signature checklist looks great on paper. Of course, several teams are barely covered or ignored entirely.

The bigger problem comes from those players that only fall one per case, or less. I realize Topps doesn’t provide print runs when the cards aren’t numbered, but it would be nice if they at least indicated the specific autograph short prints on their checklists to give collectors an idea of their chances. It does appear that Aaron Judge autographs are fairly plentiful, which is a nice boost for the checklist.

So, on the one hand, the full list of names in the checklist is pretty strong, but the uncertainty about totals/rarity makes it much more of a gamble than it initially seems.

Value: 3.0/5.0

Priced around $140+ at the time of this review, the value potential of a Finest box is decent given the hard-signed nature and rare parallels, but that additional cost does make it more difficult to deliver. Refractors and on-card signatures still can’t overcome a checklist loaded with a seemingly large amount of low-value autographs.

The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0

All things considered, the Finest box-opening experience was enjoyable. I like the updated base design, the color representation was acceptable, and hard-signed is always preferred. Sure, some better autographs in the box would have been nice and it is a little insane to think you would need to open multiple cases to even have a shot at one full base set. Still, 2017 Finest gets good marks from me on the fun quota. Now, Topps just needs greater transparency on the autograph checklist. Even tiered SP grouping would be nice.

User Reviews

  1. This brand hits all of my collector itches. It’s the perfect balance of base-set collecting and hit seeking with the right mix of rooks, vets and classics. Managable amount of color parallels, fun inserts, on-card autos, and NO overrated and boring GU pieces.

  2. I have never purchased Finest in the past but ordered a case because they hooked me in with this year’s base design and inserts.

  3. Any info on SP seeding?

  4. Shiny things!

  5. AGAIN TOPPS!!!! DIAMONDBACKS WITH ONLY ONE AUTOGRAPH ARE YOU KIDDING ME HARD FOR ME TO PURCHASE TOPPS PRODUCTS AS I AM A DBACKS PC’er BUT WITH ONLY ONE DBACKS HIT THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND SAD

  6. Really? One base card, one autograph. Twins get no love. No Berrios love, Sano? Nope, we get a base card of our overrated .240 career hitting 2nd baseman, and one auto (not counting the “enough already with his retirement celebration cards” big poppi) who hit like .135 with the Twins, and to this day, whines about his time here. Everyone seems to love this product, I’ll save my money for ANY Panini Football instead. I’m actually offended.

  7. Mike – SP odds are 1:22, so about 1 every 2 boxes.

There is also a Finest Mystery Autograph Redemption at 1:898.

I have to say the cards look better in hand versus the photos.

I don’t know if it was stated but the autos are on-card.

  8. Gorgeous base cards, fun inserts, parallels, & nice on-card autos. Perfect mix of rookies, superstars, and legends. My favorite set of 2017 so far. My only gripe is Topps needs to spread the love on autos (too many Cubs, not enough decent autos for lesser teams).

  9. Typical year if Finest: loaded checklist to mislead consumers with the vast majority of the auto content coming from about 15-20 names that nobody collects. I watched 10 cases broken yesterday with fully 43% of the total auto volume being comprised of these 9 names (Austin, Musgrove, Kepler, Segedin, Healy, Snell, Renfroe, Reed, Wight), while 27 auto options in the checklist (including Bryant, Correa, Griffey Jr., Harper, Kershaw, Ortiz, Ripken, Tanaka, Turner, etc.) were not included in any of the 10 cases. Several other big names (Trout, Bonds, Jeter, Koufax, Moncada, Posey, Ryan) only came out once. We as collectors need to start requiring that Topps produce production run information like Panini… until then, stick to Bowmans Best at this price point (2x the auto volume), or wait for chrome where the cards hold value better.

  10. A bit spendy; but it’s a pretty robust product color and insert wise, and factor in the SP base. I personally think we can do without the continued use of wave autos in these products though.

  11. I agree with Frank on the distribution of autos in this product. Accountability of production runs is proprietary information according to Topps, but collectors are being duped about the percentages of top shelf autos versus lower eschelon autos. At <$125 a box, this product is borderline not worth it.

The design and quality are outstanding. The inserts are above average, especially the crisp and clean Finest First. Ortiz Die-Cuts are unispiring, if not mundane.

Overall, Topps produced a nice set of cards, but the lack of even distribution of big name autos and the rising cost of the product make this a tough recommendation for the average collector.

  12. Watched several case openings and was only impressed by a couple. I still really wanted to get a box though and boy was I disappointed. I can echo what Frank said above. Kepler and Wright autos and Benintendi blue and Lopez purple. Pretty sad for the price tag. I’m way more a collector than a seller but the value is nowhere close to the price. I am used to this but this is worst than usual. There’s always next year but I’ll think twice. Come on Topps, do better!

  13. I broke a case last Saturday and was pleased with the results. Best hit was a Jeter auto /5. Five star product IMO.

  14. I am a sucker for Finest. Quick question to those in the know – It seems there are a few different waves of /25 autos in the 2017 lot. Are the waves (blue, red, orange) different in value or just a variation on the print runs as compared to past years? Thanks for any info.

  15. Expensive.Purchased 3 boxes and received 63 duplicates. That is a full box of duplicates out of 3 .115.00 and some cards were triplicate. This is not good.

  16. Very poor distribution of star autos for the money.

  17. Hey Trey! Do you know if they have any info about variations for this base autograph set??? I see a couple for Andrew Benintendi and was wondering if one of them is shorter print??? I pulled the one of him before he swings and it’s also an orange wave #’d to 25!! I haven’t seen any listed or sold on eBay yet!!?!
    Aloha and Mahalo from Hawaii!!!

  18. Fran: As far as I have seen, there are two signed versions for Benintendi: pre-swing and post-swing. The pre-swing is his base autograph and the post-swing is part of the Finest Firsts signed insert. Post-swing also has a big Red Sox logo in the background. Both have the same selection of parallels. Congrats on the Orange Refractor! Looks like there are a few Orange editions for him on eBay https://www.ebay.com/sch/Baseball-Cards/213/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=2017+finest+Benintendi+%28auto%2Cautograph%29+orange

  19. Hit and miss in my opinion. I’ve seen some big hits in a few breaks and total low end repeats in others. I really don’t understand how Alfaro has autos in this and redemptions. Maybe a bit overpriced for what you’re likely to get but a nice looking product.

  20. Three boxes, all junk except for one Judge base RC and a Mystery Redemption. Any idea when those will be announced? No publicity anywhere.

  21. why 160 to 180 a box this year?

  22. Love this product, i’ve ripped a few cases and yes they are hit or miss with a lot of low end autos of guys ppl don’t really collect, but lots of rookies and a ton of color. I pulled a good number of Judges including a Finest Firsts green auto, 3 of the Recreates autos, 2 Dansby Finest firsts Autos and even hit a Big Mac Super and a Bregman Gold Auto in a group break.

and the price James is so high mainly because of 2 words.

    Aaron Judge

All of 2017 product has skyrocketed because of him

  23. I love Finest they are always nice cards… but I’m LOL reading the other reviews.. and all I have to say is buying baseball cards is a gamble.. yes the product is EXPENSIVE and to pull to cheesy autos is the chance you take when buying….

  24. Like the look of the cards this year. Did two boxes, hit a Moncada Gold Auto redemption and blue non-auto, Orange Kershaw non-auto, so can’t complain. Trey: Any word on when we can be expecting Moncada to sign??

  25. Matt: Topps regularly announces the redemptions being filled but no word on Moncada yet.

  26. Man finest got crowded this year! Can’t be all because of Aaron Judge, can it?

Dave up above – as with all collecting value is in the eye of the beholder, but yes the /25 cards should be more valuable than the higher numbered versions simply because they’re more scarce. The waves look fantastic (orange is plain not wave) but I personally don’t like how there’s three /25 variants. It kind of cheapens itself, like why would anyone want the orange when they can get a cooler looking wave for the same scarcity?

  27. Overall a very cool product. Any word on when the Mystery Redemption will be announced. Any rumors on who they may be?

  28. So last year the Base Card SP came only in a refractor version. Or so it appeared. This year the Base Card SP appear to be not made in refractor. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.
