2017 Topps Finest Baseball Cards
Product Details
After a controversial switch to a Topps online-only format last year, 2017 Topps Finest Baseball sees the long-running brand return to regular distribution. The hobby-only product includes two on-card autographs in every master box.
UPDATE (March 12, 2018): Those collectors holding onto the Mystery Redemption autograph cards now know what to expect thanks to full details from Topps. The three-card set offers redemptions good for signatures from Cody Bellinger (card #1), Ian Happ (#2) or Bradley Zimmer (#3).
2017 Topps Finest Baseball Base
Working with Chrome technology and abstract background shapes, the base set in 2017 Topps Finest Baseball highlights top veterans and rookies. The various parallels include base Refractor, Purple Refractor, Blue Refractor, Green Refractor, Gold Refractor, Orange Refractor (#/25), Red Refractor (#/5), and SuperFractor (1/1) versions.
2017 Topps Finest Baseball Autographs
Offering the base design with hard-signed autographs, the Finest Autograph insert tackles the key names from the main set while Finest Firsts Autograph cards look exclusively to the rookie stars. Signed parallels include Blue Refractor, Green Refractor, Gold Refractor, Blue Wave Refractor, Red Wave Refractor, Orange Refractor (#/25), Red Refractor (#/5), and SuperFractor (1/1)
Other autographs to be found in 2017 Topps Finest Baseball include case-hit Finest Finishes Autographs with Orange Refractor (#/25), Red Refractor (#/5), and SuperFractor (1/1) parallels. The Finest Originals Autographs inserts are hard-signed buybacks from previous sets.
2017 Topps Finest Baseball Inserts
There are also several standard inserts to chase in 2017 Topps Finest Baseball. Finest Breakthroughs centers on the young studs with a wild design while 1994-95 Finest Basketball revisits the popular NBA set for inspiration. Finest Careers is a die-cut option that averages two cards per case. Among the parallels for each are Orange Refractor (#/25), Red Refractor (#/5), SuperFractor (1/1) and limited Autographs (#'d).

Product Review
2017 Topps Finest Baseball Product Review
Reviewed by Trey Treutel
Good: Good Refractor color variety, on-card autographs remain the norm, basketball throwback design is very nice.
Bad: Overall autograph checklist slants heavily to weaker subjects and most big names seem to be super SP, base short prints increase to 25 cards that each average 1:2 boxes.
The Bottom Line: In my eyes, the 2017 Topps Finest Baseball design is back to the classic middle ground of being distinct/unique enough to stand out while not going too far to the extreme. While the hard-signed cards and reflective shine are a great combo, the price and value output is enough to make collectors hesitant about busting by the box.
Card Design: 4.0/5.0
Although the main design is relatively without color, mostly consisting of white and silver, there is a still a lot of background activity. This seems to get back more to the style of 2015 compared to 2016, which was mainly just tight lines. I like it. Of course, this makes the color Refractors stand out even more, and the review box delivered well here, with Blue, Gold and Purple to go along with a few base Refractors.
Inserts are generally solid, with Finest Breakthroughs and the retro 1994-95 basketball being my favorites of the set. The design recycling is more tolerable here since it is just one set and you are only likely to see one per mini-box. Breakthroughs has the classic ’90 Finest look that I expect from the brand, and the loud insert really pops in Refractor form. I do wish this insert had been a Refractor instead of the standard chromium for the base version.
Finest Firsts cards work more heavily with the team logo, but they still maintain the feel of the product. Obviously, there is the typical die-cut insert, this time for David Ortiz. Personally, they don’t do much, but the rarity at least keeps them to a minimum.
Outside of this, a few autograph sets mostly parallel the base and inserts. It’s hard to complain about on-card signatures, and the Refractor parallels bring that full circle. Finest Finishes is the only signed set without a base insert counterpart. Honestly, it seems to fit into the set the least as far as design goes, but the horizontal layout is appealing for the larger signing area it provides.
Checklist: 3.25/5.0
Going up from 10 cards in 2016, the 2017 Topps Finest Baseball checklist sees a big increase with 25 base short prints and only a minimal odds change. At less than one per box, this makes building the 125-card set quite tough.
Another aspect that can be frustrating for collectors is the short-printed autographs. Long a Topps trend for many sets, the Finest signature checklist looks great on paper. Of course, several teams are barely covered or ignored entirely.
The bigger problem comes from those players that only fall one per case, or less. I realize Topps doesn’t provide print runs when the cards aren’t numbered, but it would be nice if they at least indicated the specific autograph short prints on their checklists to give collectors an idea of their chances. It does appear that Aaron Judge autographs are fairly plentiful, which is a nice boost for the checklist.
So, on the one hand, the full list of names in the checklist is pretty strong, but the uncertainty about totals/rarity makes it much more of a gamble than it initially seems.
Value: 3.0/5.0
Priced around $140+ at the time of this review, the value potential of a Finest box is decent given the hard-signed nature and rare parallels, but that additional cost does make it more difficult to deliver. Refractors and on-card signatures still can’t overcome a checklist loaded with a seemingly large amount of low-value autographs.
The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0
All things considered, the Finest box-opening experience was enjoyable. I like the updated base design, the color representation was acceptable, and hard-signed is always preferred. Sure, some better autographs in the box would have been nice and it is a little insane to think you would need to open multiple cases to even have a shot at one full base set. Still, 2017 Finest gets good marks from me on the fun quota. Now, Topps just needs greater transparency on the autograph checklist. Even tiered SP grouping would be nice.

So, I pull this redemption in May, and today I get this in an email from Topps:
GRC4HQDSVL Topps Finest Finest Mystery Redemption # 2 of REQUEST SUB
Does this mean that Mystery Redemptions will not happen? I never asked for a deadline for accepting the card I was promised. How does this company get away with this? Topps cannot even produce a MYSTERY card? Something stinks here.
