FOR 2018-19?

It so nice to have a set with an emphasis on the Canadian teams, and to have all the insert sets relatively attainable.

I am often critical of Upper Deck products but I do like to offer praise when it is due. With the Tim’s set, it’s just a fantastic and fun way to collect. My sons are 10 and 6 & this is a great way to show them how much fun collecting can be. Don’t worry about the high-end hits & the feeling of despair when you just blew 1K or 2K on a case & received poor value. That won’t happen with the Tim’s hockey cards ever. It’s relatively low-cost & with the added collectors binder, what more could you ask for? My kids love it & so do I. My only complaint (and my kids agree) is we don’t really like the design of the ‘Top 100’ cards but so what. Everyone has different tastes & overall, this set is a home run for us. Thanks UD & Timmy’s!

The NPN offer is funny. Cost of both stamps nowadays totals $1.70!

From what I can see from the comments above, its main target is not necessarily collectors, but people who just open a few packs for fun, all along with their morning coffee, and who normally don’t go into a hobby store. I’ve also seen a lot of dads who collect it just to bond with their kids. It’s nice to have a change once in a while from the regular collector. I’m not saying that the latter doesn’t purchase this collection at all, but I’m under the impression that he’s not the main target for this product.

As for the products that pop up on eBay weeks before the release date, it’s not surprising. It’s not hobby stores that sell it, but a coffee shop, which don’t understand the hobby business deontology: you don’t sell a product before the release date. Also, Upper Deck shouldn’t send the packs to the shop before the release date in order to avoid such problems. There is also the issue of weighting the packs. Again, not surprising, since there are no security measure to forbid that, the kind of mesure you’ll find in a regular UD collection (blank in the packs, uneven number of cards per packs, etc.).

As for the set itself, I admit I am a bit mitigated.

1. The quality of the cards it’s extremely poor.
2. The checklist looks ok though.
3. The price is super high. In average, per card, you pay 3 times more than for a MVP or OPC card. I’m sorry, but the huge difference is not justified at all.
4. No rookies, no memorabilia (I’m talking about some approximatively easy to find memorabilia, not one for every 70.000 packs).
5. Most of the inserts are horrible and the general design is ugly. The only three subsets I like are Stats Markers, Platinum and Clear Cut.

All in all, if the price was at least twice as lower as it is now, I would have given it a 3 stars. Like this, it’s a 2 stars product for me.

Hi I pulled a 2017-2018 #1 draft pick scratch card can anyone give me information on this ?

They need to get this back to being a collectible activity for kids/families – that is not possible at $1/3 card pkg with a beverage – should consider 2 or 3 pkgs for $1 each with purchase of any beverage.

The size of the set and the timeframe they are available make it tough for an average family to get a set, let alone families with more than one child.

It’s moving to an adult hobby for people with $$ or people with connections – in the end it will have an adverse effect on the interest in these collectibles.

Agree with one comment some of the quality seems a bit off this year.

I hate Upper Deck and Hockey is No 4. on the 4 team sports I collect but this set is the most FUN and CHEAP THRILLS that you can get. Dollar for Dollar the most fun set to collect the last 2 years in any sport. Nothing in Football or Basketball comes close.

Only Topps Bunt comes close to this set in FUN COLLECTIBILITY but the inserts here are MORE super cool. (And I am a person who detests inserts)

The cards look great and the 2 inserts (Clear Cuts and Triple Exposure) especially Clear Cut are awesome. A super improvement on last year (which would have been hard to do)

The best set of 2017-2018 any sport.

It does suck about the collector’s book. It was actually the first 25 to collect the 100 digital card set.
There is also no free wedges or 25 dollar gift card. It seems like this promotion will not excist down the road.
I am not sure what is worst, people getting access before the promotion starts or people complaing to Upper Deck and Tim Hortons.
This hobby will all be on epack within 5 to 10 years screwing the hobby shop, distributor but I guess in the long run the card company will win.
The hologram cards suck this year too. Hard to get but déjà vu of McDonalds cards from the 90’s.

Sadly they officially did not change much from last year except make the Base cards cheaper and I liked the FF better than TE this year. You can also still feel how much heavier the pack is when there is a TE in it. Employees at Tim Hortons are not supposed to let people pick the pack from the box but unfortunately and sadly 90% of them don’t care. I’ll still collect with my son though as a bonding exercise and I need my daily coffee, lol.

@Trey Odds on the inserts are at the back of the packs:
Top 100 Checklist Cards (1:4 packs)
Game Day Action (1:3 Packs)
Stat Makers (1:5 Packs)
Platinum Profiles (1:9 Packs)
Clear Cut Phenoms (1:16 Packs)
Triple Exposure (1:24 Packs)
#1 Draft Pick Redemptions (1:15,000 Packs)

Overall, base cards look good but cards are flimsy and bent most of the time being in 3 card packs. Favorite inserts are Stat Makers and the Clear Cut cards.

DCal: Thanks!

That makes good sense

Reason I ask is that there are Crosby auto cards on Ebay being advertised as out of 87 but I dont see any handwritten numbers on them

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

The Crosby print run was provided by Tim Hortons. It will likely be numbered on the live card, not the redemption you see on eBay.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Alan: The Crosby is likely hand-numbered to 87 copies just like it was last year.

@Shawn really? No BS? If you did that’s a lottery hit!

I got a Scheifele jersey relics card and I thought I was lucky. Damn

Pulled the Crosby Signature /87 yesterday! What a great cup of coffee that was

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Shawn: Awesome pull, Shawn! Those are crazy tough.

Was super excited to get my hands on these cards this morning. Opened them and was utterly disapponted with the quality of the cards. The card stock used this year is way lower quality than the ones last year. Thats too bad since I really liked last years set.

@ Trey: What are the odds for the more common inserts? Can you get them?

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Noah: Tim Hortons supplied the odds for the autographs, relics and #1 Draft redemption card. I have not come across official odds for any of the chase inserts. If anyone sees them, please let me know and I can add them to the guide.

@Dad of dissatisfied child: Last year (and the year before) there were also 3 cards a pack.

Dad of dissatisfied child
Dad of dissatisfied child

Great product. Disappointed that only 3 cards come in the pack compared to last year for the same price that 5 cards you got last year. And what happened to the online code for additional chances to win. Seams like a good old hoop job.

Picked up a pack of Tim Horton’s hockey cards today and pulled an error.
Tim Horton on the front and Bobrovsky on the back.
Card # 47
Potential value?

seriously guys, this set is just for fun, stop worrying about the resell value and enjoy ripping some packs

Mike…you get the first for $1 and every pack after that got $2. As far as I know you can buy as many packs as you want. I know people are buying boxes ~ which I disagree with ~ so I don’t think there’s a limit.

FYI I have visited several Tim’s here and the people working there had no idea about the hockey card promotion. There no advertising anywhere and it seems to be a real mess this year.

IMO avoid 17/18 product altogether and just get the cards you really want on eBay. There will be little value in boxes this season.

i have a question? what is the limit of packs you can get with a drink

Hi, guys. I hear you all. The only way it’s ever going to stop is dont buy the product. Boycott it. Buy something else. If i was you I would be buying mcdavid and Matthews rookie year packs or boxes.

SAD! SAD! SAD! Seller on Ebay selling 10 days before Release Date? NOT a pre-order Seller says product in hand??? WTF??? is going on here????

Nick, I contacted UD too and the said it’s out of their hand as all cards were developed and sent to the tim Horton’s distributors and COMC. They said they will pass on my concerns but I’m not holding my breath. It sucks that a few bad people only in it for the profit ruin it for all the true hobby collectors and hockey fans out there ~ especially the kids. Boo to them!

In respect to a lot of collectors getting scam with boxes being weighed I totally agree even from inside certain Tim Hortons Locations it has happened to close friends. I had talked with Upper Deck and showed hot to solve this problem at the 2017 May Expo Toronto Sport Card Show but I guess they didn’t care and it was very simple. Solution as we see on all other sport cards boxes that except from boxes being sealed wrapped ther is the company logo/sticker call what ever you the each box has on it and to open the box you have to slice that logo/sticker and thers no way to re glue ect. Upper Deck could very easily place 2 or 3 of those on each 100 pack box thus you don’t have to seal wrap it just put on the logo/sticker and when someone buys the box where it be at Tim Hortons location or on ebay or any other place if the stickers are missing you don’t buy it. The solution is ther and very simple I believe it would not cost or be that much of an issue for Upper Deck to place them on at production time.

Indeed on what you say and I had conversations with both Upper Deck and Tim Hortons reps but my suggestion and I showed them fell on deaf ears I guess they don’t care they only thing they care is how much sale they will do and how much profits they will rake in and that’s ther bottom line.

Yes totally agree with you on that one but ther will always be insider that get the edge but I know it stinks for every one else.

Cards are great, especially the CCP’s, but this years release is a bit of a disaster in my view
1. Cards appeared 10 days in advance on eBay yet when you ask in stores no one has them. Full sets are for sale on line almost a full week before official release
2. Online – did the preregistration last night. Then sat and watched as people across the country who had access to cards packs and pin codes were trading. How ??? Did they not disable the PIN code entry BEFORE the go live date of next week ? Or is on line open to the special few who can get premier access ?
3. Some changes for the negative in my view.
A) Rules indicate more packs that amount to 10.4M versus last years 9.4M. Because of that there are lower odds for the top end cards (Crosby and Ekblad)
B) No #1 Draft Pick indicated in the rules. Did they drop that ? That would be a real detractor from the set
C) No mention of the collectors book they gave to the first 150 to complete the on line. They had in 15/16 and 16/17 but don’t see any mention in 17/18
D) Why are full boxes not sealed. I’ve asked a few people who got access if the boxes were sealed and they said they aren’t. This would deter people from sorting thru the packs for the thicker/heavier packs with the hologram cards and allow buyers of boxes to know if it had potentially been tampered with
Overall I’m a fan as it got me back to collecting but I think they need to do a way better job on the release

Jason B
Jason B

Yes I have been emailing with a guy selling them already and he is bragging about how many in Toronto that he has in is basement. Won’t give source but must work for Upper Deck or distributor or employees get access before official sale date? I do like the concept of these cards, I buy my coffee anyways and my kid gets to open the packs and enjoy. The hobby is sadly taken over by adults and stores looking for the prof and t an awesome and safe hobby! Plus they make way too many packs. Hopefully removing the FF this year means all packs are the same weight.

Its a great set to collect. So much more fun than the mainstream garbage. But Upper Deck needs to find out how and why any product is out there a week before the release date, and come down hard on the franchise that let it out.
They should get Tim Horton’s head office to do an inventory check on every location before next Wednesday. That would expose the culprit.

Hmm I’m not surprised that people are selling cards before the release date. Last year people were buying boxes at Tim’s stores even though they weren’t supposed to and then weighing packs and selling them on eBay. Kids who were trying to collect the cards were disappointed because adults would go in to stores and buy boxes just to turn a profit. I contacted Tim’s and UD and just got the runaround. It’s sad that this is what the hobby has come to.

Nick you should check eBay more carefully i think… We are not talking about pre selling… I know what is pre-selling!!! i’m doing it myself… I’m talking about sellers that have the actual cards IN HANDS since the week-end… They don’t use stock photos, they scanned the actual cards they purchased.. So that Sept. 27th release date is bull****… It should not work like that….

Decent cards but for sure 100% over valued, but look at Tim Hortons for extra packs they want 1.99 plus tax unlike when McDonalds had hocey cards and other items they had limit of 5 packs per drink or fries or hashbrown and after 2-3 weeks you could buy the entire production of packs for 0.99 per pack. As for cards being out nothing is out until the Sept 27-28 so anyone trying to sell cards is just Pre Selling cards just to be ahead of every one else that would be listing cards come sept 27-28. Its like your ordering an item at certain price before it comes out on release day and you may pay more later for that item if you wait or you may pay less down the road for the same card/item

Again good job UD or whoever is in charge of the distribution… Can’t control the release of their products so a week before release some Tim Hortons already sell them and others no…. As Jason B. said, what a joke!!!

Jason B
Jason B

Whay are there so many of these cards on sale 9-10 days bofore they are even released? What a joke to the hobby!
