Product Details
2016 Topps Tribute Baseball returns for another year with a new look and several updates. The hobby-only release includes three on-card autographs and three relic cards per box.
The 2016 Topps Tribute Baseball base set consists of veterans, retired stars and rookies. Parallels for the veteran and retired cards average one per box and include Green (#'d), Purple (#'d), Red (#/5), Black (1/1), Tribute SuperFractor (1/1) using Chromax technology and Printing Plates (1/1). A new addition is the-short printed 2016 Rookies. Featuring the top ten players eligible for rookie card status, the limited rookie cards average two per case. Parallels extend to the rookies as well, with Purple (#'d), Red (#/5), Black (1/1), Tribute SuperFractor (1/1) and Printing Plates (1/1).
Featuring only on-card autographs, the high-end release offers a good variety of signed cards. Tribute Autographs are all numbered and utilize a horizontal design. Parallels include Blue (#'d), Green (#'d), Purple (#'d), Orange (#/25), Red (#/5), Black (1/1), Tribute SuperFractor (1/1) and Printing Plates (1/1). Ageless Accolades (#'d) honor the past with a die-cut plastic design and offer Red (#/5) and Black (1/1) parallels.
Foundations of Greatness and Rightful Recognition Autographs work together in a quasi then-and-now capacity. The autographs are also found in Purple (#'d), Orange (#/25), Red (#/5), Black (1/1), Tribute SuperFractor (1/1) and Printing Plates (1/1) parallels.
The primary multi-player option in 2016 Topps Tribute Baseball, Tandems Book Cards are numbered to 25 and celebrate players that share similarities along with on-card autographs. Triple Crown Memories (#'d) honor the 50th anniversary of the Triple Crown awards for both Sandy Koufax and Frank Robinson with signed cards for each. Both the Tandem books and Triple Crown Memories also include Red (#/5) and Black (1/1) parallels.
Another key focus of 2016 Topps Tribute Baseball, multiple relic cards round out the release. Tribute Relics (#'d) keeps things simple with standard-sized relics. Stamp of Approval (#'d) contains jumbo relic pieces that are also die-cut. The Tribute Relics and Stamp of Approval add Green (#'d), Purple (#'d), Orange (#/25), Red (#/5), Black (1/1), Tribute SuperFractor (1/1) and Printing Plates (1/1) parallels.
Finally, Prime Patches cover current stars and Hall of Fame players with numbered patch relics. Additional rarity is provided with Red (#/5), Black (1/1), Tribute SuperFractor (1/1) parallels. Milestone Relics, numbered to ten, incorporate game-used baseball swatches from notable accomplishments and are MLB Authenticated. A one-of-one Black Jumbo Autograph parallel features a signature.
As many collectors likely remember, 2015 Topps Tribute Baseball was recalled due to a widespread issue with the autographed cards.
UPDATE: Topps announced that two rookie phenoms would join the autograph lineup in 2016 Topps Tribute Baseball. This includes Japanese pitcher Kenta Maeda (Los Angeles Dodgers) and shortstop Raul Mondesi (Kansas City Royals). It was also noted that specific memorabilia pieces featured in the Milestone Relics include items from Clayton Kershaw's 100th win, Kris Bryant's first home run game, David Ortiz's 500th home run game and Carlos Correa's debut game.

2016 Topps Tribute Baseball Product Review
Reviewed by Trey Treutel
Good: On-card autographs, base design is impressive, every hit is numbered.
Bad: High box price compared to overall checklist strength, one-color jersey relics are common.
The Bottom Line: Always a gamble, Tribute continues along the same path that it has been on for years. The cards look great (and Topps has worked out their QC problems from last year) but there are too many weak signers for this price and the small, single-color relics should have been removed by now. Still, there are some big hits to be found if you can stomach the cost.
Card Design: 4.5/5.0
The base cards are absolutely beautiful in 2016 Topps Tribute Baseball. Refined and premium in nature, this is one thing that Tribute does well every year. While these are ultimately some of the least important cards in the release, the strong design elements extend across the set and, no matter your overall opinion on Tribute, it is tough to find a card that does not look great.
The biggest issue from a design perspective is the continued inclusion of the base relics that feature a rather small piece of jersey. Every year this is a complaint and yet they remain. At this price, when two of the three relics take this form in a box, that is likely to ruffle some feathers.
I didn’t pull one in the box but the Triple Crown Memories Autographs are particularly intriguing given their acetate and die-cut design for Sandy Koufax and Frank Robinson.
Checklist: 3.25/5.0
Just like the low-end relics continue to plague the product, the top-to-bottom checklist for 2016 Topps Tribute Baseball is just not where it should be. Yeah, there are some key HOF names and current stars in the autograph sets, but there are also guys like Alex Wood and Brian Johnson.
I get that the signers can’t only be Hall of Fame players and the truly elite modern stars, but when the three autographs in a box can’t break $20 in value, that might be an issue for most at this price.
Although not much really changed for the release, the new Stamp of Approval joins Milestone Relics with MLB authentication. The added level of quality does not make a single-color swatch any better, but the overall card is much more palatable when you can at least point to a specific game when you pull a memorabilia card.
I don’t quite understand making the base rookie cards into short prints in a product like this. While they are not officially part of the base set based on the card number, it is clear that this was what is intended with the exact base design. Collectors expect short prints in low-end sets. In Tribute, this feels like a waste, in my opinion.
Value: 2.75/5.0
2016 Topps Tribute Baseball gives you six chances to deliver on the value. Because half of those are relics, which don’t include a chance at bat barrels or nameplates as an option, you really need to hit at least one big autograph to make your box price justifiable. That’s the $200+ gamble.
Because of the low-end relics and signers in the set, there are some huge duds and most cannot afford to sit there and chase the big hits, box after box. While they are very difficult to uncover, the SuperFractor addition is a nice value boost for those lucky collectors who find them.
The Fun Factor: 3.75/5.0
2016 Topps Tribute Baseball has one hit in every pack and they spread it out over six packs instead of just one. Also, the cards look great and every autograph is hard-signed. This all enhances the experience for me. The main problem is when the break is done and you sit down to analyze the value of what you pulled. Low-end signers OR plain relics are not ideal in a high-end set, but finding both can be truly a collecting bummer.
