Product Details
2016 Topps Star Wars Rogue One Mission Briefing looks across the Star Wars franchise and ends up with a preview for Rogue One. Featuring Heritage stock, each hobby box promises two hits. The name of the product was changed from 2016 Topps Star Wars Road to Rogue One to 2016 Topps Star Wars Rogue One: Mission Briefing.
The movie itself covers the events that transpired between Episode III and Episode IV but 2016 Topps Star Wars Rogue One Mission Briefing offers a wider scope that includes the creation and destruction of The Death Star. The 100-card base set features specific story cards and several parallels. This includes Death Star (1 per pack) and Blue (1:4 packs) parallels that are available in all formats, along with hobby-only Gray (#/100), Gold (#/50) and Orange (1/1).
Offering over 70 signers from throughout the Star Wars universe, base Autographs are joined by Death Star (#/50), Blue (#/25), Gold (#/10), Orange (1/1) and Printing Plates (1/1) parallels. The rarest signed cards include four Dual Autographs, two Triple Autographs and one Quad Autograph.
Rounding out the premium options are Patch cards that center on the notable figures as well as Sketch cards.
Collectors can also find six basic inserts in 2016 Topps Star Wars Rogue One Mission Briefing. They include Character Stickers, Comic Strips, Heroes of the Rebel Alliance, Montages, The Death Star and Villains of the Galactic Empire.
UPDATE (10/25): A limited ten-card expansion set featuring characters from Rogue One was made available at 2016 New York Comic Con. A small supply can be purchased directly from Topps for $20.

Product Review
2016 Topps Star Wars Rogue One Mission Briefing Product Review
Reviewed by Trey Treutel
Good: Great retro feel with added modern inserts, many new Star Wars signers.
Bad: Fairly light on Rogue One content, base parallels add little, manufactured relics are the most plentiful hit.
The Bottom Line: Similar to the lead-up set for The Force Awakens, 2016 Topps Star Wars Rogue One Mission Briefing is the appetizer for the main Rogue One releases coming later. This means only non-spoiler images from the movie plus no Rogue One signers. As long as you know what to expect, this is an appealing low-end product with a nice selection of inserts.
Card Design: 4.0/5.0
Taking a page from the 1983 Return of the Jedi set, the simple base design features a red border, yellow text box fill and black text. The matte finish and old-school Heritage stock really helps sell the retro vibe of the base set. On the other hand, various parallels simply switch the frame color and don’t really offer much.
I did appreciate the nine-card puzzle on the Rogue One card backs at the end of the checklist. It’s little things like this which give a basic set more collecting value.
The various inserts largely did a good job mixing old and new designs. I particularly liked the Montage and Character Foil inserts. Still, it was hard to miss the fact that all the Rogue One inserts looked heavily art- or CGI-based. Plus, I personally could do without the Heroes of… and Villains of… inserts in every one of these sets.
I also wasn’t as much a fan of the base autograph design. I realize they were keeping to the retro theme, but it was just too vanilla for me.
Checklist: 3.75/5.0
Yeah, it is not the most exciting part that only ten of the base cards feature the film that the product is based around. I understand that this is intended to lay the groundwork for the full sets but there was a part of me still underwhelmed even thought I knew this going in. Nevertheless, most of the major Rogue One names we know of were found in the inserts, so there is not a huge void.
Although there are no Rogue One signers, the autograph list features quite a few new options from the Star Wars universe as well as some of the biggest stars. No TFA subjects were featured but the big three of Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill are once again in play.
Value: 3.0/5.0
At around $65-70 per box at the time of this review, two-hit hobby boxes still lean more to the collecting value versus monetary. Since the manufactured relics are unlikely to offer much value, you are counting on a good signer or sketch as the second hit to make your box worthwhile. This is even tougher since many of the autographs are from less valuable signers and, as usual, the biggest names appear to be short prints.
The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0
2016 Topps Star Wars Rogue One Mission Briefing was very enjoyable. I liked connecting my familiarity of the original trilogy with the new movie plus the box did a great job of packing a lot of elements into one set. While it is definitely a release that leaves you wanting more, I suppose that is the whole point.

Seems that the odds for the Parallels are again not correct, not the fault of Cardboard Connection but hoping that they can get official word from Topps on what is what…
