Product Details
Geared mostly to minor league collectors, 2016 Topps Pro Debut Baseball is the main MiLB release to kick off the new season. Hobby boxes promise a pair of autographs and relics.
Showcasing the first minor league images of many of the 2015 MLB draftees, the 200-card base set features the 2016 flagship design and is filled with a bevy of top prospects. Parallels include Gold (#'d), Orange (#/25), Red (#/5), Black (1/1) and Printing Plates (1/1). There are also limited Image Variations that swap the photos for select players.
Autographs combine to drop two per box in Pro Debut. The main option is the Base Autographs, which apply a sticker to the base design. There are also Gold (#'d), Orange (#/25), Red (#/5) and Black (1/1) parallels. Other choices include Pro Production Autographs (#'d) and Dual Affiliation Autographs. Both feature Red (#/5), Black (1/1) and Printing Plate (1/1) parallels.
Also averaging two per hobby box, relics come in several different forms. Fragments of the Farm Relics offer offbeat MiLB memorabilia pieces (the mock-up features hair from a Jobu bobblehead giveaway), while Pennant Patches and Minor League Mascot Patches both opt for manufactured relics. Various parallels extend to each of the relics, including Red (#/5), Black (1/1) and Printing Plates (1/1). Additionally, Gold (#'d ) parallels can be found for the Fragments of the Farm and Pennant Patches.
Finally, a pair of inserts round out 2016 Topps Pro Debut Baseball. Among these, Distinguished Debuts highlight 25 notable players to make their first MiLB appearance. Promo Night Uniforms take a fun approach with a focus on the more exciting uniform designs from the year. There are also limited insert cards for the Make Your Pro Debut promotion winner.

2015 Make Your Pro Debut Winner Set Checklist
Product Review
2016 Topps Pro Debut Baseball Product Review
Reviewed by Trey Treutel
Good: Fair box pricing, numbered cards are plentiful, offers something a little different from most baseball sets.
Bad: Still has only sticker autographs, little growth to the brand.
The Bottom Line: Minor league sets are not a hot commodity for many collectors but MiLB and pre-rookie collectors need options and this is a solid one. On paper, it has not changed much, but it largely sticks with what has worked in the past. That, plus a reasonable box price, means it deserves a look from minor league collectors.
Card Design: 3.5/5.0
2016 Topps Pro Debut Baseball stays close to home with a base design from flagship Topps. While I can see the benefit of reusing a design, it does get old seeing the same thing across multiple sets every year. Still, I like the 2016 look and collectors have a new batch of young talent featured with the now-familiar smokey corners.
While little changed from 2015 Pro Debut, some of the inserts get a noticeable design update. Whereas the 2015 Distinguished Debuts opted for a more refined look, the 2016 version is a little more wild and reminiscent of something you might find in Finest. My preferences lean more to 2015, but it does help break up the monotony of the base set.
Promo Night Uniforms are also back and make the switch to a vertical orientation. I like this move better and appreciate that the design is similar to the base, making it more of a accompanying insert versus a random inclusion, but still different enough to easily stick out.
On the other hand, little changed for the two commemorative relics (Pennant Patches and Mascot Patches). While these manufactured cards are not my preference, the quality is apparent. However, that is somewhat diminished when it becomes the norm and both have been in play in this same basic format for a few years. It seems like it wouldn’t be that hard to change the shape of the pennants each year, at the very least.
The only other design observations I have for 2016 Topps Pro Debut Baseball pertain to issues across the hobby. Again, sticker autographs are the only choices for the signed cards. Also, given how little they add, it is hard to see the need for the ten-card variation set with no theme.
Checklist: 4.0/5.0
All things considered, the 2016 Topps Pro Debut Baseball checklist is solid. Of course, there is no big signer on the level of a Kris Bryant, like in 2015, but there is still plenty for prospect and minor league collectors to be excited about.
The only truly new option in the set is the Pro Production Autographs. With both rarity and a nice selection of subjects, this is a great addition to the checklist.
Although the newness has worn off somewhat, the Fragments of the Farm Relics are still an amusing concept that features baseball-related memorabilia pieces. In particular, the Jobu bobblehead hair and Ugly Christmas Sweater jersey relic stand out.
Value: 4.0/5.0
Two autographs and two relics for around $65-75 is hard to complain about but you can't overlook the fact that these are minor league players when it comes to value. The stop-in-awe hits are nowhere be found here, but you still get good quantity, some quality, and some rarity in every box. My box ended up with three of the four hits being numbered to 50 or less. The only big thing holding this back from a value perspective is the lack of on-card autographs.
The Fun Factor: 3.75/5.0
The most exciting parts of 2016 Pro Debut for me are the things that make it stand out from other sets. The problem is that this only speaks to the insets as the entire base set is lifted from another brand. Still, the Promo Night Uniforms, manufactured patches, and Fragments of the Farm Relics all help create a unique experience. Given that there are so few MiLB sets to speak of, it would be nice if they also had their own separate identity and that starts with a base design of its own. For me, this would further increase the fun.

I really like the look of the cards in this set even though it is definitely a ultra-low and card. I was just wondering if anybody out there knows if any of these cards will appreciate in time once the player is in the majors and does well. Any input on this matter would be fine from anybody especially you Trey. They just don’t seem to have any potential for appreciating as they are minor league cards. I hope that I’m wrong because I am going after a gold willson Contreras card and would like to think that it might appreciate as he is already doing well and I believe is going to be one of the best catchers in the game by time his career ends. I am a biased Cubs fan though. Would appreciate any input on my questions about these cards. Thanks very much, Jim
Trey Treutel
Minor league cards don’t carry the same interest/value as prospects or rookies. If the player does well, values will increase across the board but MiLB cards have a lower ceiling compared to other options.
