Overview
Largely mirroring the variant short print options from the main 2016 Heritage set, the 2016 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball Variations help bring the brand to a close for 2016 with a fresh batch of choices. Spot all the possible variations using our detailed guide.
In addition to the Action Image and Color Swap of 2015, early pack odds indicated that Error and Throwback variations would join the High Number ranks. Fairly obvious to most collectors, at least in theory, Action Image replaces the posed base shot with an in-action photo for 15 players while Team Name Color Swap simply changes the text color for another 25 cards. Both of these are exclusive to hobby, per the original sell sheet. The new High Number additions include Error cards, which replicate something unintended from the 1967 set, and Throwback, offering a look at the old-school uniforms worn by select players.
Because the final checklist for 2016 Topps Heritage High Number did not include any of the variations, collectors will have to keep a sharp lookout for these short prints. That's where we come in. A master checklist is found below and each of the different variation types are broken down using the tabs above. Check back early and often to see the latest variation information as we will quickly compile the images and checklist to help you.
Code Help
Offering collectors additional assistance in spotting the variations are the code backs revealed by breaker brentandbecca. While the actual image is the clear giveaway, codes can be a quicker route to roll through a stack of cards to make sure you did not miss something. Simply check the last three digits of the code found on the back of the card to see what you have:
- Base (#501-700) - 110
- Base SP (#701-725) - 118
- Action Image Variation - 122
- Color Swap Variation - 123
- Throwback Variation - 988
- Error Variation - 989
It is important to note that the codes do not apply to the parallels such as Red Back, Flip Stock or Gum Stain. These will still show the code that corresponds to its spot in the checklist (code #110 or 118, as shown above). Parallels will need to be distinguished based on their visual or physical differences.
Let us know via email if you come across something we are missing.

BRENT HAS ABOUT FIVE OF THESE… HE HAS PICS ON TWITTER
Love the Heritage. Question about the Zobrist Throwback: just broke open two boxes and pulled a #668 Zobrist Throwback and the very next card was a #668 Kuhl. (In another pack pulled another #668 Kuhl and a #564 Zobrist, the one pictured above as “base.” The Zobrist Throwback code is 988; the other two are 110. Is the Kuhl also a short print. Is this just a generic printing error of a throwback? Thanks.
kfitz » Very nice pull! I ran into the same issue when putting the guide together because the final checklist from Topps has Zobrist as base card #564, and #668 for Kuhl, but Zobrist is #668 for the Chrome parallel. I would default to the code and assume the Kuhl is just a base.
I pulled what I believe is a flip stock Byung-Ho Park that has a code 118
I had a customer today pull a Trevor Story code ending in 118? Do you know if this is a variation? Thanks, Keith Chesapeake Sports Cards
Keith Lare » I believe that is the code for the Flip Stock parallel that reverses the stock on the front/back of the card.
TY Trey. I will let him know
Most all of the Zobrist non-base cards have him as 668–Chrome, Throwback and Action anyway. I got the Zobrist Action variation and thought it would be an SSP, but its just an uncorrected error; they’re all like that.
I don’t think that the flip-stock has a code of 118. The Park mentioned above has a 118 code because it is also an SP (all cards 701-725). I pulled a flip stock card that has a code of 110 because it was a lower number – Carlos Estevez #647.
I believe the 118 code is a “red back” as (presumably) witnessed here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2016-TOPPS-HERITAGE-HIGH-NUMBER-BASEBALL-BYUNG-HO-PARK-RED-BACK-708-/262640283499
Sean/Greg — Thanks to all for letting us know what you are seeing. Greg is correct. All non-variation SP (#701-725) are code 118 and standard base are 110. The codes do not apply to the parallels like Gum Stain, Red Back or Flip Stock and only to the variations such as Action, Color, Error and Throwback. This means the code will not help you know if you have one of the aforementioned parallels and you will just need to spot them based on their differences from the base. To repeat, 118 only shows you have a base SP but it still could be a limited parallel with that code. Similarly, you can have a parallel with the 110 code.
What are the black border cards. I pulled. 6 out of 3 retail target jumbo packs, any help woum
JP Martin » Hi JP, cards with a black border are retail exclusive parallels.
I have a chrome refractor of Jose Berrios#709 that ends in 125,is this a sp inheritage high # set.
I really like this set, mainly because of the willson Contreras RC cards that are in it. I did notice one thing that I don’t really understand about his cards. There is a chrome version of a black border that is supposedly serial numbered 2 only 67, however there is no serial number marking anywhere on the card. The paper version of the same card of willson Contreras is supposed to be serial-numbered to 67 but also carries no numbers anywhere on the card. Do you have any information Trey or anyone else about the willson Contreras Walmart exclusive cards with the black border that are supposed to be low production of only 67 but carry no serial numbers anywhere on the card? Other than this dilemma I really like the set overall. Jim
