2016 Topps Heritage Baseball Variations Checklist, Guide and Gallery
Main
What would Topps Heritage be without a boatload of variations? Bringing in a mix of choices, some variations center on the 1967 set — and corresponding errors — which is the main inspiration for 2016 Topps Heritage Baseball. Get a detailed look at all the variations in one place with our detailed guide.
One new wrinkle that will likely draw the ire of many collectors deals with the code on the card back. Long used to help differentiate the variations from the base cards, we have been informed that this is no longer the case and all code numbers are now the same. This makes the card front differences that much more important and removes a viable backup option for determining variations. It does appear that some of the errors end with 327.
Because none of the variations were included on the final checklist, this means that it all has to be manually compiled. We will work as fast as possible to get the information up.
While there are expected options like Action Images and Color Swaps, the earliest cards to show up were the single-player Rookie SP variations that offer standalone options for top names like Kyle Schwarber and Corey Seager. These are easily distinguished as the base versions include two rookie players per card.
As the name indicates, Action Images feature in-action shots of the players versus the standard posed photographs on the base cards. Color Swap takes the main team text and flips the colors so that the black is the main fill color and the primary text color on the base card outlines the black text. They can be a little tricky to spot but are fairly obvious when compared against the base. Long story short, just look for black text for the team name on the front.
Other variations include Throwbacks, which showcase players in their retro jerseys, and Errors that look to the 1967 set for inspiration. Specific to the Kansas City Royals World Series subset (#151-155), Colorized versions stand out when compared to the base black-and-white versions.
View each of the variations, broken up by specific type, in our detailed gallery using the tabs above. We also added a master checklist below that contains all the variations in one big group with a notation as to which variation is in play for each player. Several players have multiple variations, including Buster Posey and Bryce Harper.

Here is a photo of the Aaron Nola variation. It was posted by a user on the blowout cards forum.

gum back variation card #201
don walsh » The Gum Back cards are a parallel.
andrelton simmons is just like todd frazier…his chrome cards show him as a brave and the base show him as an angel
Euh, not big on this year’s overall design, but a few packs woln’t go amiss.
Greg Holland, #441. Error. Front says,
OF, back says, pitcher
Buddy Howell » Looks like an actual error and not an intended variation. His base card lists OF on the card front while all his Chrome parallels list P on front.
Hey, I recently uploaded a youtube video (catch23cards), I was ripping a box of the 2016 Topps Heritage, I happened to mention you guys as the go to website for checklists and the best around for Knowing how to spot those Variations….You guys are the best site around for all the great insight on these awesome variations and set checklists. Hope you dont mind the shout out. Keep up the great work!!! Visit you guys on a daily basis.
Matthew Howard » Thanks, Matthew! We appreciate it! We certainly try our best to provide the best resource available to card collectors.
Have #435 Chris Archer without facsimile signature on front.
William Allen » Shoot me a pic if you can – trey@cardboardconnection.com – and I will add it.
Is there such a thing as a gloss back card? I have one that is obviously with gloss on the back. It stands out like a sore thumb
Edward » Yep. It’s a parallel and listed on the main checklist for the product. It flips the design so that the gloss is on the back and the grainy texture and dull finish is on the front.
I was wondering if anyone pulled a 3 card combo? I got one big card with 3 individual players- Gerardo Parra, Wily Peralta, and Chris Ianneeta. As if the cards weren’t cut. No, number on the back. I don’t if it’s nothing or if I got lucky. Please help! Thanks!
Joe » Ad panel. They are list at the bottom with the box loaders but Topps never supplied a checklist for them. They are in almost every box.
Just scoured through my case, found a Jason Kipnis possible throwback variation. Any info on this?
Kenneth » Please email me a scan or clean image and I can check it out. trey@cardboardconnection.com
Looks like someone posted a Mookie Betts throwback as well. I just sent a copy of the pic I saw on the eBay listing to you, Trey. Check it out!
All of these variations are the reason I stopped buying Heritage. Way, way to many, but that is just my opinion.
Yeah, this is overkill. Way more intimidating than enticing.
what about minis
joel delarosa » Minis are a partial parallel and included on the main checklist page – http://www.cardboardconnection.com/2016-topps-heritage-baseball-cards
Are all variations hobby only?
oae – No. I pulled an action image variation from a Wal-Mart Hanger box
I recently purchased a box of 2016 Topps Baseball Heritage and got two action variations, Yasiel Puig and Tigers pitcher Daniel Norris. Norris isn’t mentioned in the action variation list and I’m wondering if it’s a card that was released without any mention.
Robert Emmes » I have not seen any Action Variations for Daniel Norris. Shoot me an email scan or image and I can check it out -trey@cardboardconnection.com
Does anyone know if the variations have a different last 4 digits in the code number like previous years? It looks like the base cards all end in “7299”.
I pulled a Felix Hernandez throwback from a Wal Mart hanger pack.
Dale McGrath » Can you email me a scan of the card – trey@cardboardconnection.com
found a2016 heritage rick porcello #192 with a definite wax stain on the back
The throwbacks are going for big big money on eBay. Does anyone know just how short the print run is on these?
Chris Allen » It is believed to be around ten copies for each player but Topps has not confirmed.
Isn’t the Cano Action Variation in a throwback uniform? So, is it a throwback too?
Brian » I originally thought the same thing when I saw it. Technically it does feature a throwback uniform but based on the amount to surface, it is clearly not as rare. Throwbacks look to be limited to ten or less copies.
I have two number 190’s in topps heritage baseball 2016. It’s Luis Severino AL Rookie Stars and then one him holding a baseball. Is there a 192 card? I just want to know. Do I have a error card or what?
Dave » The dual is the base rookie and the single-player card is the Action Image variation and is shown on the Action RC tab in our guide.
Just bought a blaster box of 2016 Topps Heritage and got 2 or 3 crap cards from the 90s, what the hell is that all about? How can Topps get any cheaper than inserting worthless ‘vintage’ cards into new packs? No wonder why the hobby is dying.
Do you have better odds pullling inserts/variations from a hobby box vs blaster boxes?
Derek » That is usually the case but you would have to check the pack odds for each to be certain.
Bought a few packs today. Found a “Then and Now” of Phil Niekro and Zack Greinke that was horribly off centre. I know of the gum stains cards as variations, but did they decide to copy another of the flaws that happened with the older cards?
does anyone know the print run on the gum stained back cards???
I have a Card #163 Dodgers Rookies and the picture of Frankie Montas does not have the facsimile signature on it. Is this an Error?
I have a Genuine 2016 Heritage Gum Stained Marcel Ozuna #373. I don’t see it listed anywhere. Have you heard about this from anyone else?
It’s a full base parallel so they aren’t especially rare overall. I see the Ozuna on eBay for $1.35. https://www.ebay.com/itm/2016-Topps-Heritage-Gum-Damage-Back-Marcell-Ozuna-373/232932797120?hash=item363be06ac0:g:j84AAOSwM2deGWk0
