User Rating:

Incorporating the flagship design with the familiar chromium finish, 2016 Topps Chrome Baseball looks to continue a run as one of the most popular yearly baseball sets. Hobby boxes include two autographs while Jumbo boxes offer five autographs.

The 200-card base set showcases the top names from the Series 1 and 2 checklists, including the notable rookie players. There are also limited Base Image Variations that swap photos for select subjects.

Adding to that are the many base Refractor parallels. Options consist of Refractors, Prism Refractors, Purple Refractors (#'d), Blue Refractors (#'d), Green Refractors (#'d), Gold Refractors (#/50), Orange Refractors (#/25 - Hobby), Red Refractors (#/5), SuperFractors (1/1) and Printing Plates (1/1).  Collectors busting hobby boxes can also find limited hot boxes which feature exclusive Black Refractors in place of the base cards.

A key component of Topps Chrome most years, the Rookie Autographs present some of the top options in 2016 Topps Chrome Baseball. Building on the base Chrome autograph, the rainbow of parallels includes Refractors (#'d), Purple Refractors (#'d), Blue Refractors (#'d), Gold Refractors (#/50), Orange Refractors (#/25 - Hobby), Red Refractors (#/5), SuperFractors (1/1 - Hobby/Jumbo) and Printing Plates (1/1).

Among the more limited signed cards are serial numbered MLB Debut Autographs, Team Logo Autographs and Youth Impact Autographs. Each of these also offers Orange Refractors (#/25), Red Refractors (#/5), SuperFractors (1/1) and Printing Plates (1/1) parallels. Dual Autographs pair rookies and veterans on the same card.

Part of some controversy as they have seemingly surfaced early, 2015 Chrome Rookie Autographs for Carlos Correa are also found in the 2016 edition because they were not able to be included in 2015.

2016 Topps Chrome Baseball closes out with several colorful inserts, including Future Stars and Youth Impact. Both add Green Refractors (#'d), Orange Refractors (#/25), Red Refractors (#/5) and SuperFractors (1/1). A new option, the chromium version of the popular First Pitch inserts join the mix and offer Orange Refractors (#/25), Red Refractors (#/5) and SuperFractors (1/1).

Lastly, ROY Chronicles (#'d) are a Jumbo case hit honoring the active players to hoist the Rookie of the Year Award. Parallels include Orange Refractors (#/25), Red Refractors (#/5) and SuperFractor (1/1) and there are also on-card Autographs (#'d) with Orange Refractors (#/25), Red Refractors (#/5), SuperFractor (1/1) and Printing Plates (1/1).

2016 Topps Chrome Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: 2015 Carlos Correa rookie autographs, impressive insert variety, plenty of on-card signatures.

Bad: Weak rookie autograph checklist with only a few big names and a ton of filler, First Pitch adds very little.

The Bottom Line: Topps Chrome works each year because it takes something already in play and adds some flash. Although the overall lack of newness can be frustrating from a collecting perspective, 2016 Topps Chrome Baseball looks good and offers hard-signed autographs. If you can make your peace with the weaker autograph checklist, ’16 Chrome is a fun set with a quality appearance.

Staff Rating:
3.7 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.0/5.0

2016 Topps Chrome Baseball is basically nothing more than a chromium version flagship, especially when talking about the base. If you like the borderless design of Series 1 and 2, then Chrome takes that to another level. I especially enjoy the lack of border in this capacity.

Of course, Topps Chrome also means Refractors and they come in good supply. The base color was a little low for me (just 2 in the box) but the total number fell into a nice sweet spot of not too much or too little. Many collectors will appreciate the Refractor notation on the card backs to help spot them more easily.

In addition to a lot of familiar images in the base set, a few inserts are also recycled. Although Perspectives looks even better in Chrome (I still would prefer different text), the First Pitch insert feels like mainstream filler. I do really enjoy the pop of color found in Future Stars and Youth Impact and those are both favorites for me, especially Youth Impact. Also, while I did not manage to pull one in my box, ROY Chronicles has a quality look and is another strong inclusion.

Checklist: 3.0/5.0

With a total of 71 names in the Rookie Autograph checklist, plus 2015 cards for Correa, there are a ton of choices in 2016 Topps Chrome. This alone is not a bad thing, but the overall group is on the weaker side and only a few names currently fit the star billing. As younger players, this can always change but, as of now, this is not the greatest crop of signers given the number of less valuable names that fill out the majority of the list.

Regardless of where you stand on the 2015 Carlos Correa rookie autographs ending up in the 2016 edition, it does add something to the checklist and, in my mind, is better than not having them at all.

Just like in previous years, variations are back. I do appreciate the Chrome process of making them fairly tough to hit and keeping the total list on the smaller side. I even pulled a Lindor in my box. However, I also feel the parallels for the variations are overkill.

Value: 3.5/5.0

A huge list of signers that don’t offer good depth is not a recipe for strong value. Still, several key rookie names are found, including autographed cards for Correa, Story, Seager, Mazara, and Urias, and Refractors are always good for a value bump. While variations are not the product booster they used to be, they still add something to the bottom line. Because Chrome is not really a product for huge hits, the ceiling is capped. But, a few of the limited autographs, such as ROY Chronicles and MLB Debut, do offer a premium option with on-card content and this also helps.

The Fun Factor: 4.25/5.0

As an appreciator of the mid-end and low-end sets that bring something else to the table beyond hits, I find 2016 Topps Chrome Baseball to be a worthy option and an exciting experience. The inserts are strong and the base and Refractors are just as nice as you would expect. Of course, the signers list could benefit from an overhaul and the value is not amazing, but the collector in me enjoyed it nevertheless. Plus, it's always nice to pull a rare variation for a young star.

Its so funny when guys break 1 case and complain they didnt get an amazing auto to pay for their case. If EVERY case “paid for itself” the price wouldnt be what it is. Resell prices, percentage of hits, # of cases avail all play into your price point so if every cade had a $750 auto, your case lrice would t be $750, but rather $2,250 the youd be complaining you only got a $750 auto in a $2,250 hit

In short, go back to economics 101

Alot of hits plus I found an error!

Have anyone found a Michael Wacha gold refractor parrell that’s missing the #/50. I have one. Could this be an error 1/1?

I live in a small town with the nearest hobby shop an hour away. I have always bought both Topps Chrome Football and Baseball. I like that Topps will give retail packs, boxes, and blasters, their own Refractor i.e. the Blue Parallels, Orange, and Purple in the Beast. This year it’s Sepia, Pink, and Green Refractor’s. Bought one $19.99 blaster box at Wal-Mart and pulled a redemption of Julio Urias Green Refractor Rookie Auto /99.

Chrome looks great this year. Generally it does look good. This year the RC class is to date not the best but, maybe someday a couple more will stand out. That is part of the deal. Some guys stand out right away others take a couple years. I like it. last year was much better as the RC class was loaded but we cant get that every year, as much as we would all like… I have opened a case of jumbo I did not get one duplicate auto meaning ex: 2 base autos of Sano, I did get a couple same player autos but one base and the other color. Plus I did get roy chronicles auto and a variation card. My second case is a regular case non jumbo. I am still going through it but so far its been good. Low numbered autos and the Black hot box. Over all some of the autos could be better but that is the chance we all take when opening boxes. Its not like the old days when they were just cards. The only 2 complaints are the Correa RC auto in this years product. Not a fan of delayed RC cards reportedly due to late arrival to insert in the product or whatever. My thought is they knew he was hot so try to milk it for this year too. Second a true RC card includes the players rookie year stats on the card. Since he played in MLB. Technically all of last years rookies should really be rookies this year. That is all.

Do you know if the Correra Superfractor has been pulled?

2016 Topps Chrome is just as bad as it has been the past 5 years. What is the big problem? Poor pull rate once again for top guys. I busted a case of this and my best pull was a Miguel Sano Blue Refractor Auto. $745 for a case and your best pull is a Sano auto?
2016 Optic is much better than Topps Chrome and if Optic becomes a yearly release for Panini I will no longer purchase Chrome. My 3 cases of Optic have been loaded. 3 Schwarber autos, 6 Seager Autos, 90 autos total, 8 holo hot boxes, 5 auto hot boxes(5 autos per box). When does Topps Chrome give you the extra auto? When you spend another $60 for a jumbo, that’s when.
Shame on you Topps for letting a first year release completely own you in quality and value. If anyone from Panini reads these reviews, sign me up for Optic forever. Topps Chrome, our relationship is over.

For the price point it’s hard to beat. The design and photography are great. I used to collect football chrome but now I get my fix with baseball and I’m not disappointed.

Only 2 stars…chrome cards are always pleasant but yeah the rehashed filler garbage from the topps series felt like a slap in the face as a consumer. Trout refractor and some prisom refractors from 2 – retail 3 packs. Thicker cards harder to get in those sleeves. Cheers

This years Chrome looks really nice! One of my favorite designs so far. The rookie class may not be as strong as years past but box prices will not break the bank and it is a beautiful set to collect.

As a person who’s primary motivation is reselling I think this product is FANTASTIC. These unbordered cards offer a great opportunity for getting high grades from BGS, PSA, et.al, which I do a lot of, and there are several rookies with high potential to become stars including Tyler White, Stephen Piscotty, Brandon Drury, Trea Turner and Trayce Thompson among others. I think this is going to be the show-stopping mid-price-range set of the 2016 season and my recommendation is BUY BUY BUY.

Caught fresh Walmart stocking of this today, grabbed a 3 pack and scored a Harper photo variation green refractor 3/99 – surprised its really not worth that much more than the regular green refractor. Best looking chrome product in a long time.

Really nice looking cards. The inserts look really good, however instead of 2 future stars type inserts I would have preferred 1 of them have veterans. And leave out the first pitch cards.
I’m guessing the majority of the ratings here a from flippers because outside of last year I dare anyone to name more than a few rookies in a year who are actually stars.
The collation in my 3 hobby boxes must have been off because I didn’t get many dups and am only short 11 cards. My autos weren’t the greatest now but I’ll give it a few years(see Donaldson, Arrieta, or Arenado).
Topps is a business and guess what…there are more Yankee/Red Sox fans than Brewers/Padres. Outside of Braun and Myers I can only think of a couple of “stars” from those teams.
And stop with the rookie debate! A player is NOT a rookie until he plays a game in MLB. The base RC logo sells for more than the prospect card. The Bowman autos sell for more because it’s their 1st.

Look, I mean it’s not Topps’ fault that the rookie class sucks this year. Because that’s really the problem with 2016 Topps Chrome. It’s THE must-have product for RC autos, yet the rookie class fell flat due to Schwarber’s injury and Conforto dropping off the face of the earth. Corey Seager is the only decent rookie. Time will tell whether some of these $2 autos might turn into major players in 5 years, but there is little juice to the product now because of the uninspiring play by the rookie class.

That’s not Topps’ fault. The product is very nice. Topps did a GREAT job IMO with the inserts. The ROY Chronicles insert is one of the nicest looking insert sets I’ve ever seen. And I’m not just saying that because I pulled the Buster Posey ROY Chronicles superfractor auto. =)

I haven’t gotten involved much this year yet, but I did buy a blaster box just to check out. I thought the cards looked great with this year’s Topps design. Much better than last year’s. I am concerned about DH’s comment. I opened a case of Jumbo’s last year and the collation was horrible. All I got were junk RC autos, not one good name.

DH
DH

Collation is terrible. Opened 2 jumbos & 6 regular boxes. Still missing 10% of the base set (20 cards). Last year for topps chrome for me. Think there must be a least 6 redemption autos

When you talk about players appearing as a rookie in “many seasons” are you talking about them being on Bowman cards previously? Thought Owens, Piscotty, Refsnyder and Sano were listed as rookies last year but they didn’t have Topps Chrome rookie auto cards and don’t recall them being listed as rookies in any other seasons besides last year.

Jamey F.
Jamey F.

Good Lord, that really is a sad list of, “Rookies.”

I use the term “Rookie” rather loosely, given the sheer number of SEASONS Topps has produced RCs for Steven Piscotty, Rob Refsnyder, Miguel Sano, Peter O’Brien, Henry Owens and Trayce Thompson, amongst many others. It’s discouraging as all it is, is a transparent money grab. I mean, seriously, how many seasons has Gary Sanchez gotten his face into as “Rookie?”

The manufacturers are hell-bent on ruining the hobby, again. The over-saturation is nothing short of astounding.

Trey, any word if the Carlos Correa RC autos have the same format as the 2016 rookie class or is it just the superfractor & 5 red refractor autos?

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Mike No official word on which 2015 parallels for Correa will be included.

Totally with Paul on this. Enough of the Yankees/Sox domination of every single set Topps issues. 4 Brewers in the base set. 4.

With 200 cards in the set, each team should have either 6 or 7 cards — not 23 for the Yankees and Sox and 4 Brewers (and 3 Padres).

Well Said Paul !

Paul
Paul

Once again, an awful checklist, slanted heavily to the Yankees and Red Sox (23 Yanks/Sox of the 200 base, not to mention numerous insert cards as well) The same old, tired rehashed players. Rusney Castillo, Mark Teixeira, Henry Owens, Luis Severino, Brian Johnson?? How about adding some players across the league that have had some relevance to this season instead of players who have been in the minors or have contributed next to nothing all season.

brian
brian

Good lord this may be one of the worst Topps products ever released. 2015 was only 55 auto subjects and impossible to hit anything decent. This is over 70 with only 1-2 guys that will be more than $30 hits.

Topps Chrome is always a solid hit, and I think this rookie class will be insanely good.

Sebastien That is the case price.

Why such a late release ? Also bet on a ton of Correa Auto’s too. Flooding the market on him is not good.
