User Rating:

2014 Topps Turkey Red Football has the same basic look and feel as the past couple of years. However, it should be a lot easier for collectors to get as it's no longer an online-exclusive. It's still not a hobby product, though. That's because, like 2014-15 Panini Prestige Basketball, it's only available at Target.

2014 Turkey Red Football boxes remain small. Each has just 11 cards. However one is a rookie autograph. These use stickers for the signatures and they're essentially a base parallel. Autographs are not serial numbered this year.

2014 Topps Turkey Red Football Cards 2

Mini cards are back as a parallel as well, landing one per box.

As with the online-exclusive sets, every aspect of the checklist is focused on rookies. The design sticks with an old-school theme that compliment the original Turkey Red cabinet cards.

Topps hasn't released any official info on the set. We'll update with complete details and a full checklist once we receive it. In the meantime, you can click on the tab above for a tentative checklist of confirmed cards that we'll add to as more surface.

Product Configuration: 1 pack per box, 11 cards per pack

Just pulled 2 different Clowneys, so obviously one’s a variation. Anyone know the odds on these? May send it in to get it graded. Appears nice.

Only buying a single pack/box of this and pulling a Blake Bortles auto, Manziel base (and Cook mini) makes it easy to give it decent ratings. I thought the card design was nice and the variations give retail buyers something else to chase. My Bortles base auto is the only one I’ve seen so it’s either super super super short printed or the collation must be horrible.

But it is absurd not to publish some manner of print runs… either exact numbers or at the very least some sort of SP/SSP ranges. That and the poor collation I see in breaks keep me from fully endorsing this set – seems that’d be common sense customer service.

Good luck to anyone building this master!

As I am one of just a handful of faithful Turkey Red collectors, I have decided to collect the MASTER SET, including up to the following cards:

– 100 Base Cards
– 100 Mini Cards
– 78 BASE Autos
– 10 SSP Photo Variations
——————————
– Will Collect all 288 Total Cards for Master Set

– I currently NEED:

– 0 Base Cards (Base Set Complete!)
– 26 Mini Cards
– 31 Autos (Need 4 high-end base autos: Bortles, Carr, Cooks, Garapalo)
– 6 SSP Photo Variations (I have Carr, Evans, Bortles, Ebron)

… Topps has made this next to impossible, for the following reasons:

1. The collation is the worst I have seen in almost 31 years of collecting (I am 41, and have been collecting since age 10). The other day, I picked up 3 boxes from Target, and got 2 C.J. Fiderowicz autos from 3 boxes, AND I got the SAME 3 Mini Cards! The odds of this happening randomly is 1:970,000, unless of course if Topps got “complacent” with collation. in December, I bought 4 boxes and got 3 Ha Ha Clinton-Dix autos…GREAT for the fan of Clinton-Dix…not so great for master set builders!

2. The condition of these cards OUT OF THE BOX is inexcusable. You all know how frustrating it is to get AWFUL cards…and then we double down, buy MORE cards, FINALLY get a GOOD hit, and it is BUMPED on the corners pretty bad. In fairness to Topps, one creased auto I received was replaced promptly.

3. Where are the GOOD Cards, Good Minis, and Good Autos? Check Ebay, and you will see they are simply NOT popping up at auction, even after 4 months! Either the collation is just THAT bad, or the SP slant is SO bad, that many of the better autos and minis are simply SSSP! My instinct tells me that Topps intentionally made the collation so awful, that there is a Target in Honolulu, and in Paduca, Kentucky, and another in Deming, New Mexico that currently have 8 or 9 unopened boxes that ALL have a HUGE run of the tough cards. This was also evidenced by a Case from one hobbyist a year or two ago that had 3 or 4 of the 10 short-printed RG3 Autographs numbered /10…in the SAME CASE. This is inexcusable, and it is clear that poor collation has made set building impossible, and the fairness doctrine is all but gone, because you simply aren’t going to get that big HIT unless you are in one of those HIT-CASES.

4. Topps and Beckett made a HUGE mistake on the values of the SP Photo Variations with this set. They are so INCREDIBLY rare, that some of the 10 SSP Photo variations have not been seen ONCE YET? Sankey, Mason, Watkins and Clowney Variations have yet to appear even one time in 4 months; while the others have come up between 1 and 4 times each. Ironically, The Mike Evans SSP Photo Variation had TWO of them in the same case, while 1000 cases in the last 4 months have appeared to yield one additional Evans SSP for sale on Ebay or other online outlets – Another collation anomaly.

5. With no rhyme or reason, there are some players who are incredibly short-printed on their base autos, and this is not necessarily just the headline names. A few lineman, and a few second tier wide receivers are probably short-printed to the tune of 20 or less! This brings me to my final point – although I like the design, Topps “mailed it in” with this set! there are ZERO inserts, and the Mini Cards, Autos, and even the green /10 and black 1/1 cards are all identical. If they choose NOT to serial number the base autos, AT the very LEAST publish the print run, so we can establish some semblance of identity, scarcity, desirability, and scarcity.

This is my final post on the matter, and I apologize for being so long-winded on this topic. I really like this set, and rarely do I ever post anything….but I feel I had information for the benefit of other collectors – I hope you all see it that way too.

Here is my deeper look at this product, after many many purchases. First off, they are extremely condition-sensitive, a la 1962 Topps baseball (“the Woodies” come to mind), or 1986 Fleer Basketball, or 1985/1986 Topps Football…. So, there will be an even smaller print run of an already small print run of high 9.5 and 10’s. Just look online at online auction houses, and you will see white corners galore.

There are 1800 Target Stores in America, and if each store got 12 packs/boxes, there would be 1800 x 9 base cards x 12 packs per store = roughly 2000 base cards per player. My Target store said they got 10 total, no more.

With the Autos, the math works as follows:

1800 stores x 12 packs per store x 1 auto / 78 autos in the set = 276 of each player… But of course, there are CLEARLY fewer Manziel, Bortles, etc… than say Henry Josey and Logan Thomas.

It would be nice to get final non-serial number print runs from Topps, as this is ridiculous and unfair for them to not reveal these print runs for 2013 and 2014 Turkey Red Football.

All in all, this is a GREAT year to collect rookies, and with an ALL ROOKIE set, I cannot believe how many complaints I am hearing….BUT, I feel I am eventually going to reap some HUGE dividends in getting Mike Evans, Kelvin Benjamin, and John Brown autos for less than $25.00 – Keep em coming, I will buy every single one of them!
