2014 Topps Series 1 Baseball Variation Short Prints Guide

2014 Topps Series 1 Baseball Variation Short Prints Guide

Overview

Who's ready for a postseason celebration? That's the first theme for the 2014 Topps Series 1 Baseball variation short prints. The majority of the SSPs show players in a postseason party or wearing themed gear.

Variations were not included on the set's checklist. Nor do packs make any mention of them. The stealth inserts have become a staple of the brand, offering alternate photos of the base cards.

Shop for 2014 Topps Series 1 Baseball variations on eBay.

Like previous years, the 2014 Topps Baseball variations aren't limited to players on the Series 1 checklist. For example, Adam Wainwright's SP card is number 375. 2014 Topps Series 1 ends at #331. Besides a couple of inserts, the Cardinals pitcher only appears on a League Leaders card. It's safe to say that Wainwright has a spot reserved on the Series 2 checklist that will come with a different picture.

The postseason theme isn't the only type of variation. Several players have Sparkle versions, a theme used in 2011 Topps Baseball. For example, a Mike Trout variant as an added sparkle on one of his cleats.  Joe Mauer has a similar variation with a sparkle on his helmet. Basically, you need to look very closely to spot the difference. Sparkle variations are significantly tougher than the photo variations.

Below you'll find a list of confirmed 2014 Topps Series 1 Baseball variations and short prints. We've included images of both the SP version and, when applicable, the base version for comparison. There are also want list-friendly notes to help you tell the difference between the two.

I’m pretty confused… Will Middlesbrook has a clear variation card, then why is the Future Stars of his (which is supposed to be the base) have the number end in 87 instead of 34 (base last two digits)? All other Future Stars end in 34 also. :-/

David Yaple

I have a 2014 topps baseball of Joey Votto with the card number 272 and a 2014 topps baseball of Carlos Villlanuea with the card number of 272 also. Has this been seen before?

Help me Mr Wizard! Love this product just wish I could grab an autograph every so often and not like-NEVER!! I am A retail shopper and buy blaster boxes, but I think the jumbo hanger packs offer more of a chance at rarer cards.
Pulled a Series 1, Walmart Blue, Error Card of Henderson Alvarez (No name on front) and I have been unable to find another Walmart blue ERROR card anywhere-past or present for sale or that has been sold. What do I have the only one made? I find it hard to believe, but has anyone else seen or heard of this parallel version having an error card (NNO, No foil, No name, ect)
Please let me know-it would be appreciated. FAT PAPPY

Hi I pulled out a Mariano Rivera when he is walking on the field the border is green I haven’t yet seen a green border of this card. His other production cards I have seen in green like when he is on the mound. Just basically wanted to know how rare is the card.

I pulled a Red Hot Foil #115 Brett Oberholtzer card with no foil-imprinted name or Topps logo. Is this just an error card? I just started collecting baseball cards last year, and this is the first card I have come across like this. Thanks!

Ryan that is what I did this am and that was the case it IS a Sabermetrics variation. Thanks for the quick response. Search enough on Google and you can find the answer to anything! Thanks again!

Ed
#43 Trumbo is a lot like the variations shown. I checked out the list again to see if it was updated yet Just for the #43 Trumbo. I haven’t compared it yet to others, I just learned about the variations yesterday. I was able to buy 2 Walmart Hangers of Trouts variation card in Casa Grande AZ. Less than 2 weeks ago. Shocked to say the least
Fun idea.

Lol if it’s one in 4100 pack of cards well my nephews hit the Jack pot I got 3 of the Gatorade mike trout cards selling one on eBay for 85 dollars free shipping

larry
larry

For the record, the Trouts are also disappearing just as fast from Walmart. Stocked for about 1 week, as part of an Opening Day promotion. Only in select stores. I’ve heard 1 in 4100 pack odds. Can anyone confirm?

larry

Looks like the Trout-Gatorade cards are coming fast on eBay. Did Walmart just stock their shelves in the last couple days? Looks like a mad dash to sell first.

Chadd braine
Chadd braine

How hard is it to find the new Trout variation with the Gatorade bath?

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Chadd braine » Not sure. The fact that it took this long for one to surface should mean it’s pretty tough. The Walmart packs might have the odds on the pack.

i have 2 trout silver ring cards..exactly the same except the one back says CR21….THE OTHER SAYS CRAMT…the MT one is supposed to be GOLD ring and autographed….and where are the SPRING FEVER cards????????????? could they be coming in series 2 with some tanaka cards…….panini had a wrapper redemption and they send you your redemption cards in 4 months…

Chazdog
Chazdog

Well, at least I know where all those worn out cards that Topps got stuck with in the 75 years of collecting went to…They stuck them in the 2014 packs instead of NOT getting what your code said you were getting at the website… Overall, a good product. But then again, they don’t have any competition anymore anyhow…

Lee Lamberts
Lee Lamberts

What about Joey Votto, No. 19, with the green border? And is the “The Future Is Now” subset (I got Mike Trout) gonna be a big deal?
Thanks.
(newbie)

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Lee Lamberts » The green border card is a parallel — all the cards in the set have several different ones. The Future is Now is an insert — kind of like a bonus set. Variations look like regular base cards but have something different about the photo (as shown).

Logan Hubbard
Logan Hubbard

Does anyone know the exact odds of finding a variation because I might have just got really lucky. I bought 4 jumbo packs at wal mart today and got a Gerrit Cole Sparkle in the last pack. I looked up on ebay that there is 2 for sale for $99.99. Do you think if I wanted to sell my card, which I don’t, that this is the time to sell high?

Chris J
Chris J

Do the sparkle SP’s have a different serial # than the base card?
I know the 2012 Update SP’s had a….08 code # on the back of the card and the base cards had a….75 on the back.

Ryan Cracknell

With all the awesome work Cracknell does I would expect a raise! Unless all he deals with are variations. Anyway, it is very coo to have this and many other pages just like it!
Thanks!!!!!!!!

So the Doolittle postseason #226 is not a variation?

Ryan Cracknell

Ryan » It is not.

I don’t have it with me but I remember my adrian gonzalez card with sparkle showing almost to his cleats. Shows more legs. I will check tonight.

ryan, thanks for the tip–a quick run through eBay shows that the Howard card is indeed NOT sparkle. just a sparkly sun glare. Thanks again!

so the list above isn’t definitive? i just pulled a ryan howard that looks pretty sparkled to me (i am suspicious because of the domonic brown 2011 non-sparkle sparkle card). anyone else report a howard sparkle?

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

prufrock » It’s not final yet. Not sure how many there are yet, though I think we’re close. The best thing to do might be to compare it with pics of other Howards listed on eBay. Base and parallels would work to compare as photo is the same. Or if you’re able to email me a picture (rcracknell@cardboardconnection.com), I can check it out.

With an ever-growing list of Sparkle SPs, are these still considered SSPs? It seems like there is no rhyme or reason as to who has a sparkle variation this year, I’m inclined to believe that they made Sparkle Variations of every card in S1. Sergio Romo? Really?

Got a jayson heyward variation inside a $10 blaster box !!!

Got a sparkle on card #251 Sergio Romo. On his left hand right below his glove.

Oh well! Thought I had one. At least I pulled the Kershaw SP out of the Jumbo box. Great job with the site. Don’t know what I would do without it!

I don’t know if this has been mentioned yet but I pulled a Sean Doolittle SP. He’s wearing a We Own the West T-shirt

Ryan Cracknell

Jessica » That’s the regular card, not a variation or short print.

Ryan Howard #105 has quite the sparkle on the helmet. Is this a variation?

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Brendan F. » The ones I see are all just glare from the sun. The variation sparkles look pretty fake when you look closely. There might be one, but not from the ones I’ve seen.

Tim Smith

There is a sparkle version of the Puig base. I pulled it. The sparkle is on the side of the shades on the player in the dugout on the left.

I don’t have a pic to send you, but I did see a sparkle variation of Chris Sale floating on ebay.

I got screwed with the jumbo box I bought. Not one single SP variation card. I’ve never not gotten one in a jumbo box.

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Sean » It sounds like the variations are tough this year — about 3 per jumbo case.

I just pulled a Taijuan Walker variation where there’s a “bling” light flash on his necklace. Any idea if there are more of these or what the odds are of hitting one?

Ryan Cracknell

Looks like I’ll be saving some money on ebay with this series in terms of SP cards. I do not understand the point of the sparkle variations. I mean seriously..it’s a little sparkle. To each their own I guess. I’m liking the other SP variations though. Keep the list coming!

How can that Kershaw variation be available already if its #400? As goes for the other series 2 topps?

brian r

I have a c kimbrel #425 SP I opened in my 2nd pack. Not sure what base is but SP has him staring straight at the camera as if he is looking at you and clinching his fist. Also, he is wearing a 2013 postseason jersey.
