2014-15 Panini Excalibur Basketball Kaboom! Inserts Command High Prices

Harkening back to a different time in the hobby, the loud and colorful Kaboom inserts found in 2014-15 Panini Excalibur Basketball are enjoying tremendous interest from collectors. The limited cards are not numbered or signed, nor do they feature a piece of jersey, but the response has been very strong.
Part of a Target-only release, the unique insert set relies on an intense, cartoon image of each player and a large "KABOOM!" headline. A holographic background with a distinct, explosion design completes the card. While specific print runs are not known, Panini revealed that the cards "fall less than one per case." Because of this rarity and the retail-only format, the Kaboom cards are surfacing very slowly despite releasing in the middle of July.
The 2014-15 Panini Excalibur Kaboom inserts include 50 cards and some of the biggest former and current players in the NBA. The design evokes the insert craze of the 1990s and the prices reflect that.
Kaboom inserts feature original artwork from Gyula Nemeth. Inspired by superhero comics, the Hungarian artist has previously worked with Panini and was part of the Kaboom insert line found in 2013-14 Panini Innovation Basketball. These earlier Kaboom! inserts have a similar look and also sell well. An example for Tim Duncan can be seen below. Nemeth also provided artwork for Triple Play Baseball.
