Product Details
2013 Topps Prime Football gives collectors plenty of different combinations. It's almost like a game of Yahtzee where you toss the dice and see what rolls out. Autographs, relic swatches of varying quantities and parallels all combine for plenty of different combinations from a batch of 2013 rookies and potent veterans.
Like last year's set, one of the key components of 2013 Topps Prime Football are the autographed relic cards that combine to fall one per box. All focus on rookie players. Available in five levels, they break down as:
- Prime I (#/10): 6 relic pieces - glove, wristband, football, patch and two jersey swatches
- Prime II (#/15): 5 relics - glove, wristband, football, jersey and sock
- Prime III (#/15): 3 pieces - football, glove and patch
- Prime IV (numbered): jumbo prime patch
- Prime V (numbered): four jersey pieces
On top of this, Prime V cards have five parallels that are exclusive to hobby packs. Copper (#/50) have two football pieces and a pair of jersey swatches. Gold (#/25) include a football, a patch and two jersey relics. Copper Rainbow (#/15) parallels display a piece of winter hat, football and two jerseys. Silver Rainbow (#/10) cards come with a piece of wristband, glove and two jerseys. Gold Rainbow (1/1) have glove, football, patch and wristband swatches.
2013 Topps Prime Football has one basic autographs per hobby box as well, all of which are numbered. Autographed Rookie Variations have the following parallels: Copper (#/99), Gold (#/75), Copper Rainbow (#/50), Silver Rainbow (#/25) and Gold Rainbow (1/1). New this year are Autographed Veteran Variations. Veterans have the same levels of autograph parallels, but they're much rarer. For example, Copper parallels are numbered to 25 instead of 99 like the rookies.
Relics combine to fall two per box. All are numbered. Prime Relics have a rookie jersey piece. Dual Relics and Quad Relics have multiple rookie swatches. Dual Combo Relics and Quad Combo Relics have memorabilia from multiple players, mixing rookies and veterans. All relic cards have numerous parallels, many of which use relics other than plain jerseys.
The 2013 Topps Prime Football base set has 150 cards: 100 veterans and 50 rookies. The minimal design includes full-bleed photography. Veterans have just one parallel, Gold, which is exclusive to hobby packs. Rookies fall one per pack. As with previous years, hobby rookie cards use different images than retail cards. Hobby-only rookie parallels include Copper (#/350), Gold (#/250), Copper Rainbow (#/99), Silver Rainbow (#/50), and Gold Rainbow (1/1).
The product has three basic insert sets as well. Primetimers focuses on stellar photography, showcasing 75 top players. Primed Rookies gives some added attention to 25 first-year standouts. New Prime Performance inserts relive key moments from 25 second-year players.

Product Review
2013 Topps Prime Football Product Review
Reviewed by Chris Wering
Good: Four hits per box. Full-bleed photography. Thick card stock. Nice relics and parallels. Rookie images in hobby boxes differ from those in retail. Reasonably priced.
Bad: Sticker autographs. Questionable checklist. Bland basic inserts.
The Bottom Line: 2013 Topps Prime set is similar to last year's version. Not much change was needed as it is to be a solid product with great photography. Set collectors shouldn't have much trouble putting the base set together. A couple of boxes should be enough to land all of the veterans. With rookies falling one per pack, collectors may have to search the secondary market. Prime autographs include some really nice relic and signature combinations this year.
Card Design: 4.0/5.0
For the most part, the card design is great this year. The cards feature full-bleed photography and the parallels use different color schemes. Many action shots are used and you get an up-close look at the players. Topps Prime uses both horizontal and vertical pictures. I prefer vertical images, but all companies use both.
I would also like to see Topps upgrade their design of the player's names, positions and team logos. Base cards use a silver color pattern and have a tendency to get lost within the background. The gold parallel patterns stand out better.
The bland back of the base cards leave something to be desired. They continue to include player information and statistics, but they lack an additional photo.
Relics and autographs look terrific. Prime Autographs feature jerseys, balls, winter hats, socks, wristbands, and gloves. I don't care for the winter hats or socks, but I was glad to see the wristbands and gloves included as relics.
Topps did a nice job balancing photos and relics. Neither gets in the way of the other. The photos fit well around the relics and the color schemes enhance the photography.
It's too bad the cards use sticker autographs. On-card autographs would have really stood out, especially with the relics.
The basic inserts are a little bland and could be spiced up. Primetimers insert is similar to the base set. They differ in the fact that the backs do not include statistics, but feature information on a prime night by each player. The color schemes in the Prime Performance and Primed Rookies sets are better. Prime Performance features a colorful, computer-generated design behind the players. The backs note a strong performance by the second-year players. Primed Rookies have a similar pattern on half of the front. The font of the insert name is too large and makes everything look cramped. The backs give a description why the player should be ready for prime time. I don't like the idea. They seem overly enthusiastic with praise.
Checklist: 4.0/5.0
With one rookie card in each pack, building a full set is a bit of a challenge. I would like to see at least two rookies, but with so many hits per box, it's tough to complain. As with other products, the base set includes some questionable names. It would be nice to see Topps tighten up their player selection.
The key to this set is the Prime Autographs. There are five different levels for collectors to chase and include some interesting pieces of memorabilia.
Unlike last year, 2013 Topps Prime Football features an Autographed Veterans Variations set. It is a nice addition, but they are very rare and hard to find.
Value: 4.0/5.0
Topps Prime is priced for mid-level collectors. The memorabilia should appeal to many and there are so many parallels to chase. Still, opening a box may be a bit of a risk, since many of the hits are of marginal players. A deeper autograph list with more veteran stars would be nice. The pictures are great, but the checklist isn't as strong as it might have been. Landing four hits in each box given the price is pretty substantial, though.
The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0
This was a fun box to open. It would have been nice to pull a rarer Prime Autograph, but the anticipation was exciting. I went through this box slowly and found myself looking at the cards longer than usual. The photos are that nice.

Supplies
Sometimes the most difficult part of collecting comes when you need to protect your valuable cards. Since card stocks differ by brand and even product, there is no easy way to determine the correct cases for each card you pull until you have it in hand.
To help assist that, we have included the Ultra Pro case sizes required to properly protect the cards pulled from a box of 2013 Topps Prime Football. While it will not cover every card that can be pulled, it should provide collectors with a general idea of which cases are needed.
For more information about the best supplies to house your collectibles, refer to our comprehensive Ultra Pro Supplies section.

I just buy packs at the store & never seem to get anyspecial cards. Do I have to buy a box to get the good cards? It sounds like there is a difference if you buy from a store like Target vs. buying from a card store. With Strata, Prime, Platinum and Chrome, what is the best?
