2013 Panini Golden Age Historic Signatures autographs features one of the most eclectic checklists to ever grace a trading card product. Its mix of baseball, football, horse racing and Hollywood are on par with Topps Allen & Ginter. And while some may argue that Golden Age doesn't have the same level of big names as Allen & Ginter, it's also not the point. Golden Age aims more for the nostalgia, offering plenty of names well known for a small pocket of pop culture. They're also offered one per box. Allen & Ginter offers no such guarantees.
Although 2013 Panini Golden Age is marketed as a baseball set, it's really more of a snapshot of pop culture. The Historic Signatures checklist reflects this. Of the 50 cards in the set, less than a third are of actual baseball players. One could also stretch the baseball theme to include the six Bad News Bears autographs that include Tatum O'Neal and Jackie Earle Haley. There's also Penny Marshall. Perhaps best known as the L-wearing Laverne in Laverne & Shirley, Marshall also directed one of the most beloved baseball movies of all-time, A League of Their Own.
Other highlights in the set include legendary comic creator Stan Lee, boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, racing great Mario Andretti, Henry Winkler (aka The Fonz from Happy Days) and comedian Jerry Lewis. Eve Plumb and Barry Williams are the latest two actors from The Brady Bunch to have their signature in Golden Age. Maureen McCormick, who played Marcia, had her first certified autograph card in 2012 Panini Golden Age.
