User Rating:

2013 Panini Golden Age Baseball is the sequel to last year's eclectic lineup of baseball, pop culture and an updated take on several old-time sets. The formula returns with a varied autograph and memorabilia checklist, lots of mini parallels and more nods to the past. Like last year, the focus is mixed with lots of baseball and plenty from elsewhere.

The 2013 Panini Golden Age Baseball base set has 150 cards. Besides baseball players, there are athletes from other sports, actors, musicians and politicians. Parallels come in the form of six different mini card sets that combine to fall one per pack. Mini cards can be discerned by the design on the back.

Autographs, which fall one per box, come in the form of Historic Signatures. Signers include comics legend Stan Lee, boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, actress Bo Derek, and Yogi Berra. Museum Age memorabilia cards return, also falling one per box.

Going back more than 80 years is a tribute to 1933 Delong Gum. The updated take on the iconic set features new players. Golden Age Playing Cards (1:3 packs) give collectors the chance to build a full deck of 52 different cards and a pair of jokers. The Three Stooges star in their own nine-card insert set, one of which is in every hobby box. Other inserts include Bread for Energy (ten cards, 1:12 packs) and Tip Top Bread Labels (ten cards, 1:24 packs).

2013 Panini Golden Age also includes the first fully licensed Bad News Bears cards. Besides a handful of cards in the bases set, there are autographs and inserts. Signers from the film include Tatum O'Neal and Jackie Earle Haley.

Every box also comes with an Exhibit Box Loader (40 cards) that highlight some of the biggest news stories from the 1940s through to the 1960s.

Product Configuration: 24 packs per box
Price Point: Low- to Mid-End Baseball Card
Target Audience: Old-Time Baseball Fans, Pop Culture Enthusiasts, Autograph Collectors, Set Builders, Vintage Collectors, Mini Card Collectors

2013 Panini Golden Age Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Ryan Cracknell

Good: Eclectic checklist, honors several classic sets, everything looks fantastic, paves path for future sports film cards.

Bad: Those hoping for lots of baseball may be disappointed.

The Bottom Line: 2013 Panini Golden Age Baseball isn't really a baseball set. But it's still a fantastic piece of nostalgia. It's the best of Allen & Ginter getting mashed up with the best of the Donruss Americana line. The result is a checklist that is rich in history and pop culture. And while it may not have a ton of monster hits, the eclectic mix still provides solid value and a strong sense of fun.

Staff Rating:
4.5 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.5/5.0

There's something elegant about every design aspect of 2013 Panini Golden Age. It's classy, it's nostalgic, it's great to look at. Even with all the different inserts and elements, all come together very nicely.

The photo selection is also excellent. Many of the pop culture subjects have been featured in other trading card sets over the past few years. Sometimes this leads to a lot of repetition between sets. While not all the images are new to cards, the majority are fresh. Even between inserts where many of the same personalities appear, the shots are different.

The biggest surprise for me are the Playing Card inserts. Not only do they look and feel just right, but the full-body shots capture a fun and intense side to the subjects.

Checklist: 4.5/5.0

If you're strictly a baseball card collector and you want nothing that doesn't play on the diamond, you're going to be hugely disappointed. But if you're tired of getting the same names and prefer more of a mix, 2013 Panini Golden Age Baseball does not disappoint.

This release has a lot of big names, but few really big names. Think of most of them as solid B or B+ celebrities. I like that a lot of them are relatively fresh faces to modern trading cards.

The inclusion of Bad News Bears cards is a huge deal and not just because it's such a great baseball film. It opens the gates for more sports films to get licensed cards connected to the movie. There is a huge gap in the market for those, one that can make for highly desirable cards even if the names to the mainstream aren't that familiar.

Value: 4.0/5.0

2013 Panini Golden Age doesn't have many cards that will bring you riches. But there are several that will hold very solid values. Piece that together with the many inserts and the relatively low box price and you've got a product where, even in a worst-case scenario, you shouldn't lose a lot and you'll have tons of cards to sort through and enjoy.

The Fun Factor: 5.0/5.0

As long as you don't go into Golden Age expecting a who's who of the diamond, it's near impossible not to have fun with it. The variety, the nostalgia, the beauty, 2013 Panini Golden Age is an extremely thoughtful and well planned out set. Hopefully it's a set that collectors give a chance.

This product is absolutely sh*t. I got a 6-card pack of this in a baseball mystery box from Walgreens for six dollars. These have around 30 random baseball cards and one sealed pack. When I got this, I assumed it would be some sort of Allen & Ginter type version of Panini Contenders. Instead, I got a hockey card, a boxer card, a card of a horse, a mini card of a football coach, a card of an actor, and a card of the three stooges. Out of a baseball pack. I understand that this kind of product would appeal to some. but the fact that they call it a baseball pack is plain false advertisement. I also want to call out whoever the manufacturer of this mystery box is. If someone is buying baseball cards, they don’t want hockey, boxing, and three stooges cards. To any card collecters who want to buy this product, be aware, it is NOT a baseball pack.

Opened up a box last night and was ok with the cards.Got Eve Plumb auto and Carol Lombard patch.I really like the playing cards but still trying to figure out parrallels.(white border)? all mine were. Mini “s are nice as usual got a red Tatum o”neal mini and am guessing its the variation but wondering what there seeded and if its rare? .all in all if price is under 50$ I”m ok with the box but like opening topps 75th a little better.

I gave this product 5 stars because the huge amount of cards weather they are base cards, parallels, inserts, case toppers etc. gives this product a wide variety to collect for everyone. What I mean by this is that the (3) different Our Gang members cards are the only cards I want in my situation, that being said their are a total of 29 different as there are sports cards of all types both old and new, and they are not just baseball. There are Presidents, movie stars and on and on. I still need 8 of the 29 cards that I ‘am chasing, 6 of them are 1 of 1’s and the other two are sp’s. A great product for all!

Wow, the Panini products are getting much better every year. Set looks better than the Topps’ tired Ginter or Gypsy Queen sets.
